Dez Bryant Will Not Work Out at Oklahoma State's Pro Day

NFLMocks.com is reporting that Dez Bryant will not be working out at Oklahoma State's Pro Day tomorrow.  There was some discussion in this thread yesterday about the whether or not the Titans would take Bryant if he is still on the board at #16.

There is little doubt that Bryant is the best receiver in this year's draft, but he has raised some huge red flags after being suspended for most of last season and not working out at the combine or the Pro Day.  I can't see the Titans taking a chance on this guy when he has this type of history and considering the biggest holes for the Titans are on defense.

Click here for Dez Bryant's scouting report from Mocking the Draft.

Couldn't agree more

Kenny Britt looks like he is not only good, but a potential top 10 WR in the NFL. Nate Washington, while is an easy and deserved target to bash, still led the team in TD catches last year, and Justin Gage still randomly does things like that catch in the 49ers game. With Chris Johnson coming out of the backfield and the running threat VY is and along with Scaife and a potentially developing Cook at TE, what will another receiver, even as potentially good as Dez Bryant is, add to this team?

It’s gotta be a Defensive Lineman or a Corner at #16.

one caveat

i think i could make a pretty good argument that even if they draft defense with every pick in this draft, it will still probably suck this year. so maybe you could justify taking this guy to truly make the offense something scary, and then commit to fixing the defense over the long haul. i just don’t see any quick fixes for this unit, short of drafting jevon kearse again, so if a truly gifted playmaker like bryant comes available at 16, i dont think i could fault them for snatching him up. then we spend this season trying to out score people while we take the time we are going to need anyway to develop young talent on defense.

i think i just talked myself into bryant if he is there. yep, im sure of it.

if i thought

there was any way this defense would be halfway decent this year, i’d say it has to be a de or cb. but im pretty positive the defense is gonna be lousy regardless of who we draft, as it is basically in rebuilding mode. one or two rookies aren’t going to turn this thing around over night.
the offense, however, could be great this year, and if bryant can push it over the top then that’s the play i would make.

He is just a football player

He could play DE; he has a high motor. Carlos wouldn’t like though.

Because if you are referring to HIM, HE should be capitalized.

hal covered all of my thoughts on this one.

This offense may be on the verge of being excellent. The defense, on the other hand, is completely broken. I think we need to be excellent at something. Adding Bryant to the mix may be the missing piece to put us over the top on offense.

by SuperHorn on Mar 9, 2010 11:57 AM CST up reply actions

I would counter with

1) Another WR is not what will keep this team from scoring 40 or not. It will be on Vince, for the most part. If Vince continues to develop, then Britt and Co. will be good enough for a great offense with the way Vince plays.

2) Yeah, the defense will suck this year. But if we don’t go defense then the defense will suck next year too, because the same positions will be gaping holes again. And no team this decade has won a Super Bowl with a completely crappy defense. Average? Yeah. But the Saints weren’t very good until their defense could at least be serviceable.

+1 RE: VY

10 Dez Bryants might as well be 10 Nate Washingtons if VY doesn’t continue to improve.

by TNTitans on Mar 9, 2010 1:08 PM CST up reply actions

from what i've read

bryant catches absolutely everything. who else on our roster can you say that about? if anything will help VY continue to mature, it’s a big target with exceptional hands who has great ability to get open. that’s dez bryant, at least as advertised.

Look, bottom line, we're not winning it all next year anyways.

Let’s just face those facts right now, and address the future. Build a nasty offense, and when the time is right, do what the Saints did. Put all your chips out there, get the defenders through free agency, and hope the stars align that year.

And, beyond that, we still have issues at WR. Kenny Britt is a big step forward, but you’re kidding yourself if you think he’s now a surefire #1. I think Dez Bryant is capable of being as good as Larry Johnson or Calvin Johnson. He’s a gamechanger. You don’t pass on that kind of upside to fill positional needs with players that don’t jump off the page. You just don’t. Dez is presenting tremendous value right now because of his recent history. If he plays all last year, I don’t think there’s any question he’s a top 5 pick.

I hope you're right...

I’d prefer a DE rather than a DT though (unless Brown gets signed by someone, but that would give us another 1st round pick so the point is moot).

Brown, Jones, Marks, Haye, Vickerson. Spending a 1st rounder there means we’d likely cut Haye. I wouldn’t have a problem with that, but then we’d have 3 young 1st or 2nd round pick DT’s.
Let’s put it this way, I’d Rather have this rotation:
DT – Brown, Jones, Marks, Haye, Vickerson
DE – Hayes, Ford, 1st round stud, Ball

Than this rotation:
DT – Brown, Jones, Marks, 1st round stud, Vickerson
DE – Hayes, Ford, Insert Non impact veteran FA, Ball

by tdtommyd on Mar 9, 2010 10:41 AM CST up reply actions

That is a very well reasoned comment

I agree with you 100%. I’d prefer a DE over a DT. At least we have a young DT that could come alive. It’s way too eary to assume that Marks wont develop. Not to mention that Jason Jones could have a breakout year.

It depends on who else is on the board

If someone like Morgan of Haden falls as well it would be hard to pass up one of those guys, but if Bryant was the best available I wouldn’t have a problem taking him.

I don't think the defense will be SOOOO horrible this year.

It’s the second year under a new d coordinator, Jason Jones will be back, Ford played well when given the chance, Hayes was coming on pretty good, Marks started to find his groove, Brown is pretty damn good, Ball, although white, will still be below average, but give the other ends a nice breather, the two rookie cbs wont be rookies this year, and Griffin needs to get back to 08 form. Our LB corp ( with or without thornton/kbull) looks to be in pretty good shape.

That is a lot of "ifs"

there is not a single "if" in there at all.

We need our guys to play to their potential. Not "if they can, but JUST DOING IT!!!

Right

but it is a scary thing when you have that many guys you are counting on playing to their alleged potential.

It's not "alleged".

We’ve seen these guys, for the most part, play stellar at some point. Griffin, Jason Jones, Haye…etc. We know they are capable, we know that a 2nd year under a new coordinator usually means improvement. The two 2nd year corners have had that much more time to develop.

My whole point is, I personally don’t think the defense will be nearly as bad as it was for the first 6 games last year. We may not be top 10, but I certainly don’t think we will be bottom 10 again, either.
