NFL Free Agency Open Thread

Always a flurry of action and rumors on the first day of free agency.  I don't expect the Titans to make any news until this weekend or early next week, but it is still fun to track the action.  It would be nice to see the Titans get involved in the Aaron Kampman sweepstakes, but he appears to be headed to Seattle.

Anyway, get the free agent discussion going in this thread.  I will try an weigh in anytime I hear anything.

I cannot believe the Lions gave Burleson

Do some research

They moved him to outside linebacker in a 3-4, which is not what he is best suited to play. That is why his production dropped off. Obviously he would be back at end here. Thanks for playing.

As a Packer fan I can explain

In 2006 and 2007 GB had a solid Defensive Line. KGB was healthy at RE and Corey Williams was emerging. What does that mean? Less pressure on Kampman. In 2007 KGB and Jenkins were rotating and Corey Williams was rising to become a star DT. What does that mean? Less pressure on Kampman.

What happened in 2008? Well, what didn’t happen in Green Bay? There were injuries all over. Cullen Jenkins was on pace for a 15 sack season before tearing his ACL. Corey Williams was traded away (their best DT), so that left the DL with just Kampman and a bunch of no name backups. Maybe that explains why Green Bay had one of the worst run defenses in the NFL that year.

2009…Do I really need to explain?

Look, as a Packer fan I have tremendous respect for Aaron Kampman. He is a great player with a great attitude. He’s a leader on and off the field and would be a tremendous addition to Tennessee. I will say this, I would like to resign him. Most fans don’t realize this, but Kampman was on pace for a 10 sack season. Stats can be deceiving, and in this case, they are. Hope that helps explain Aaron Kampman.

In 2008 he threw 12 interceptions; in 2009 he threw 16 interceptions. In 2008 he had 20 carries for 21 yards and 1 TD; in 2009 he had 19 carries for -13 yards with 0 TD!

Peppers will go to either the bears or the patriots no suprise but Aaron Kampman the player I thought the titans would really go after will probably go to the seahawks. Once again titans I am disapointed with the lack of aggressivness on the free agent market. well done and good job we will probably be 8-8 next year with this type of FO

But look at the money those guys will get

Ya I’d like Peppers and Kampman but only for a price. I don’t think Peppers will be nearly as good once he gets a big paycheck, and Kampman I’d take for a low salary but nothing less. I’d rather go with the young guys we have then hinge our hopes to an aging D-lineman like Kampman. Its all about what contracts they get.

no, dumbass

then we cut Nate Washington and have all the money in the world to spend on DE, CB, and LB in an UNCAPPED YEAR

by joshuaboone on Mar 5, 2010 12:42 PM CST up reply actions

Nate Washington has $9 million in guaranteed money

So if we cut him we would still be paying him millions. But your idea is to cut him anyways, and sign the gamebreaking star that is Kevin Walter. What do you seriously think Walter would bring to our team that Gage, Britt, and Washinton don’t bring already?
Walter produced 40-60 catches a year as the #2 in Houston. They have a much more explosive passing game than we do. In all likelihood Walter’s stats would drop if he came here.
He will probably get 5-6 million a year as a free agent. Kevin Walter is the exact type of player you wan’t to avoid in Free Agency, especially for a team like the Titans. I’m sure you think differently, because Walter has a great rating in Madden 2010, but that is why you fail.
And thank you for typing UNCAPPED YEAR in capital letters/bold. That really made things easy for me to understand.
I get it, because since it is an “*UNCAPPED YEAR*”!!!!!!!!, Bud Adams will just open up his wallet and throw money at players.
And I am the dumbass.

by tdtommyd on Mar 5, 2010 3:11 PM CST up reply actions

you don't get it

I know Bud is not going to open up his wallet. I’m saying he SHOULD. In social science this concept is known as a prescriptive, rather than a predictive, statement.

My idea is to cut Nate Washington and find somebody else for roughly $5M/yr. The best time to do this is now, when we could eat his bonus in an UNCAPPED YEAR for accounting purposes. it doesn’t have to be Kevin Walter; he was just an example (see my comment about if he were on IR…). What I am looking for is someone with better hands and concentration than Nate Washington, and better separation than Justin Gage. I’m fine with Kenny Britt so far.

I hate to remove the bedrock of your analysis, but I’ve never played Madden 10 or viewed the player ratings.

In the interest of focusing on potential agreement, I do agree with your final point about your being a dumbass. Further, throwing the word “fail” around makes you look like a 17yo XBOX Live sceneboy. Go get slurpees with your friends and laugh about how I’m not hip to your jive.

I do not know why I let myself get excited about free agency

I know just as well as all of you that the better way to build the team is through the draft. Yet when free agency comes around I get excited about the possibilities, all the while knowing that the Titans are not gonig to make any spalshes and they are only going to sign bottom dwellers, that are cheap. Dont get me wrong I do not want to see us over pay for talent, but this year we need a ton of help on Defense and I dont see how draft picks alone are going to cure our needs.

by bullrider73 on Mar 5, 2010 11:09 AM CST reply actions

I hear ya

the Titans are a team that makes their biggest splash a day or two into the FA period. I mean for how much we all hammer the Titans for not spending, look at how many of the starters on the 2008 team that won 13 games were FAs: Jake Scott, David Thornton, Chris Hope, Justin Gage, Kevin Mawae, KVB, pre-implosion Nick Harper.

