Tennessee Titans Morning Links: Football Is Dead Again Edition

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Kerry Collins bought a home on Music Row which has long housed a music publishing company.  Could this be a sign that Kerry, who has long held dreams of being a country singer, could be moving into the business on a much more involved scale?  Lord knows he won't be needing to spend all that time getting prepared any more.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Building a Super Bowl winning squad doesn't happen overnight for anyone in the NFL (the only exception being the first Patriots team that won it all.  They had about 40 free agents come in the year before).  The Saints fought for nearly four years with largely the same core group of guys before they got over the hump to become the toast of the league.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Congratulations are in order for Titans owner Bud Adams, who was welcomed into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame last night.  50 years as the owner of the Oilers/Titans has made Bud a lot of friends and a lot of enemies, but it speaks volumes that he's been enshrined by the state he burned so badly just a little over a decade ago.

Follow us through the jump for more news from around the NFL...

Star-divide

Tennessee_titans_30x21 I didn't see this until this morning, but did anyone watch the premier of NFL Full Contact on the truTV last night?  Apparently the series follows the behind the scenes preparations for games, and the first episode focused on the season opener between the Titans and Steelers.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Once a highly-respected up-and-comer in many NFL circles, Clancy Pendergast has fallen to being let go by the Chiefs and hired by the Oakland Raiders for an unspecified position (possibly secondary coach, but nobody knows for sure because Crazy Al hasn't said yet).

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Keith Bulluck is still working out at the Titans training facility... SIGN HIM PLEASE, MR. REINFELDT.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Any grading scale that has Golden Tate this low is flat-broken.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Upon their arrival in Indy, the Colts were mobbed by... 11 fans as they exited the plane.  I'm going to assume the rest of the fans were crying their tasty, tasty tears too much to drive all that way.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 The Colts are still on the verge of making Peyton the highest paid player in the NFL by a country mile.

Colts arrival

I thought the lack of people was because they came home at some crazy-ass time (like 3 am or something).

Nope- sure is sunny outside that plane. Stupid fans are as-sore losers as that five-head Manning apparently.

So how long is it

until we see a story where someone meets Bulluck at the door and tells him he can’t workout at the facility anymore?

He’s under contract through the end of the league year. It’s in both sides’ interest to see him continue to rehab at team facilities, especially if the Titans have any interest at all in re-signing him.

Something to think about...

Nearly everyone in the “Keep Jeff Fisher” crowd has the same response. Who would you replace him with?

The correct answer to that question is probably someone you’ve never heard of. It’s not Bill Cowher. Or Chucky. Or any of the others that constantly come up in the discussion.

The case in point is Sean Payton. The guy was unknown by most 4 years ago. And, in my eyes, he’s only one of a handful of people in the NFL capable of taking the Saints to the level they’re at now. That next guy is out there somewhere. Most Titans fans are too scared to take a leap and search for him for fear that they might miss out on another 10-6 season and a wildcard loss…

I couldn't agree with this more

The last thing I want to see is the Titans bring in some re-tread coach. This league is evolving. Those “old school” guys are not who I want taking this franchise into the new era of the NFL. Let’s go get some young offensive guru and let him completely change what this team does.

I agree with you, but my fear is who is doing the hiring.

It’s not that I don’t think there are better coaches out there. I just flat out don’t trust our front office to find him.

Seriously what are the odds Bud hires the next Sean Payton instead of an experienced, low risk hire? I know it’s a crappy reason to keep Fisher, but I’d rather have him than any of the available big names right now.

I love the idea

I couldnt agree with you more, SuperHorn. My fear though is that they would replace Jeff Fisher with someone like Bill Cowher or Jerry Glanville (okay, a joke), but you get the idea.

You Guys Are On Crack!

Fisher is the man that will take this team to the Super Bowl. It will happen and he will be the man to get it done.

by Titanfan on Feb 9, 2010 10:51 AM CST up reply actions

Crack, huh?

16 years is all the information I need. It’s more than enough data to make an educated guess on what we should anticipate in the future. The conclusion…it’s time for a change.

by SuperHorn on Feb 9, 2010 11:06 AM CST up reply actions

32 years

32 teams, one superbowl in 32 years should be about average. Fisher is halfway. He should have it all taken care of by the time I retire.

by numbertenox on Feb 9, 2010 3:24 PM CST up reply actions

I suppose you guys would be ready to cut Peyton Manning

He’s just average, isn’t he? 9-9 in the playoffs, one SB Championship in 13 years. He’s not worth the pads on his shoulders, is he? The Colts should be trading up and getting the best quarterback in the draft this year, right?

Who knows the stats? What is the Titans record over the last ten years, and where do they rank in those standings league wide? I’ll bet they rank better than the average. I’ll bet it’s pretty close to the top.

But you want championships. Do you want to pull a San Diego and fire a coach that goes 12-4? How has that worked for them? I don’t see them bringing the trophy home year after year.

by Titanfan on Feb 9, 2010 6:06 PM CST up reply actions

P.S. They got rid of Drew Brees to boot

Is that the organization you guys want the Titans to pattern themselves after.

by Titanfan on Feb 9, 2010 6:11 PM CST up reply actions

Not a realistic comparison

Peyton, while he may be hated or at least a source of great annoyance (put me on that list) by many, is universally recognized as a hall of fame player. He has been to the pro bowl ten times, all pro five times, four times MVP. Setting aside team performance, his individual accomplishments in the league are staggering.

Difficult to compare coach to player, but Manning’s accomplishments to date as a player tower over FIsher’s as a coach. What has Fisher done to be a hall of fame coach? Length of tenure is about the only thing that comes to mind.

