Defending Brian Cushing

Hello Titans faithful. I've been reading some stuff about one of yall's players cheating and there are some Cushing references in there. So I'm here to defend him with legit evidence.(I did not write this post, just copied it from a BRB post. Save you guys some time on the internet :)). Enjoy.

Ok, so I’m not actually a pharmacist. I am a senior at Oklahoma State University majoring in physiology with emphasis in endocrinology, so hormones are somewhat of a specialty for me. I’m here to talk to you guys about Brian Cushing and to arm you with the knowledge necessary to defend him and your club from the recent slander, and I’m sorry I couldn’t do this sooner. Cushing was caught using a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin or hCG. Many athletes who use steroids incorporate hCG to prevent some nasty side effects like testicular atrophy (shrinkage) during the steroid cycle and muscle atrophy (loss of strength) after a steroid cycle. When used in this capacity it is taken in high doses. From the reports I’ve seen Cushing was found with only low levels of hCG so I don’t believe he used this hormone for this purpose. Also since he was tested frequently after this incident and was found to be "clean" during that time and due to the fact his production continued to increase after this incident (people who were on steroids and come off them tend to lose their extra muscle mass very quickly) leads me to believe he was never on anabolic steroids to begin with.

Another use for hCG is many athletes believe that hCG can help reduce subcutaneous fat. It has been proven time and again that this doesn’t work but many athletes and trainers still believe that it helps. When used in this capacity the hormone is taken in low doses and usually taken orally instead of an injection. Once again, due to the low level of this found in his urine I believe this is what he was taking it for because linebackers can’t usually be fat and still do their job well.

Since hCG is normally produced by pregnant women, it can have side effects on males that increase feminine appearances like breast tissue growth when taken in high doses. Because of this, hCG is usually used with an anti-estrogen agent which wasn’t found in Cushing’s urine analysis either.

I don’t believe this boosted his performance in any way. The evidence seems to point out that the performance seen on the field last year was all Brian Cushing, thus making him deserving of the Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. He’s just a really good player who will continue to get better assuming he doesn’t get hurt.

Texan fans, I hope I’ve armed you with the knowledge to defend Brian Cushing and take anyone down in an argument about him "illegally enhancing his performance". Did he technically cheat; yes he did because he took a banned substance, but the evidence I’ve presented to you indicates that all his talent is natural.

Again, I did not write this post, if any of you don't care for this post, please don't let me know :). As for those of you who do, hopefully you understand what Cushing did a little better.

I am a pharmacist…if he was taking the hCG to get rid of subcutaneous fat then why wouldn’t he just say that? It is more believable than his pitiful excuse of a press conference. What would be most likely to me is that he was cycling off the hCG when he tested positive. That would account for the low levels in the urine. Another possibility is that urine can be diluted if someone is able to “hyper-hydrate”. The specific amount of hCG will not change thus lowering the %hCG in the urine which could lead to lower levels or even a false negative. These are just a couple of other options to explain you low levels.

I do agree that Cushing continued to play well, but that does not mean he never used PEDs or other banned substances.

By looking at your profile picture I think you need some testoterone supplementation. I recommend Androgel.

That is true.

He did say that he doesn’t know how it ended up in his body. Perhaps his lawyer gave him the wrong statement(hopefully).

What’s the difference? PED’s or taking hCG for subcutaneus fat loss, however ineffective, is still illegal. hCG is still on the banned substance list (obviously, that’s the reason he was suspended.) I mean, what if he had used marijuana? Should that have affected the DROY results? What about cocaine? Heroin? The problem is that the task of trying to identify on substance as “worse” than others is a slippery slope. Performance enhancing or not, the guy cheated, and he doesn’t deserve the DROY award.

To use an analogy, it’s like defending a murderer in court and saying, “Everyone needs to understand something. My defendant didn’t commit the heinous crime of choking the victim to death with his bare hands. Nope. He actually poisoned him during dinner. I hope this helps clear his name.”

So Brian Cushing didn't have someone smart enough to tell him

that HcG doesn’t lower subshanananana fat? And he’s a professional athlete. Did he really have that much fat to work off? Still rings like bullshit. This doesn’t PROVE he was innocent, it just is a defense of another possibility to why he used it. It actually doesn’t prove shit, and as Don Fransisco said, then why not just say that?

by T--Rac's Posse on Jun 15, 2010 9:00 AM CDT reply actions

So now we have fans so delusional

That they are providing reasons that Cushing could use so he could try to “prove” he was innocent? It’s funny how Cushing never brought this cheating reason up.

I got one: Cushing was told by doctors that his left leg was going to fall off by the end of September if he didn’t take steroids.

Sounds more logical and would cause less hate for him than the whole fake-cancer story.

The funny thing is that on BRB

The title of the post is “The Pharmacist is in: Defending Brian Cushing,” but then he immediately admits he’s not a pharmacist. So… the pharmacist isn’t really in, right? That doesn’t mean his analysis is invalid (although I find it irritating that he seems to think he presented a slam dunk case so that Texan fans can “take anyone down in an argument”), but why title your post like that?

by TheElusiveShadow on Jun 15, 2010 11:11 AM CDT reply actions

"So Texan fans can "take anyone down in an argument"

By bringing up a reason for Cushing taking steroids that Cushing himself did not bring up?

Haha

this is actually pretty funny.

Alright, I'm a microbiology student and so steroids is not a strength of mine.

But the fact that Texan fans continue to defend this moron is crazy. Brian Cushing got caught with a substance that is BANNED by the NFL. That is why he is a cheater. That’s what it boils down to for me. The same goes for Gerald McRath. Texan fans shouldn’t let the jersey they wear affect how they view a player. I wonder how they feel about McRath right now actually, or especially if he had produced a monstrous season last year.

If I could think of something witty, I'd put it here.

Its funny

That every college kid somehow thinks they are an expert because they are majoring in it at the time. Hell i’m majoring in engineering but i don’t call up NASA and offer my shuttle ideas.

Also, if this was the case, the Cushing camp would have said it. Not this “I was afraid i have a tumor” despicable nonsense.

Ya interesting that this endocrinology student has come up with an explanation

Yet the whole Texan organization could not come up with a viable excuse. The tumor excuse was horrendous and made me think even less of Cushing.

If I could think of something witty, I'd put it here.

BoneCrusher, what's up dude?

This is so weird to see you over here. As you can see, these boys like to have more fun….not as “cut & dried” as TCB is….but don’t tell them that, though….don’t want to hurt anybody’s feelings…..:-)

Jesus,

Most of these responses were a little harsh, but this is a rival blog, so I get what I deserve.

I'd like to point out another thing:

Cushing was tested multiple times before the season and during the beginning of it. The first time he was tested, it was negative, the second time, it was positive. Both tests weren’t separated by a long period of time either. It is a little odd that he only took a small amount, because if you knowingly took steroids, wouldn’t you want to cover it up 100% by taking a shit load of hCG?

And for the record,

the guy who wrote this is not a Texans fan. He is a Colts fan. A Colts fan that likes Cushing. Go figure.