You have to commend the FO for making a lot more signings that work out than bust and paralyze our finances.

Music City Miracles blogger and official Jon Bovi tour manager.

by August West on Mar 5, 2010 11:26 AM CST up reply actions

It's tough because the NFL is designed in a way that makes FAs

older players who have their best years behind them and they are demanding HUGE contracts. Really, the best finds in free agency seem to always be talented players who, for some reason or another, underachieved and got cut, then you sign them and they turn it around and/or mature or whatever.

The other issue is it is so hard to judge if a guy is productive due to the players and scheme around him or if he is just good.

Even Peppers, who probably still has 2-3 top years left, would not be worth the money he wants and could only have one good year left and it wouldn’t surprise me. The risk-reward with FAs is bigger in the NFL than in any other major sport.

Harper was NEVER good (at least in 2 blues). He just didn’t got exposed as often with the sick pass rush we had that year.
Justin Gage would not start on any other team
I’m not sure Jake Scott>Jacob Bell, but at least we took him from the Colts.

I AM glad our FO seems to recognize that FA values are set by desperation plays more than anything else. My main gripes with them are that they make decisions based on who kisses the most ass and they let too many good players walk without getting any value from them.

If you’re 0-6, and you know you’re not going to extend KVB or KB, why the hell not trade them?

What could they have gotten for them?

You almost never see trades in the NFL.

draft picks

I agree with your assessment that in-season trades are quite rare, but:

Any contender would have been trade bait, because they knew the last 8 teams couldn’t sign good FA’s this year.
Considering that Schwartz was stalking KVB ike a peepin’ tom last night, I assume we could have gotten SOMETHING from them.
The Redskins could have sold some KB or KVB t-shirts, which fulfills their purpose for existence. They gave a stupid high pick for Jason Taylor, then cut him the next year.
The Raiders just gave up a top 10 pick for Richard Seymour.

My point is twofold: in this draft, I would like to have more picks. I don’t care if they are 5th round picks, I think a lot of the depth we need is in this draft.

  1. If you are going to be a smart FO, you can’t just stay out of FA against the dumb FO’s, you have to take advantage of them in trades.

exactly

How does one man coach the same team in the NFL for 15 YEARS, going 2-14 some of the time, or choking with good rosters?

The only way is to make only the most conservative moves, and when something ridiculously bad does happen, to get in the old man’s ear and have players who will back up your attempts to sweet-talk him.

Courtney Roby criticizes Fred Graves: boom, gone the next day!
Dudley Guice points out that none of the secondary except Finn can cover a receiver: boom, 1st cut from training camp!
Now one is a valuable player for the Saints, and the other is Colts property.

Craig Hentrich sits in a chair and smiles quietly: roster spot
Donnie Nickey backs down when VY gets in his face for no reason: ditto

The team concocts a ridiculous story about VY being suicidal, calling his crackhead mother up to get her all in a panic just to try to turn Bud against Vince in order to hand the team over to…KERRY FREAKIN’ COLLINS (Who then gets an extension almost as big as KURT WARNER’S)??

It’s pretty obvious if you think about it. Nick Harper over Rod Hood? WTF?

We had Dudley Guice play for the Bombers, our CFL team. I really thought he was pretty crappy most of the season. Apparently, the Colts disagree considering they signed him, but I’d be surprised if he became a consistent producer.

i think he’d be a great addition. last yr he had a 6.6 ypa according to espn. he’s not the greatest coverage guy, but waaaay better than harper, and at this stage “stone hands” mouton and “not the better one” mccourty. prob better than rod hood as well. i would also LOVE kampmann coming here, moving back to his DE position and most importantly providing veteran leadership (which will be much needed) in the locker room. i think what you’re gonna see the Titans do in the FA period is sif thru the scrap heap of those released by their old teams hoping to find another gem like they did when they first signed Boom King from Cards.

by NJ Titans Fan on Mar 5, 2010 2:35 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

The problem is

there wont’ be anything left on day two of free agency this year, with the fourth year players not being free agents. I am having a hard time thinking of anyone left out there who actually is much of an upgrade over Harper, Kearse or KVB. I am not saying I want any of those guys back, just that Kampman probably isn’t much better than KVB or Shepard much better than Harper. So unless their is a trade brewing I don’t know how the Titans are going to fill the DE, CB and LB spots with one draft pick in the first two rounds. On the other hand we haven’t had many second round draft picks produce in their first season anyhow. I am very negative at the moment about the 2010 Titans defense.

Shepard over Harper

eh? Lito is 28. Harper is 35. Lito has two pro bowl selections in his career, Harper has none. Harper was rated the worst CB in the league for pass coverage last year by FO. I don’t know a lot about the cornerback position, but just looking at their raw stats and ages I have to think that Shepard would be a significant upgrade over Harper.

shepard sucks!!

he was benched by the jets mid season. he also the reason why they lost against the Coats in the playoffs. the guy ahead of him got hurt…..sheppard got burned for a touchdown on the next series. plus he cant tackle. The titans like CBs that can tackle for run support.

