Tennessee Titans Morning Links: Donovan McNabb Goes From Wings To Feathers Edition
The headline story continues to speculate on Kevin Mawae's return, but buried lower down is news that CJ2K has a Nike commercial in the can, is shooting a fantasy football one at the moment and will be featured on ESPN's E:60.
The Titans Caravan is an annual tour of the smaller cities in and around Tennessee, and offer a great chance for everyone and anyone to meet and greet many of your favorite Titans players. This year's tour will start April 12th; Titansonline.com has the full schedule.
The big NFL headline this week is the Eagles' trade of Donovan McNabb to division rivals the Redskins for a second rounder and future picks, but the interesting subplot is that the 'Skins offered up former Titan Albert Haynesworth. We've been following Big Albert's unhappiness in Washington (anyone else surprised that match seems to be headed south?), and news that the team tried to move him probably won't set well with the big man.
Peter King has plenty of thoughts on this McNabb trade and how it impacts the NFC East, the draft, the NFL as a whole, the Middle East peace process, the price of Colombian coffee and the winners of Minute to Win It. However, the real news is that somehow PK manages to write the whole thing without mentioning Favre or Romo.
Plenty of Titans notes in Paul K's weekly mailbag post.
Critics of the NFL's new overtime policy have an ally in agent Robert Boland. I'm not as harshly against the new rules, but what I really dislike is changing the rules of how a game ends for just the playoffs. If it's good enough for then it should be the law in the regular season, and network time constraints shouldn't be the differentiator.

Well,
McNabb going to the Skins should help all of us in the AFC South. I’m thinking everyone will beat both the Eagles and the Skins, with the exception of maybe the Jags.

Only if our pass defense suddenly realizes its a pass defense.
Jackson of the Eagles could destroy us if we don’t get any better.

The Jags couldn't beat the rams.

So
Haynesworth would possibly be traded for a 2nd round pick and maybe another 6th or so?
What if we tried to send Washington one of our 3rd rounders… or maybe a 4th instead… and send LenDale to Washington?
Could we rework his contract? or would we have to pay him what the dumbass Skins shot themselves in the foot with?
the contract remains
until he is cut or he decides to restructure. in a simple trade, the contract remains, which i’m sure is why Philly didn’t want him and took the draft picks instead.

skins need a RB?
after signing larry johnson and wille parker i doubt the skins will take lendale off our hands. we’ll have to find someone else to do that. he could get traded in the middle of the draft (to a team that missed out on a RB), and if he doesnt he’llback up CJ2K again.

I was thinking trading Haynesworth away would incur a huge cap penalty
But it’s, after all, an uncapped year. But who wants that contract?

If I remember correctly
it’s really only a 4 year deal because everything past that isn’t guaranteed, and the bonus acceleration would hit this year when there’s no cap.
Still, I don’t think there’s any way that happens, and Albert’s salary is probably why Philly declined.

even without the hard cap to worry about
that’s some serious paper.
the other angle i could think of, is scheme issues. the eagles know albert told the skins he didn’t want to play NT, and maybe philly doesn’t like the idea of him @ DE in the 3-4.

Actually...
…it seemed like almost all of the guaranteed money was in the initial 18 months… or something crazy like that. The way it was structured almost ensured that this would happen. Bottom line, Albert needed to go there, get paid, play like crap, and then hope to get cut and re-sign with a better team, earning yet another signing bonus. As I remember it, that was literally his best option. And the man is not stupid. He knew what he was getting himself into.
But that’s why it was never a matter of a few million dollars, the way some folks have reported it. Because it was the TIMING of all that guaranteed money that was so crazy.

From the Washington Post (at the time):
bq.The package includes $41 million in guarantees — the highest total in league history — and Haynesworth is ensured of receiving about $32 million in the first 13 months of the contract, which was finalized shortly after agent Chad Speck phoned Haynesworth at around 3:45 a.m.
Well, 13 months have come and gone. Like I said, this contract was a lit fuse when it was signed.

If Kerry Collins does not want to comeback as a backup...
maybe MR can take a look at Jason Campbell to backup Vince Young.
This would be a great signing if the Titans can pull it off.

It would be.
However, with so many quarterback issues around the league, I’d imagine he can compete for a starting job somewhere…
Definitely agree
Though apparently Washington’s gonna look to trade him rather than outright release him, so for a 4th or 5th round pick, would it be worth it for us? And thats assuming our pick outbids a team that desperately needs a QB. I’m all for getting him as a backup through free agency though, even with Collins back. He has some potential left.

Because
If Kerry Collins is gone and VY gets hurt would you want a rookie to come in and take over? especially because its not like VY never gets hurt.. but i wudnt want to trade for campbell

Bring Back AH
Not the one cutting the checks, but there’s no doubt this team is better with that dude at DT.
If he’s the equivalent of a #2 and 2011 #4, then that’s good value for the Titans. Putting “personal” issues aside, there would only be 3 suitors for AH in the AFC given the proliferation of 3-4 teams; Texans, Titans, and Bengals.
IMO, I think thats a compliment.
