"I have no idea (what the substance was),’’ McRath said. "I didn’t test positive for a steroid … None of the products I took was on (the NFL’s) banned list.’’

McRath said he got news of the violation in February, but that the incident actually occurred early last season.

He said he’s now in the process of testing everything he was taking at the time to determine what caused the violation. He’s paying for those tests and said they will probably cost about $6,000.

"The hardest part is you can read the labels and look at everything … but the batch I had could have been tainted,’’ McRath said. "But you don’t know that because I don’t have the batches anymore. That’s the even harder part now. That’s another reason I withdrew the appeals.

One good thing comes from McRath's suspension.

the batch I had

the batch of what???

The batch was tainted. I’ve never had a tainted snickers bar but these dudes have tainted batches. Unreal….

Rumor has it that some supplement companies will sometimes "spice up" their first batch of a new supplement.

That industry is incredibly unregulated. Basically, a new, hot supplement comes out and has all sorts of ridiculous claims. People start taking it, and get incredible results. Well, the reality is that the first batch was spiked with Dianabol or some other oral steroid. By the time the FDA comes in to check things out, the next batch is out without the steroid in it.

Now, I don’t think this is common practice. But, that’s what he was likely talking about.

by SuperHorn on Jun 15, 2010 9:08 AM CDT up reply actions

This is the first time...

I’ve heard of someone testing the suppliments like they are preparing for a law suit, a four game suspension is a lot of money to miss out on, and these guys that blame the drug companies never follow through on it. Maybe its all talk but atleast its a little different spin

I'm no super-genius... or are I?

This is extremely disappointing.

McRath is now a cheater. If he gets proven innocent, then alright I’ll have to change my stance. But for now, I’ve got to be as tough on him as I was on Cushing.

If I could think of something witty, I'd put it here.

Stop trippin'

OK at least he manned up to the situation and didn’t make it a media circus like Cushing did! Did you hear the interview? He’s willing to take the four game suspension unlike some players who rather try to appeal to state courts when their suspensions could be already served. Thank God that the NFL isn’t like Major League Baseball and wait about a decade until they do something about it.

I suppose then, by your reckoning...

That my mother, who tested positive for opiates after eating a poppy seed muffin is a druggie?

Did he test positive for something? Yes.

Is he taking the prescribed punishment for the positive test? Yes.

Is that proof that he knowingly broke the rules? No.

Lay off calling him a cheater until he either tests positive a second time or something conclusive comes out showing that he purposefully took something on the banned list.

by Antoniemey on Jun 14, 2010 10:14 PM CDT up reply actions

???

I think there is a difference between knowingly cheating and unknowingly cheating, but personally I still think it is cheating either way. He did not fail the test b/c of poppy seed muffins. Best case scenario(and I think unlikely) he had a “tainted batch” of supplements. In my mind, as an athlete who has heard numerous athletes use this same excuse, why would you assume your supplements are safe? Just b/c you got from GNC from a sales(wo)man(not a medical professional) or from your trainer whose training is not in supplements does not mean a supplement is good. Why not ask your team docs for a recommendation? Better yet, get the Titans to hire a pharmacist to analyze your supplements and recommend certain supplements. I happen to know a good pharmacist for the job.

I agree.

I have to say that I don’t believe that defense for one second. But if it is true, that’s even more frustrating because the Titans organization I’m sure goes to pains to prevent exactly this kind of thing from happening.

Thats a ridiculous statement.

First off, we’re not talking about your mother. Its highly unlikely PEDs somehow made its way into his food.

Secondly, why would I wait for a second positive test to call him a cheater? If we did it that way, everyone could get caught once, then stop using, and then by your reckoning would not be a cheater. Should we say Brian Cushing’s clean until he fails a second drug test? I don’t think so. I think he’s a cheater. and I think McRath is as well.

If I could think of something witty, I'd put it here.

I never said they made their way into his food.

But you obviously missed the point… There are numerous ways for a false positive on a drug test.

IF, and even you must admit the possibility, he really did get a tainted batch of something you’ll have jumped to a wrong conclusion. That might not bother you, but it sure bothers me when either I do it or someone does it to me.

Certainly, all athletes need to be smart and avoid the illegal stuff and be very careful about what supplements they take. Unfortunately, teaching some of them that will be like keeping Pacman out of the strip joints.

by Antoniemey on Jun 15, 2010 3:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Why drop the appeal then?

If I was convinced I “got a bad batch” and I was paying to have my stuff tested, then why drop the appeal? If I had any proof or hope of proof then I would not drop my appeal…which McGrath had already done.

Conversely...

If you know you didn’t intentionally break the rules but have no legal way to prove it, which works out better for you in the long run? Fighting for months and still losing, or taking your lumps and avoiding the whole situation in the future?

I’m not saying he’s definitely telling the truth… I’m just saying that there is evidence that he could be and one mistake does not make someone a cheater.

Is Bill Belichick a cheater?

He only made one mistake.

But he said he is trying to disprove it by having his stuff tested

Why try if you are not going to fight? It does not cost anyone anything to keep an appeal with the NFL. There is no reason for him to have already w/drawn it.

I can't answer that...

because I can’t read minds…

But if the test results won’t come back in time for him to use them in his defense to the NFL, that could be a reason.

by Antoniemey on Jun 16, 2010 8:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Argh.

If he starts by testing his injection needle first, he’ll probably find the problem right off.

What I find hilarious

Is that they all say with great authority that they did not test positive for steroids. Duh. I have my doubts that anyone actually uses anabolic steroids anymore. There is so much more stuff out there now that flies under the radar. Why take a needle and shoot it in yourself?
