Around SBN: Despite Relocation Drama, Coyotes Overcome Adversity

OK, maybe this seems extreme to most of us (or maybe not), but I am a little surprised by how many writers and bloggers are saying this should be it for VY with the Titans. I was also struck, but not surprised, by how Fisher is not giving VY any support at all.

BTW - I meant "struck" not "stuck"

there in the last sentence. I guess I’m not in shape for the regular season yet. :-)

What a drama queen AND a moron...
But should they be? And should he stand for that? Fisher is one of the top head coaches in the NFL, and as such you would think he should have the power to decide who leads his football team under center. Clearly, based on last season, the decision is not Fisher’s to make. That being the case, maybe at some point he should make the decision he can make and leave the Titans.

Where did this idea come from that Fisher is a top NFL coach? It feels like one of those things that, once it’s said enough, people continue to repeat it. Well, IMO, this “top NFL coach” cost us a playoff spot last year.

by SuperHorn on Jun 16, 2010 1:05 PM CDT reply actions

While I really don't want to start a long argument here, I think its neccessary to stick up for Fisher a bit

Some of us may disagree with Fisher’s moves, but I do believe he is one of the top coaches in the NFL. Tenure is one of the reasons, but not the only one. The one thing that I like most about Fisher is that he always gets the most out of what he has. The exception was last year, when I thought we could do better than 8-8. But apart from that year, Fisher gets the most out of what he has. Whether that was during the hamstrung years of salary cap torture, or our most recent 13-3 year, his team rarely underacheives.

Also, I think (and this is just my theory) that in the case of some Titan fans, they’re just tired of having him as a head coach. Its somewhat similar to the McNabb situation, where I was surprised many Eagle fans were happy to turn the reins over to Kolb, even though I feel McNabb can still be an excellent quarterback. We overlook what we have until its gone.

Of the current coaches, there aren’t many that can be considered better than Fisher, IMO. Belichick, Reid, Tomlin, and Shanahan, and you could make the argument of Payton, Coughlin, Fox and Lovie Smith perhaps with a few others. But I would take Fisher over most of them (on a personal note, I wouldn’t want Belichick since he was caught videotaping), so that would leave me with maybe Reid, Tomlin and probably Payton. Now obviously some coaches are also up-and-comers, but when Fisher is called a top NFL head coach, I don’t think its an understatement.

Somehow I managed to turn this into a longwinded rant, oops.

If I could think of something witty, I'd put it here.

Winnipeg

I think you may be just the kind of person I’m talking about. It sounds like your regurgitating something that you’ve been conditioned to accept as fact over the years. Here’s the list of active coaches with a better regular season winning percentage:

Jeff Fisher .553

Chan Gailey .563
John Fox .555
Brad Childress .563
Jim Caldwell .875
Bill Belichick .617
John Harbaugh .625
Mike McCarthy .594
Sean Payton – .594
Wade Phillips – .600
Andy Reid – .617
Rex Ryan – .563
Mike Smith – .625
Tony Sporano – .563
Mike Tomlin – .646
Ken Wisenhunt – .563
It’s worth noting that there were also 4 other coaches that were above .500, but just a little below Fish.

That adds up to 15 coaches with a better win percentage than Fisher. And, save me the salary cap dump, etc. When you’ve coached as long as Fisher, the law of averages comes into play. If he hasn’t won a Super Bowl by now, he never will. Time to move on…

I know. I was surprised to see that one.

That’s what’s so shocking. It’s all about how you spin things. On one hand, Gailey has a .563 win percentage and everyone wonders how he got a job again. On the other, Fisher has a .553 win percentage and many think he’s a top 5-10 NFL coach. It’s mind boggling.

by SuperHorn on Jun 17, 2010 8:24 AM CDT up reply actions

Cmon

Names as Caldwell, Tomlin, Sporano, Ryan, Gailey, Wisenhunt, Harbaugh, McCarthy ARE ALL COACHING THEIR FIRST TEAM and should be removed from this list.

One would imagine those %s (especially Caldwell) will only decline into the future.

Gailey is not coaching his first team.

Looking at that list though

I still think Fisher is better than many of those coaches. Obviously I’m using my personal interpretation, but I would take him over Gailey, Fox, Childress, Caldwell, Phillips, and even Wisenhunt. Another thing I forgot to mention about Fisher, is that he has also gone through a major QB change. How many of the above coaches are tied to one single QB? Caldwell, Belichick, Payton, Reid, Smith, and Tomlin I would say. Fisher had McNair, and then has gone through the a change once McNair’s time came to an end. Will Belichick look as smart when Brady leaves? Or how about Caldwell when Manning retires? Fisher had his QB (McNair), went to a Super Bowl, and then once his franchise QB left, managed to put a successful product on the field with a new QB.

