Doug Farrar Looks at Tennessee Titans' Offense
Doug Farrar, of Football Outsiders fame, is doing a regular column for Yahoo! Sports on each of the 32 NFL teams. Here is his piece on the Titans. Juicy bits after the jump.
Biggest problem in 2009: Johnson not a cure-all for offense
The 2010 solution: Use the threat of Johnson as much as the player himself
For years, the NFL has been waiting for the perfect hybrid quarterback – one player who could take the spread and option concepts he learned in college and combine them with the necessary keys to professional success – play action, pocket awareness, and an arsenal of repeatable, versatile throws. After a rocky start to his career, it’s starting to look as if Vince Young might be that guy.
Read the whole article. It's short and has a pretty graphic.

I agree with all except the part about CJ
The article is great, and we definitely need to rely less on CJ. But to think that his production is going to fall way off is incorrect to me. it will be only his third year in the league and no defense has been able to solve him. If VY can open up the passing game more, that will only benefit CJ because defenses will be totally off balance. Now the passing game does not intimidate defense enough and they load the box and still CJ gets his yards. Imagine his production when defense are not able to cheat on the run!!!!
If you consider that a 1500-yard campaign would be both nominally excellent and still "way off"...
…then actually I think it makes plenty of sense. Especially if they manage to both rely on him less and spell him with one of the many 3rd Down backs on the roster.

Honestly....I think he will get 1650 yds.....
Nobody has been able to stop him….and we all know the explosion of output when VY came back into the lineup. The fact of the matter is that CJ will probably not run for 2K again….but he will come close….real close…again. VY’s threat to either run and pass and DO IT CORRECTLY AND DECISIVELY will ultimately be the key to our success…on offense. On Defense….they need to get it together….we shall see…
"He is fast, but what I like about him is he looks like one of those track guys that actually knows how to run the ball and has good vision and patience. He is not just running at top speed. He knows when to use his speed, and he has some power and toughness, too.'' Barry Sanders about CJ2K

agreed
I am not saying he will see 2000 yards again…i am saying he will be an even more effective weapon because he will rush for over 1500 yards on fewer touches, which will also help his longevity. ANd you are right VY is the key…and the receivers ability to hold onto the ball (nate washington and justin gage)
Defense…we need help!
i agree….i think the very frist play of week 1 should be a play action to CJ and throw a bomb down the field to Britt……TD!!
And when that starts happening on a regular basis.....
then look for CJ to get even more yds than he did last year…not as many carries as last year….but longer runs resulting in more yds.

BTW
This is the first time since 2006 that I have sensed I could say this without bringing half of MCM down on my head, so without further delay:
GO VINCE!!!!
(I just had to get that out of my system.)

HOLDOUT ON THE HORIZON......
The point I been trying to make to everyone is: IF our FO does NOT give CJ2K any extension; then he WILL hold out, and he will not show up at our facilities until week 4 in preseason. He will not want to run more than 3.0 ypc this year. As why try harder than last year when he won’t make anymore money (556K) until his 3 yrs are up. So no extension, let’s hope Ringer show his potential.
& VINCE YOUNG IS AWESOME!
I supported our true QB when SOME of you fans despised his antics or mental issues. He has talent and proved it last year. Now he is going to take us to playoffs and show the critics they are wrong AGAIN & AGAIN! GO VINCE GO!
If he was playing vs BAL 2 yrs ago instead of KC; WE WOULD HAVE BEAT ARIZONA FOR THE SUPER BOWL!!!

Are you serious?
He will not want to run more than 3.0 ypc this year. As why try harder than last year when he won’t make anymore money (556K) until his 3 yrs are up.
Do you understand what that would do to his future value?
Why exactly
would someone want to perform badly?

I'll bet you believe in the Mayan calandar, too....don't you?

The CalEnder is a man made article just like your display.
The Mayans had their math wrong. There is no end of the world, least for the planet’s sake. The fifth solstice occurs in 2150, not 2012.
I like being wrong. I want CJ2K to get his 10.0 ypc! What I don’t want is having Javon Ringer start games 1-6 for us! Does anyone recall former Cowboy RB Emmitt Smith Holding out until week 6!
Just because someone has an opinion that is different that yours, that gives you no right to judge them as ignorant. Why do people always ASSume. Maybe we all should just keep believing what the media tells us & we will have no common sense by 2100 or too late.

What you stated above was not an opinion...
it was a prediction…which is why I refered to the Mayans (tounge in cheek)…but you are totally free to express yourself here, no doubt about that.
