Tennessee Titans Morning Links: VY's Big Pay Day Edition
Welcome to the Titans, Will Witherspoon. The veteran LB should provide good depth behind the aging and injury prone David Thornton, as well as some insurance should Bulluck's recovery from a knee injury not progress quickly. I know the Eagles bloggers didn't have much to say about him, but Witherspoon is a heck of an athlete who I completely trust under the expert tutelage of David McGinnis. This signing also severely decreases the chances we take a LB with that first pick in the draft.
Further proof that even Jeff Fisher isn't above saying dumb things when it comes to Football Jesus:
He said he believes former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow "is going to be a really good player. He's a winner. He just wins football games, just like (Titans QB) Vince Young just wins football games."
Who knew tight ends/H-backs could 'just win games'?
In a related story, if you need a loan, here's the man to call today.
Follow us through the link to find out where Fisher and Reinfeldt were (or weren't) as free agency opened...
Terry McCormick writes about whether or not the Titans have a clear free agency plan, given that as the market opened Fisher was out of state and Reinfeldt was speaking at a local high school. It's a good read, alhough there's one bit I take issue with: McCormick says we weren't drafting for need when we took CJ. That's a bit untrue as Fisher said right after the draft what every fan had been saying that off-season: we have to get a playmaker. So yes, we weren't drafting for positional need, but we were drafting for strategic need.
If the Titans wish to sign their second ex-Eagle this offseason in Jason Babin, they'll need to outbid the Philadelphia front-office. Because of these screwy non-cap rules the Eagles have the 'right of first refusal' on any offer, making Babin essentially a non-compensation RFA.
Paul K is starting to question whether we should've made the trade that brought Jared Cook last year. The really annoying part is that we drafted two Juniors in the second round last year and got minimal production from them. That had better change this year on both accounts.
Jim Sorgi's tombstone will read "Here lies Jim Sorgi, lifetime understudy to the Manning Clan."
Master blaster Phileyoung had it in the FanPosts yesterday, but bravo to Bulluck for surprising some local kids with $1,000 scholarships even as he may be on his way out of town. *sigh*
Sal Paolantonio just made my day by letting it leak that no teams are interested in hiring an overrated, nominally-remorseful hack to play QB. I suppose Tony Dungy will step in and guilt trip another team into taking this life-long loser.
Every time you see a good Titans story and don't share it with the community a Raven gets its wings! Take advantage of the Fanposts and Fanshots, or email me at mcmaugustwest@gmail.com to get it in the next links post.

Question of the Day
Who does August hate more; Donnie Nickey or Michael Vick?
Titans Blogger at Music City Miracles even though gramsey hates it.
"What if I was Peyton Manning?"- CJ to the ref after they picked up a personal foul flag for a late hit on him.
Its close....
I think Mike wins by a whisker….

Lump me in that crowd too
I have no use for either of ’em, but especially some ass clown that Dungy et al claim we should applaud for overcoming adversity, except that the adversity was 100% by his own hand and, as such, completely avoidable.
Michael Vick is a douchecanoe extraordinaire and the NFL will be better off when we don’t have to hear about him anymore.
Vick.
definitely. Nickey is an overgrown annoyance as a player; I’m sure he’s a perfectly good guy. But Vick could never get any sympathy from me.

Looks like the eagles might be stuck with vick!
Anybody who would have wanted vick could have signed him last year, and he hasn’t done anything to raise his value since then.
There's a reason why Will Witherspoon....
Has been with two or three different teams in his career, and it’s not because he’s awesome! Bulluck has been doing great things for the Nashville community for years, plus he’s a great player! I will be pissed at Fisher and Reindfelt if they don’t bring him back. But, we do have a history of doing that crap, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s somewhere else next season.
by Todd Heath on Mar 10, 2010 9:33 AM CST via mobile reply actions
Those reasons for Will include..
Getting drafted in Carolina, playing out his deal, then taking a decent contract from the Rams.
Spagnolo takes over the Rams, changes the defense, and now Will no longer fits. Coincidentally the Rams have WR injuries all over the place so the become desperate for a wide out.
The Eagles happen to have a young talented WR buried on their depth chart. They happen to need linebackers as much as the Rams need WRs. So a trade involving those respective positions of need occurs. From his deal with the Rams, Will Witherspoon is set to be owed a $5 million roster bonus. The Eagle did what most teams would do and cut him in hopes of resigning him to a new deal and avoiding paying that bonus. He becomes an UFA for a 2nd time in his career.
In step the Titans, who happen to need a good, proven, veteran, linebacker. It’s not like this guy keeps getting cut because he sucks.
^^^
he’s right on why Witherspoon was shuffled around. I think St. Louis also signed Witherspoon and moved him to MLB, where he never was comfortable.
Still, he’s no replacement for Bulluck.
Music City Miracles blogger and official Jon Bovi tour manager.
But then again
Who would we accept as a replacement for Bulluck? Patrick Willis isn’t walking through that door.

They made the best of a bad situation.
The only bright spot is that the situation was unavoidable. Even if they’d re-signed Bulluck last year, he’s still hurt, and we’d still need a veteran LB.

the question is tho....
if in fact, we end up replacing KBull, which KBull are we replacing? the one who’s played 10 more than solid seasons? or an aging KBull with limited effectiveness due to his injury? as much as i want him to come back and feel we need him back, and want him to experience the Uper Bowl in Titans blue, i think the jury’s still out on how well he’ll play comin off the injury.
by NJ Titans Fan on Mar 10, 2010 6:30 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
We can't put a team together
out of the guys who are best in the community. There is a strong possibility KBull is never going to be the player he was going forward. It is not a bad decison to move on. Guys get old, they break down and teams move on. That’s the NFL.
Stormcrow....
is right. I am sad to admit it as much as I love KB53, there is a good chance he will have lost a step…I dont want that to happen but we just have to be proactive…this injury really happened at the worst time…not saying that an injury ever happens at a good time but it was just unfortunate for him…

Babin ROFR = Contractual, Not CBA
Babin is a 6th year player who’s an unrestricted free agent, but the Eagles negotiated a right of first refusal on offers. My guess is the Eagles wanted at least a 2 year deal, Babin wanted a 1 year deal (since any 2nd year wouldn’t be guaranteed, so he would have no upside and all the downside), and the ROFR was the compromise.
thanks for the clarification
I didn’t have time to read in-depth on it that one morning

Tim Tebow
will have a career path similar to Jared Lorenzen.
Book it.

August has spoken.....
All heed the direction of the wise one…on another note…after our flag football victory against a team named “Balls Deep”, Jared Lorenzen came up in our football discussion….Where is he????

I think he washed out after the Giants cut him
last I heard about him was an audition with the Colts (when Sorgi was gimpy, I think) a year or so ago.
Music City Miracles blogger and official Jon Bovi tour manager.
by August West on Mar 10, 2010 10:16 AM CST up reply actions
But why did the Giants cut him?
Lorenzen was a serviceable back-up. Since he’s been gone, they’ve had a serious parade of losers. David Carr, Jim Sorgi, somebody else who’s even more forgettable than those two. Meanwhile, Lorenzen could actually push Manning. He wasn’t in any danger of winning the starter’s job outright, but he could play and win games and did so more than once.
Weird.

if you dont yet realize
that this team has no interest in the FA day 1 clusterf*ck, you should pay more attention. day 1 signees are overpaid 99.9% of the time and that’s just not ever gonna be something that bud and his wallet are interested in.
