2010 NFL Draft The Tennessee Titans Select Southern California WR Damian Williams

Williams is a highly productive USC alum (1,010 receiving yards last year with rotating freshmen QBs) who looks like a steal at this point in the draft.  ESPN's Scouts Inc. had him listed as the 5th best WR in the draft, and gave him a second round grade. He's a high character guy who coaches have praised as a great worker..

Best of all, he's a crack punt returner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here are some highlights from ESPN's scouting profile:

• Thinly built frame but possesses adequate height and solid top-end speed for the position.

• Brings added value as a special team punt returner. Coaches rave about his character and work ethic. A true team player.

• Polished. Smooth working out of stem and easily transitions into breaks running intermediate in and out routes. Tempos routes and does a good job of using head and shoulder fakes.

• Appears quicker than fast on film

• Lacks extra gear to out run defenses when gets a seam

• Fights for extra yardage and shows good awareness for first down marker

• Gives consistent effort as a run blocker and works to stay engaged but can be overpowered by stronger and more physical defenders.

So he's not Albert Haynesworth, but this guy could be a VERY good weapon for Vince and gives us a polished punt return option.  I like it a lot. With all of the CBs that went before our pick, there was no good value there, so that makes this pick even better.

And if you're still doubting, just watch this video Smash found.

funny

They could have easily done the same and for Morgan. I like him. An upgrade to receiver corps for sure and maybe a good 1-2 punch with Britt down the line

It's not a terrible pick...

But I just feel we had greater needs. Welcome to Nashville, let’s make it happen.

tbh

the only real needs are a return guy and a corner. this guy is our returner, and we have another 3rd rounder. Hopefully we pick up a decent db.

Seems like a talented and well spoken young man

I was kinda hoping for a CB prospect + returner in one, but if the Hawk isn’t ever going to really fly, or Nate aging past productivity, WR + returner fine with me.

by numbertenox on Apr 23, 2010 8:34 PM CDT reply actions

Maybe this guy

Can step in immediately and make an impact at WR. Then Hawk can focus on KR/PR and blow up.

Problem solved- that was easy!

From what I've seen at SI and NFL.com so far

This guy is a good pick. SI had a 3.03 grade on him, Shipley’s was only 2.51.

Uses his blockers well, good vision.

Seems to have good hands and instincts as a returner.

this is a GREAT pick

he’s not exactly a steal at this point in the draft, it was more or less expected, but he’s an explosive returner, no doubt about that, but he can also give us some impact in the passing game if we need him

gotta be excited about that. not only did he fill a hole, i think he should be pretty productive too. third round is a GEM in the past few drafts for the entire league.

To be a complementary receiver for Britt, he'd have to get on the field.

I really hope Fisher gives this guy some playing time. Every time we pick a WR I get excited about the pick and then they never see the field for two years. Looking at you Lavelle Hawkins.

ESPN:

What he brings: Williams is one of the most polished and savvy route-runners in this year’s draft class. Williams is a smooth athlete who does a good job transitioning out of breaks and shows above-average body control and ball skills. We graded him out as a second-round pick, but his lack of burst to create separation is likely the reason he dropped to the third round.
How he fits: Kenny Britt is an emerging receiver for the club, but Nate Washington and Justin Gage are more complementary receivers than playmakers. With that said, Williams will be another weapon for Vince Young and offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger.

Walter Football:

2010 NFL Draft Grades:

16. Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech
Amazing. The Titans get the top-rated defensive end at No. 16. We can see why the Titans are always in position to make the playoffs. (Pick Grade: A)

77. Damian Williams, WR, USC
There is absolutely no reason Damian Williams should have went this late. He’s a great route-runner and projects as a pefect complement for Kenny Britt. (Pick Grade: A)

Its about time Fish I was waiting all day

I love this pick. Damian has been a solid receiver that last few years but never had a crazy break out season that I expected. This may have been attributed to the fact that the Trojans have been constantly changing QBs from John David Booty to Mark Sanchez to Matt Barkley. He is a pros pro and will flourish in the NFL.

Some liken him to a poor mans Marvin Harrison (Minus the whole murderer thing). He has football smarts and will be able to learn our book and routes easily which should help him reach the field quicker. As long as he shows up in practices and training camp I think he may jump Gage or Washington. I’m also assuming that Britt will be our number one receiver to begin the season.

I think we can all be excited about this pick and not just because he’s from USC…Fight On as we say!

Some Trivial Background

Williams was part of the heavily recruited and highly ranked Arkansas Razorback freshman class of 2006. He came from Springdale, AR to the Razorbacks along with QB Mitch Mustain and Head Coach Gus Malzahn.

The story goes that Malzahn was forced on Houston Nutt by then AD Frank Broyles in order for Williams, Mustain, and a TE named Cleveland to commit to the Hogs. Nutt and Malzahn never clicked. Malzahn left after one season and went to Tulsa. He is now the OC at Auburn. Nutt lasted another season or two, but was dogged by the press and harassed by boosters. Some went as far as to obtain his cell phone records via the Freedom of Information Act (cell phone paid for by Arkansas taxpayer dollars).

Williams and Mustain both transferred to USC. Mustain hasn’t touched the field and Williams has had two good seasons and is now a Titan.

Yes, this has nothing to do with how well of an NFL player Williams will be, just a little info on some Razorback drama…

GREAT work by the Titans to find this kind of value in the 3rd round – I love the Curran pick too – I give the boys an A+ in the front office and hope we close with some corner depth and maybe another weapon or two – GREAT job so far
