Guess I wasn't all wrong about CJ...

Back in December I stated, that I'd probably be a good idea to redo Chris Johnson's contract considering how much he's achieved and how little he's paid...

Star-divide

I further stated that he might open his mouth about wanting a new contract if nothing happened, yet some people disagreed completely. Here's the link:

CJ outplaying his contract?

Yet here we are... CJ holding out with the entire NFL nation wondering, what's going to happen next. There is simply no excuse not to pay him. The 30 percent rule can be worked around like Eagles did with Kolb and 49ers with Willis, so don't give me that excuse. The notion, that he might become lazy if he's paid, is ludicrous. Show me one single time, CJ has been lazy as a player. He's always in shape and working out, even when he's not with the team.

Just pay the man!!!

Michael Lombardi make some good points...

on why it’s not a good idea for CJ to hold-out and why the Titans probably would not restructure his contract.

And Marshall

makes some good points why Chris SHOULD holdout ;)

Always two sides to every story.

I just don't get...

Seriously, you pay a mediocre tight end 4.9 million, yet you won’t dish out anything for the arguably the best player in the league???

Someone please explain that logic to me…

by dsp82 on May 8, 2010 6:54 PM CDT reply actions

It's the NFL

if contracts were based on sound logic, mediocre tight-ends wouldn’t make $5 million. Instead, your value is only determined in a FA year, not before or after it.

Also, CJ’s contract was logical when it was signed because it was slotted…

nobody likes a i told you so.

so what you told us something we already knew was gonna happen. everyone knew CJ would prob hold out. and technically not holding out just yet. when mandatory stuff starts coming, he will probably come in, he don’t make enough to take the fines to not show up for mandatory stuff.

by tnfan1987 on May 8, 2010 10:01 PM CDT reply actions

It's not about that...

I’m just annoyed, that some think the titans are doing the right thing about not paying him.

I mean, compare him to Kevin Kolb.
Kolb’s been a starter in 2 games in 3 years, basically proving nothing, yet the Eagles still gave him a 12.5 million guaranteed extension.
CJ’s has amassed close to 4000 yards since coming into this league, 23 TD’s and arguably the best player in the league, yet the Titans don’t think he deserves a new contract.

Does no one see the problem in this?

by dsp82 on May 9, 2010 7:13 AM CDT up reply actions

I do

CJ is a franchise running back, in an age when most teams have to utilize two or more backs. He needs to be paid as such, especially with Bo Scaife getting paid so gratuitously.

by vancouverTITAN on May 9, 2010 12:16 PM CDT up reply actions

yea i agree with you man.

just saying that your talking about how you told us this would happen and it is. no one that i can remember disagreed that he was outplaying his contract and deserves a pay raise. the titans are a cheap organization. who do you know that we have RESIGNED to a long term, high contract. we have never been a team that is known for resigning players. we draft them and cut them loose once their rookie contracts are up. or we sign mediocre free agents to elite veteran contracts than never earn what we pay them.

My Bronco fan friends are gonna be really annoying this year.

by RareColoradoTitanFan on May 11, 2010 5:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Its not prudent to give him a new contract until we see how he holds up this season.

Historically, running backs have a down year after a year with so many carries. If he can hold up and produce another great season, then we can pay him. If he can’t hold up, then the contract will be less pricey for him. Its business. Imagine if the falcons had given a huge extension to Turner after his big 2008. We would have heard what a mistake it was in 2009. Just wait, and stop lobbying for it when it isn’t forthcoming.

Also, if CJ holds out then i will lose respect for him. Be a man and deal with what you signed, fire your agent before you sign your next contract.

Agreed, CJ had no problem signing the contract two years ago. Live with it.

Yes I understand he is one of the top 5 players in the league currently, but he should have had a highly skilled agent handling the negotiations when he was a rookie. It is unfortunate for him that he did not. The good news is he can make plenty of money on the side with Nike or Gatorade or a host of other corporations who would be willing to pay him big to have him represent them. So suck it up CJ, play great a couple more years and you can name your price. Holding out would not be in his best interest, and he hasn’t done that yet., and hopefully he won’t.

by Joy kat on May 10, 2010 9:43 AM CDT up reply actions

Live with it?

What don’t you people get?
It’s a slot system! You don’t get paid by performance, having a better agent or being a great negotiator. You get a little less than the pick before you and a little more than the pick after you, in most cases, that’s it!
Chris had as big of a chance of getting a 40 million contract back then as I do of banging Scarlett Johansson.

Case in point, Michael Crabtree. Dude knew he was better than the offer he was given and even hold out like forever, yet what happened? He agreed to the contract originally offered. Why? Because he had no leverage. He was picked 10th basically stating, he wouldn’t get more than the 9th overall pick.

So make any argument about him not having proved enough if you will, but don’t give me the argument about agreeing to a bad contract and honoring it.

Scarlett told me she digs you, dude!!

by titansfan4ever on May 10, 2010 10:59 AM CDT up reply actions

A good agent would have written in a performance clause getting him more money

provided he played at a superior level, in which he did. No clause, no cash. It really could not be much simpler. He will be compensated in a couple of years if he continues to play the way he has. He likely will get all kinds of endorsement deals now. I am not worried about his financial well being.

Not until training camp

He will miss some of camp, but he will be on the field when the games matter.

"What if I was Peyton Manning?"- CJ to the ref after they picked up a personal foul flag for a late hit on him.

Two sides of this story

One side says…he signed a contract, he needs to honor it. And as tight as Uncle Bud is…well you know he doesn’t appreciate ANYBODY holding him hostage. A side note to this is…one should NEVER make the mistake of over-estimating one’s worth/value to the company/team that they work for…BIG MISTAKE…(I’ve actually learned this lesson personally)..:-(….The other side says….as a fan, I don’t care if Bud spends every last dollar he’s got to pay CJ…I want to see him sprinting down the field with the ball!! Any RB who totes the rock for over 2000 deserves a big fat raise. A side note to this is….wouldn’t you think that CJ’s contract would be loaded with incentives, of which I’m sure he would have had to reach every one of them last year…so wouldn’t he have automatically gotten a big raise with all the incentive money??

by titansfan4ever on May 10, 2010 9:38 AM CDT reply actions

If CJ had a 2000yd incentive...

guess who wouldn’t have gotten 2000 yds… Mr. Adams would have made a call during that seattle game and it would have sounded something like this…" Coach, put Lendale in. we want people to try and trade for him this offseason so we should show them what he’s got in his last game as a Titan". This would be immediately proceeded by him flipping the ole birds out.

by slo-verado on May 10, 2010 7:46 PM CDT reply actions

FAIL

Why does everyone assume Bud is cheap? Our payroll is consistently in the top half of the league, and in the past he’s shown no hesitation to open the wallet for guys who are good investments.

Pay CJ!!!

If I were CJ I’d be holding out too. He’s now officially the best RB in the league, and could be arguably the best offensive player in the league! He deserves a new contract. The Titans must pay up so we can have him in Nashville for the next several years!
