Update on the Kevin Mawae situation: is he being blackballed?
Mawae may have to wait until after draft before signing a deal, but it's pretty clear that Kev thinks there's more than meets the eye when it comes to why nobody seems very interested in his services:
Mawae is also the current President of the NFL Players Association. Because of the potential for a lockout next March, some teams may try to avoid signing one of the most active players involved in the labor issues. For Mawae, an 8-time Pro Bowler and a 16-year NFL veteran, it's a situation that has been tough to accept because of his body of work on the field.
''Part of me wants to say no, that that's not the case, that management can look past the business side of football and try and build a good football team,'' Mawae said. ''But history shows that they've done this to players in the past. John Mackey back in the day was the President of the Players Association. He was an All-Pro and didn't even get a job until midway through the next season.''

Whatever
Maybe other teams have a more reliable indicator of his play than whether or not he made the Pro Bowl, or maybe found the list of centers 39 or older in NFL history includes (a) Jeff Van Note (16 games at 39, backup at 40), (b) Bruce Matthews (16 games at LG at 39, 16 at C at 40), and © nobody else.
I smell collusion
With this years induction into the baseball HOF of Andre Dawson I recall the owners getting together to not sign free agents. Being a Hall of Fame caliber player and couldn’t find a place on the roster Andre Dawson had to settle for whatever the Cubs would give him. Being a Cub fan I was glad to see him signed but knew it stunk for him. If it drags on I hope Mawae can make em pay for it.
That collusion argument is very tough to make at the age of 39.
It’s entirely believable that no one wants to take the chance on signing a guy who’s at that age. I mean, if you sign a 40-year-old Center, you’re almost obligated to also sign a high quality back-up because of the likelihood of injury. At this point in the season, I can’t see why anyone would sign up for that.
That said, he stands a good chance of being in camp with someone and an excellent chance of playing by mid-season when injuries take their toll on the rest of the League, and he won’t have to be counted on to play 16 games.
