Tennessee Titans Morning Links: My Eyelids Are Shocked, Indeed Edition
We all know the Titans have a fetish for drafting small school prospects who they can coach up, so Jimmy points us towards a Shutdown Corner post about the top 10 small-school prospects in Thursday's draft. One guy to watch for on this list is Murray State's Austen Lane, who is like a small school JPP. He could definitely be a target should someone like Haden slip to our spot in round one. Speaking of which....
ESPN.com had a mock draft where the picks were made by the site's divisional bloggers (Paul K representing the AFC South), and the shocker here was that we passed on Joe Haden to draft Michigan's Brandon Graham. If that is how it actually plays out I'll be fuming. I know we need a DE, but Haden has every indication of being the real deal at CB, and we haven't signed anyone to even compete for a spot across from Cortland who hasn't washed out in multiple franchises already.
Even Jim Wyatt knows that the Titans would be hard pressed to pass on Haden if he makes it to pick 16. I disagree that he's probably the only non-defensive lineman that would make them hesitate (Rolando, Earl Thomas, Sergio Kindle and Dez Bryant could possibly fall and would warrant major consideration, especially if the reason they fall is an early run on the DE position), but he's probably the one they'd want the most.
Follow us through the jump for more on Albert, remembering McNair and miracles....
Mike Shanahan says that the Redskins have not talked about trading Albert Haynesworth to anyone at any time. Well that must close the book on that because NFL coaches are always straight-up when it comes to embarrassing details. I mean I'm waiting for the day that an NFL coach acts like he doesn't even know what a trade is as is confused and frightened by the explanation.
The late, great Steve McNair was honored at the 4th annual Celebrity Basketball game for the Diane Greer Walker Foundation. McNair had regularly served as a coach for the event, and in his absence his sons and several Titans stepped in to help. The players on the court all wore no. 9 jerseys as an homage to our boy.
I think we found Superhorn's real identity:But Hall knows two players he’d like to see add: receiver Jordan Shipley and defensive end/linebacker Sergio Kindle. It’s understandable. Both played at Texas. So did Hall and fellow Titans Vince Young, Bo Scaife and Michael Griffin."If we can steal Jordan Shipley in the second or third round, that would be great for me,’’ Hall said.
Yes, I'm still pissed that a few years back our coaching staff put Mookie Johnson on the practice squad so that hacks like Chris Henry and Donnie Nickey could stay on the active roster. I mean, who would you rather have today?

They somehow forgot the Titans team existed though. They show a couple LBs and CBs and neglect to mention that the Titans should be interested

Could someone explain to me the ICP/Miracles meme?
This has come up a bunch in the SF Giants game threads, and I have no idea what they’re talking about.

Well, if Jimmy is really Eddie Berlin (which he is)
Then SuperHorn being Ahmard Hall is entirely plausible.

I realize that we've talked about this, but...
Why in the Hell is the Draft on freakin’ Thursday this week? I mean, watching the Draft—or listening to it on the radio, which is what I usually do—is a fine thing to do on a Saturday between workouts or chores or whatever. Kick back with a beer and the draft… no problem.
But Thursday? Man, even I have better things to do on a damn Thursday than sit around watching Mel frekin’ Kiper, and I’ve got two kids and no life!
Ugh.

Why Rolando McClain?
I admit it, I’m easily confused. Would a Rolando McClain supporter please explain to me why the Titans should draft him? Points I’d like to see addressed in this defense include (1) what you plan to do with Stephen Tulloch, (2) why I should not be greatly concerned about McClain’s lack of speed and possible deficiencies in pass coverage, especially in a nickel set, (3) why the Titans would move away from an OLB-led defense to more emphasis on the MLB, when that hasn’t been the case since Godfrey left, and (4) whether or not you are concerned McClain is benefiting from a “Saban bounce.”
Don’t get me wrong, he was an excellent player at Alabama and should be a very good NFL player. I just think he’d be a massive misfit in the Titans’ scheme and instead needs to go to a team that likes bigger linebackers and is less coverage oriented in what they want from their linebackers. If the Giants are sticking with Spagnuolo’s scheme, he’d be a fit, and he also could be an ILB for any* 3-4 team.
I will let someone who isn't completely biased
take a shot at that, but not before I say that all of your concerns are the same reason this team passed on Demeco Ryans, ever heard of him? I know he might not be a “fit,” but you don’t pass on a football player like that. He will find a way to be productive in any system. And Rolando>Tulloch, and I love Tully.