The Titans over the past ten years, win loss and playoff appearances, are a bit above average. I’ve run those numbers a year or two ago, and I’m sure someone here could run them again, but it’s not eye-popping. A lot of middle of the road seasons. The good news is, we are usually competitive. There aren’t too many 4 wins or less seasons. It is not close to the top. It does not compare with the elite NFL franchises, Patriots, Steelers, Colts, etc. over the past sixteen years. Organizationally, the Titans are not at that level.

I have a really hard time judging coaching. I think it’s fair to say, though, that Jeff has not yet earned the right to be called a great NFL coach based on his performance. The players may like him, and I’m sure he’d get snapped up if Bud let him go, but he’s not proved he’s a great coach yet, and certainly nowhere near the coach equivalent of a Manning. He is certainly deserving of some criticism this offseason, and I hope they have their act together better this offseason, because I’m sure Bud is not letting him go.

Read this

Teams of the decade:

11. Tennessee

Regular season: 83-61, .576
Playoff wins/record: 2-5
Super Bowls won/appeared: 0
Playoff seasons: 5
Winning seasons: 5
Losing seasons: 3

Though quite successful in terms of regular-season play, the Titans’ decade has been marred by twice having the AFC’s No. 1 seed in the playoffs, only to lose their postseason opener at home to those scrappy Baltimore Ravens in 2000 and 2008. You have to tip your hat to Tennessee’s ability to endure some lean years in the middle of the decade. After making the playoffs three out of the first four years, they missed three years in a row, but have since gone to the postseason in both 2007 and 2008.

The Titans regular season record is tied for 7th over the last decade.

You’re comparison to Peyton doesn’t hold any water, and I’m not going to address it. If you can’t see the differences in talent between Jeff Fisher and Peyton Manning, I’m probably wasting my time.

As for the San Diego comparison, the first thing I would say is that there is risk involved with firing a coach. Two things you’re missing:

1) Jeff Fisher didn’t win 14 games last year.
2) As for your defense of Marty Schottenheimer, well it tells me all I need to know. The guy hasn’t won a playoff game since 1994. Since his departure, the Chargers went to the Conference Championship and the division championship. And, it was under his watch that Brees was let go. So to answer your question, YES. I’d love to “pull a San Diego”. Regular season wins mean nothing. The Chargers traded 14-2 and one and done for 11-5 the next season in the conference championship game. Upgrade.

I wasn't comparing Fisher to Manning

I was comparing everyone’s attitude of wanting to dump Fisher for doing a great job other than a few missteps in the playoffs to being completely illogical. I’m sorry, I disagree with the feeling that he isn’t getting the job done.

Thanks for the link to that article though. Obviously I thought they had fared better than that. It doesn’t change my idea of the job Fisher is doing though.

Yeah, look at the Broncos...

they brought in that young guy full of piss & vinegar and really got everybody fired up. They stalled in the last part of the season, but I think they still won more games than they were projected to.

by titansfan4ever on Feb 9, 2010 11:18 AM CST up reply actions

though honestly

the only reason they were expected to win so few games is because he botched personnel decision after personnel decision. It’s always easy to exceed expectations when they’re in the gutter.

Late season losses to Oakland and Kansas City aren’t exactly encouraging.

Music City Miracles blogger and official Jon Bovi tour manager.

by August West on Feb 9, 2010 11:26 AM CST up reply actions

Definitely not encouraging.

I’m not sure what to think of McDaniels. However, I would like to see what someone creative like him, or Payton, would do with our personnel.

I feel like has the personnel to be revolutionary. That sounds dramatic, but you’ve got the best guy to ever run the zone read at QB. And, the best RB in the NFL, who’s biggest strengths are good cuts and unreal speed, two of the most important qualities in a zone read back. That doesn’t mean we have to go to an all out zone-read, spread. But, there are certainly better ways to keep a defense on its heels than the offense that’s currently in place.

If you're looking for a guy to bring in.

Gus Malzahn. Bring him in as a QB coach, and let him implement a new offense with some guidance from Dinger. I think this guy could be the Bill Walsh of our generation.

From the first page of that book:
In my opinion, two different types of “no huddle” philosophies exist. The first one involves getting to the line of scrimmage, seeing how the defense is alighned, and then having enough time to signal in the proper play that has the best chance of being successful. The second philosophy of the no huddle is the two-minute offense that has a fast and furious pace that you would run toward the end of the game when you ware behind. The HURRY UP NO HUDDLE is just as its title says. It is the second philosophy that I described. The only difference is we run our offense at that fast and furious pace the entire game.

That. Sounds. Awesome.

it's easy to bring up Payton's success as a reason to make a change

I could just as easily bring up someone like Cam Cameron as a reason to not make a change. for every great success story you could bring up I could bring a miserable failure. some of these great assistant coaches just aren’t cut out to be head coaches and much like the draft it is a crapshoot because none of them have been asked to carry the full load up to that point.

Do you mind if we dance with your dates?

by TitanFan2K on Feb 9, 2010 11:49 AM CST up reply actions

That's true.

There’s no question that there’s a ton of risk involved with replacing Fisher. The question you have to ask is are you willing to take that risk for a shot at a Super Bowl, or do you continue to ride Fisher to 10 win seasons with a +/- 3 win variance every year? The Super Bowl is the goal. Fisher has proven to me that he can’t get us there. That being the case, I can deal with suffering through some bad seasons to find the guy who can get us there.

The Vikings would have been playing in the SB had

it not been for turnovers, it is not always coaching that gets you far.. Childress has done a remarkable job with the Vikings, but they did not get to the SB. Little things, not necessarily coaching keep teams from getting to the coveted grand stage. Fisher does have some things that irk me, but so do other coaches. I would certainly entertain the thought of someone else at the helm. Is there a Harbaugh not coaching somewhere that could come in. Mix it up and see what happens.