If I could think of something witty, I'd put it here.

I read it about 14 times and this guy….wow. BULLETPROOF.

He just blew the lid off this thing. He paints a tapestry of lies, scandal, and murder with his words. With such devastating points as:

- “Mistake number one for a starting quarterback is going to a strip club in the first place”

- “During my time in the NFL I was friendly with a number of starting quarterbacks.” (I might add that EVERY SINGLE one of his articles he brings up “his time in the NFL”. He played 6 years as an undrafted O-guard, on 5 different teams, with only 24 starts… VETERAN)

- and finally in reference to other “professional” quarterbacks, “One of them would never have more than two beers in public and would always leave before midnight.” … cough, cough Ben Roethlisberger, Matt Leinart, Tony Romo, Dan Marino, ohhh and that’s right… Kerry Collins, like that time he got shmammered at a bar and dropped the Megaton N-Bomb on one of his offensive line men…

This thing is huge. We should call it VinceGate.

This writer is dumb also!

Why everybody gotta hate on VY? It was a class C assault equal to a speeding ticket, and he going to ask is he our QB! Hell Yeah he my QB! So I guess know we ask the Viking, Is Adrian Peterson their running back since he just got a speeding ticket going 99 in a 55? Get out of here! I love Peterson NFL players are all human and everybody want to judge then like they aren’t human. Just because they get paid more than some doesn’t mean they are GODS and that they should be perfect!

Is VY Right for the Titans?

Yes. He’s won twice as many games he’s lost, with a lot of different and limited offensive talent around him, despite his own limitations with respect to skills, preparation, knowledge, and maturity.

We have seen progress on all the football fronts and had positive indications re: maturity as well, but this sort of off-field crap needs to never come close to happening again. I don’t care that the guy runs hot, is emotional, wants to have a good time; I don’t think those things preclude massive success in the NFL. I care when those things go too far and get in the way of him doing his best as a QB and maximizing his abilities.

If he really took care of business he could realize those lofty goals he talks about; until then, talk is cheap.

How many fights have you seen in a strip club?

Me? Zero

I think the players are the ones that are making it bad for strip clubs. I’ve never seen an article in a strip club. A bouncer may tell a guy to step back a bit or don’t touch this or that but other than that…nothing.

Titan Nation.....

….Don’t go into another season with this “Vince Young is immature to lead” crap! Class C Citation. First offense on top of that! At least wait until the Commissioner has something to say about, don’t write him off yet. He did come to camp and practiced with the team (unlike some players I know). It seems like some of the Titans fans are looking for an excuse to write Vince Young off despite the game winning drives and keepin’ the Titans out of the top10 when the draft comes around. I thought this teams was based in Nashville not Philly! Yes, I admit, it was an asinine decision to be in a strip club at 3 o’clock in the morning. Yes, it was wrong to hit a guy because he insults your alma mater. It is wrong for the fans to find any excuse to berate, belittle, and straight up write VY off because of these series of events. He manned up to it, cooperated with the Dallas Police, and apologized to the Titans Organization. With all that said…………let it go and let’s get ready for the season. Hell, we gotta Lombardi Trophy to chase!

I don't know about you guys

but I guess I am inmature and a poor leader, and as far as that goes most men are. I don’t like to take crap off people, and if some body provokes me I will fight, but this wasn’t even a fight. This kind of thing happens in alot of pickup basketball games and flag football games. I know it was in a strip club at 3 A.M, but squabbles and pushing matches happen whenever you get a bunch of guys together with egos, and epecially with alcohol.

An idiot?

McNair went through the exact same questions about his maturity after his DUI.

by Stormcrow on Jun 17, 2010 10:48 AM CDT up reply actions

Here is a difference...

and yes I do agree that McNair had to deal with similar questions post-DUI. However, in the minds of many, VY is dealing with off-field maturity issues after some on-field issues with him quitting on his team. I realize that that was 2 seasons ago and some people have moved on, but many people have not. This is VYs first offense legally but not his first offense in the minds of many Titan fans or at least the media.

I’m an early bird and a night owl. So I’m wise and I have worms.

by DonFrancisco on Jun 17, 2010 11:08 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree with you

I was only answering the question about when McNairs maturity was questioned. He was a warrior on the field and would never quit or give up, but hardly perfect off of it. In the end I don’t think the DUI issues affected McNair’s leadership abilities just as the strip club incident with VY won’t affect his leadership abilities within the locker room either.

ROSS TUCKER SUCKS AS A JOURNALIST

VY is our QB and how many times do HAVE to KEEP DEFENDING THIS.

If this is the best article this journalist can come up (which is really a dead issue); then maybe we all should be journalists.

Yes he punched someone. Was he carrying an automatic weapon like Plax? Was he punching a female(s) like Pacman or that Seattle Officer? No & No.