A pylon would be an upgrade over Harper right now, so if Sheppard can move, he’s even more of an upgrade.

by Teddybear on Mar 6, 2010 2:48 AM CST up reply actions

Brees is possibly

the best Free Agent signing in history, but remember NO was one of only 2 teams that wanted Brees before the 2006 season. You won’t see somebody as good as him on the open market anytime soon. It’s why QBs always go higher than they probably should in the draft.

Free Agency should be used if you are trying to make one last push for a championship, as you are 1 or 2 players short of being elite (i.e. Sharper to NO last year). The Saints were a top 5 offense for each of the previous 3 seasons, with awful defenses. They went and got an impact player on defense (and also because they only had 4 draft picks last year), and it worked for them. It’ll sometimes get you to the top, like this year’s Saints, but it is really hard to sustain that success year after year signing guys in their 6-7th years.

Who are the most successful franchises over the past decade? Patriots, Colts, Steelers, Eagles. What do they all have in common? They built their teams through the draft. Sure they may have a FA here or there, but 80-85% of their roster were guys they drafted.

The Titans are in a very interesting position, as they have probably the most dynamic player on their roster right now, and he’ll only be that way for 4, maybe 5 more years. They obviously have some pieces already there, but they can’t keep screwing around, wasting away Johnson’s best years. I think this year’s draft for the Titans will be extremely important. Get 3-4 guys who can play and they’ll be in great shape. Screw it up, and they’ll have to start looking at a couple impact FAs to get to Championship level.

Not calling you a jerk

Its just historically, the Titans have used free agency to pick up lesser known players who can be pieces in the grand scheme rather than stars. To some extent it works, and to some extent it fails. We lock up certain young players we deem irreplaceable, (ex Roos, Stewart) and if we think they’re gonna be overpaid somewhere else we let them walk.

i think fat al fell out of good graces when he decided to stomp on that guys head. after that i didnt care if they kicked him out of the league. says alot about his character

yup

Roos

and Stewart i wouldn’t want any other tackles protecting our quarterback, they hold down some of the best DL players in the league

Hell, since the purge back in 2005

Albert is the only great player we’ve let walk, and he got an absurd contract. I mean he’ll probably never see half of it, but he’s scheduled to make in the 9 figures range.. and they’re all on the expensive side of the decimal point.

I think they break the bank for CJ, but they do it after next year

when the cap (hopefully) comes back into effect under a new CBA. He’s still got 3 years left on his current deal, so the Titans would be crazy to rework it right now.

Though I am not surprised.....

…I am a little disturbed that the Titans aren’t being mentioned as a suitor for….well….pretty much anyone right now.

Overspending may not be the key to success, but neither is celibacy when it comes to potential impact Free Agents.

It’s hard to justify being draft-exclusive when you’re among the lowest payrolls in the league and you’re already heading into the draft with fewer picks than usual.

I hope that something is going-on behind the scenes that involves adding to the starting roster of this club.

Wrong. We were 9th in the NFL in payroll last year. And you’ll notice that 5 of the 8 teams ahead of us didn’t make the playoffs.

2009 NFL Payrolls: This List Will Surprise You

Below is the payroll for the NFL in 2009. I’ve ***ed the teams that made the playoffs. Couple of things about this list shocked me. 1, the Dallas Cowboys are near the bottom of this list. What surprises me

is that there is a 70 million dollar gap roughly between top and bottom. That’s huge. You could finance a whole second team wth that gap. The giants payed for more than two rams teams.

by numbertenox on Mar 5, 2010 5:27 PM CST up reply actions

Expect that gap to grow....

…much like in MLB with no cap in place.

The “big” markets, and traditionally promoted NFL money teams who’ll enjoy a bigger piece of the “pie,” are going to have a HUGE advantage going forward. Without a cap, we will have seen the end of parity, with the occasional execption of a one-year surprise playoff team.

The owners who are opposed to the cap propose extra playoff spots as a remedy. They must think we’ve never heard of Major League Baseball………….

I suppose I'd just be happy....

….if the FO made one splash this offseason in Free Agency.

Bring in one player who will undoubtedly be an upgrade at one of our team’s starting positions. One player who is better enough than a current strater that we will have undoubtedly upgrade said position.

I didnt realize OLB Kirk Morrison was a FA. He is a tackling machine!!! PLus Redskins CB Carlos Rodgers is a FA. Hes ready for a starting job. Both of these guys fit the Titans style of under the radar, quality players.

If he'll come cheap and provide solid veteran depth, I am for him.

He has been a fairly productive player in his career. Since I am in New jersey, I have the “honor” of hearing all about the Jets, Giants, and Eagles ALL of the time. Douglas is a decent role player on a d-line.

by slo-verado on Mar 6, 2010 10:51 AM CST up reply actions

decent role player but....

also from same area with same “honor” – he’s not gonna bring anything spectacular. id rather sign charles grant on a low-risk/high-reward kinda deal. also if kirk morrison’s avail….i’d be all for that!!
