2009 Tennessee Titans Roster Review: Linebackers
Not sure if you have heard this or not, but Keith Bulluck is set to become a free agent in a couple of days. Since his name is the first thing you think of when you hear the words Titans and linebacker together, we will start this roster review with him.
Bulluck was having another solid season before his season was cut short with an ACL injury in the game against the Dolphins. The concerns with Bulluck are obvious- he turns 33 in April and is coming off a serious knee injury, but it will be tough for the Titans to replace what he brings to the organization on and off the field. It would seem to be in the best interest of both parties to work out a short-term incentive latent laden deal because it is doubtful that any club is going to give KB a long term deal. That would minimize the risk for the Titans and give KB the chance to prove that he can still play.
Stephen Tulloch is the emerging star of this group.
He has gotten better every single year and is a valuable commodity because he can play inside and outside. The knock on him early was he was to aggressive and sometimes didn't play his assignments, but he proved last year that he can keep that same aggression while playing within the system.
Tully is set to become a restricted free agent with no CBA and is essential that the Titans get something done with him because of the question marks surrounding the other linebackers.
David Thornton is another solid linebacker, but he has had a lot of problems staying healthy the last couple of years.Thornton is still under contract, and his agent said this week that he has no intentions in retiring. It will be interesting to see what happens with him with all of the question marks surrounding the other linebackers, but I don't see him in the two-toned blue next season.
Gerald McRath showed signs that he is going to be a good linebacker in this league, which is good because he is going to be a guy the Titans are going to lean on heavily.
McRath saw a lot of action in '09 filling in for Bulluck and Thornton and played well. He will enter camp with a starting spot because there is a 0% chance that both KB and Thornton are back. He should be even better with a full offseason to learn under Dave McGinnis.
There are other linebackers on the roster but none of them are any good. Linebacker is a spot that the Titans will be targeting on draft day because they need depth if nothing else.

Draft WEATHERSPOON FIRST ROUND
& Let Sean compete W/ McRath! Crap that’s only 1 spot. Since Bulluck & Thorton are already gone. I guess we must draft an OLB!!!!
i say pick up carlos dansby in free agency and let mcgrath start on the other side.
dansby is a machine and a leader

Hasn't done anything to show me he is

"What if I was Peyton Manning?"- CJ to the ref after they picked up a personal foul flag for a late hit on him.
I'm still holding out hope for Stanford
He’s a good athlete. Tully didn’t see much more time his first two years either, so hopefully the coaching staff is still working with him.

I wish everything was like Madden.
Put me in control of the franchise and we win 10 straight SBs!

tulloch....
ok i don’t get it …….why does everyone think he is a “emerging star” i watch all the games and i’m not impressed. he misses to many tackles, takes bad angles (think michael griffin), and gets swallowed up by centers and guards way to often. but sure, he makes alot of tackles after he gets driven off the ball 7 yards down field…..i must be watching the wrong guy
Your nuts!
I recorded some games this yr, watched 2 of em last night… What are you talking about? The only time I saw him make tackles 7-8 yards downfield was in coverage, zone coverage at that.

Most of the time when
I see missed tackles and bad angles I’m watching Chris Hope and Michael Griffin. One play that really stood out to me was Chris Hope early in the Monday Night Texans game. Andre makes a catch over the middle and I don’t even know where Hopeless was going… He was seriously headed to the bench or something.

but it has also been most latent
crazy insane thought at LB
some people may view this as a crazy thought…..but with the poss of KB and KVB NOT coming back, (and even if he DOES, who knows what KBs health will be at beginning of season)and the remainder of the D being pretty young, we’re lacking a true D leader. what about moving tully outside (he’s athletic enuff that we could) and bringing in a veteran FA like gary brackett to man the middle which not only gives us more than any rookie would give us at LB, but…hurts the colts at the same time. thoughts?? am I insane?