Ryans was never an option
Ryans went with the 1st pick in the 2nd round. The only player the Titans picked before him was VY, and nobody would have taken Ryans 3rd overall.
I wasn’t trying to suggest that Tully was McClain’s equal, merely that the Titans already had a competent MLB in place, and basic competency is all they seem to want out of an MLB. Do you think McClain’s a 3-down player in the Titans defense? I really don’t see it, but I’m trying to be open to being convinced otherwise.
My bad on DeMeco
I thought he was the Griffin year. Strike that.

"What if I was Peyton Manning?"- CJ to the ref after they picked up a personal foul flag for a late hit on him.
Easy
1) Tully was originally a OLB put at the MLB spot because obviously he wasn’t going to get any playing time with Bulluck and Thorton starting. He also had to beat out Ryan Fowler for the spot.
2) McClain is a defensive leader on and off the field. He is the field general for the defense and knows what every player is suppose to do. He also spends a lot of time in the films room. What McClain may lack in speed he makes up for in his vision and knowing where the play is going.
I think the only reason we are OLB-led defense is because we’ve had really talented OLB if we had a talented MLB then we would be MLB-led.
I think McClain will be a candiate for DROY but Suh will probably win barring any injury.
Taylor Mays > Eric Berry
They’’ve been an OLB-led defense because they’ve chosen to invest resources in OLBs in preference to MLB. Look at what they’ve given up for MLB since Godfrey left-low veteran contracts, UDFA Brad Kassel, Peter Sirmon after he showed he can’t play OLB, free RFA Fowler, and 4th round pick Tulloch. They ignore the position because they don’t like it. OTOH, for OLB, they have Bulluck (1st round pick, big contract), Peter Sirmon (big RFA offer matched), and Thornton (big FA contract).
I also strongly discount the film study explanation-it’s a quantum leap from college, where film study isn’t hugely pervasive and often not particularly intelligent, to the NFL, where most guys are busting themselves and doing it smartly.
McClain will probably be DRoY because he’ll go to a scheme that’s M/ILB focused and lets him make a lot of tackles, the same way DeMeco won it, and maybe 5 years later we’ll look at the DRoY voting we look at Kendrell Bell winning over Richard Seymour in 2001.
Film Study
at the collegiate level may no be as complicated as in the NFL but I believe it shows your commitment to the game and helps in the long run in their NFL careers. I believe I stated in our Mock Draft with the Broncos that in Bamas practices when McClain was told to take a breather he would stand by the coaches and observe some of the younger players instead of going over to the bench and resting with everyone else.
I don’t know about you but that is the kind of football player I want on my team.

I agree with what everyone is sayin bout McClain
Hes a great player/leader, with a high motor and he studies the game, on film and during practice. With all that said though, the one thing that bothers me and that no one else has mentioned is that he has Crohns disease, and I know that Crohns disease is rarely fatal, but that still would worry me in drafting him, if he fell to us. Anyone else have any thoughts on that or know anything about Crohns disease to maybe give some insight?
Titan 4 Life
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/When_is_Crohn's_disease_fatal
I found a link from wikipedia about it. Not that I don’t like the guy or think hes a hell of a football player, but I don’t think I would draft him base on this.
Titan 4 Life
Im by no means a doctor, but
Ive had crohns disease since i was 10 (im 20 now), and aside from when i was initially diagnosed (the first year was pretty hellish) ive only had 1 time in the last 10 years where i was physically unable to live a normal lifestyle. basically what happened was the same area was continually getting flare ups, and scare tissue built and they had to surgically remove 10cm (about 4 inches) of my intestine. that details irrelevant to mcclain, but the point im trying to make is that the severity of the disease varies by person. its not something like MS where it starts off slowly but gradually deteriorates. if kept under control it will literally not affect you at all whatsoever. having said that, flare ups can come at any time, and unexpectedly, but rarely do. although primarily controlled through medication, diet, exercise, and keeping in good health all do in fact help keep the disease under control. there have been several pro athletes with the disease who have had long and productive careers. david garrard comes to mind in terms of nfl players, and as im sure some of you know (gramsey ill leave it to you to single out certain individuals) several NHL players (past & present) have it as well, namely fernando pisani, theo fleury, kevin dineen, and i believe saku koivu (sorry guys, im canadian, hockeys in my blood). its also been speculated that this is what has been keeping brock lesnar out of the ring, but thats just one theory of many. anyways, sorry for the long winded reply, just figured id put my 2 cents in on the matter seeing as i do have a fair bit of knowledge on the subject. long story short: yes, it can be a serious and hard disease to deal with, that is the exception and not the rule. most people who suffer from crohns lead perfectly normal lives, and that addage goes tenfold for athletes who keep their bodies in peak physical condition.
but for the record i still say we go haden.
