Bleeding Green Nation on Will Witherspoon

JasonB from Bleeding Green Nation was nice enough to give me his thoughts on Will Witherspoon:

The simplest thing I can say about him is that he's average. Really average. I don't think he really hurt us at any point last year, but at the same time he never really made any plays aside from his first game here. I would say that if you're looking for a guy to hold down a position while you groom a young guy, then Witherspoon is a safe bet.

Sounds exactly like a guy the Titans would sign in free agency.  Another thing to keep in mind is that Witherspoon isn't coming here to sit.  If he signs that probably means the end of the road for both Keith Bulluck and David Thornton because more than likely Stephen Tulloch and Gerald McRath are 2/3 of the starting trio.  I am not sure that Witherspoon is worth that.

Nothing like settling for mediocrity

THANKS TITANS!

Once upon a time you dressed so fine
You threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn't you?
People'd call, say, "Beware doll, you're bound to fall"
You thought they were all kiddin' you.

We need to start accepting

Bulluck won’t be back. I believe the Ttians feel like they already have his replacement in McGrath. McGrath has prototypical weakside linebacker measureables, he is a little small for strongside. I think Bulluck is already gone and Witherspoon is being signed to replace Thornton.

Regardless of all other considerations...

Bulluck can’t come back until he is fully healed, and that is not necessarily an imminent proposition. So as I said in the other thread, I think we need a vet at either DE or OLB. We can attempt to replace either KVB or Bulluck for next year in the draft via that first pick. But there is NO second pick, so that means you’re only drafting one likely rookie starter.

Average

Is better than some of the Titan’s other options even if Bulluck is re-signed given the his current injury situation.

I agree.

Unfortunately, this may be the best play right now. Sign a fill-in at OLB and draft a DE and then hope for the best. Maybe Bulluck comes back healthy, and you dodge a bullet. Otherwise, there’s not much hope here.

I do not believe that Fisher is capable of it.

I do not believe that he would be capable of it if he were coaching last year’s NO Saints.

a big problem...

Eagles fans have with WW is that his play faded, he came in w/ a bang; 1sk 1in/td and a FF…. The man was only player in the league who didnt have a bye week to rest. Now that may or may not have been a factor in his play, but i dont think the Eagles had him long enough to give a truly accurate depiction of his play. He was constantly moved and was learning a new system on the fly. Take everything with a grain of salt.

"Eagles fans are a passionate group who love their team," said McNabb, "if not the actual players. It's not like winning a Super Bowl before the first month of the season is the hardest thing they've ever asked of me. That'd be all those times they asked me to go kill myself."

WE Need to sign TWO MORE Veterans (2)

Not only must we sign OLB Witherspoon. We also need a veteran DE like Greg Ellis to compete with Hayes. If we can sign two “Average” veterans. Then we can draft that #2 CB or a safety while Griffin moves to CB. I believe we can get a DE in the third round who could be just as good as who is available in the first at #16. Because Morgan, JPP, Kindle will all be gone by #16. We could also have the best OLB at #16! So why take the 4th-5th best DE in that first spot when we could have the best CB/ S available!

by titanwarrior1 on Mar 9, 2010 12:10 PM CST reply actions

Titans could also get the best G, C, P, K, and Special Teams player at 16

should they take one of those? You take the best player available overall regardless of position. Then you build your team around the players you get.

Griff can not

I repeat, CAN NOT play CB. He is a hopper—his backpedal is nonexistent.

Read something today

that said Nate Clements could shake loose from San Fran, due to his contract and injury situation. Just the kind of veteran corner we need. Witherspoon and Clements would not be too bad of fill-ins for the time being. Then we draft whichever DE that falls to us.

I'm beginning to get the feeling....

…that the organization does not consider 2010 as seriously “in play” for the franchise.

Looks like they are signaling another rebuild with the cuts/losses and non-gains.

half right

the offense should definitely improve. but the defense is so full of holes there is little option but to rebuild.

Even if we don't improve.....

…we’ll at least have the same potentcy for all 16 games, so that’s a positive over 2009, yes.

I agree with the defensive point, which was also highlighted by earlier posters – which is why I wish they’d go get a #1-type WR opposite Britt, even if only for 1-2 years. That way, we could rebuild the defense while still bringing a hell of an arsenal on offense to the table.

Still, the overtures from the organization aren’t exactly 2010 friendly……….ugh……

i think we all need to realize....

free agency is only 5 days old right now. back when reese signed mawae, hope, thornton (solid vets from winning backgrounds) that didnt happen the 1st day or even 1st week. that took a little time to develop and except for givens where we probably couldnt have forseen his injury other than the curse of the FA WR thats historically plagued the titans….that was probably our most solid FA haul. the key is….we didnt rush into the frenzy, and got the guys who fit our system. i’m still holding out hope we’ll improve the D this FA period.
