Tennessee Titans Morning Links: Juxtaposition Edition
The Titans' ineptitude regarding personnel decisions can be summed up in this one juxtaposition: while Keith Bulluck is headed for the open market, the team is negotiating to bring back career 53rd man Donnie Nickey. I'm sure Nickey will enjoy another season of being our token 'blue-collar guy' who averages about $200,000 per dumb-luck special teams tackle. In less annoying news, the team is also keeping the lines of communication open with CB Rood Hood.
Despite all of the tid-bits that have been leaking out over the past few weeks, the Titans are playing their real free agency plans close to the vest.
Jim Wyatt thinks Bret Kern may have tipped his hat commenting on Craig Hentrich's post-retirement plans when he wished for the retired punter to grab a sweatsuit and a whistle.

Jeff Fisher will not get Cromartie
He will run Nick Harper back out there “because he tackles so well.”

The writing is on the wall.
Next year is going to be a bad, bad year, unless there is a philosophical change.
Last year, we saw what our defense looks like with out Albert. Next year, we get to see more of it, only this time it will be missing KBull as well. What a nightmare.
The solution. Face reality. Your defense sucks. You’re not going to fix those holes in the draft. You’re base scheme doesn’t work without dominant line play, and you’re not going to pay for elite talent like Peppers. So, let’s take this offense from very good to elite. Give Vince and CJ more weapons.
Think of it this way. We’ve all seen the traditional bell curve. NFL talent will follow that same trend. If you consider that most of our talent is probably two standard deviations to the lower side of the curve (refresher course here), you can see that even if our talent gets worse, it’s not THAT much worse. The drop off in talent would be marginal compared to last year. This is obviously completely theoretical, but you get the idea.
I think
this is the year with the lowest fan expectations for offseason improvement that I can remember. Fisher really lost the crowd last season.

Just wait....
….until we lose a game on a missed snap count or botched snap by Leroy Harris.
I can already hear the reasons why “we should never have been in that position to begin with.” It’s not because the Coach set him up to fail, it’s because the team failed to execute Coach’s perfect gameplan to the point where the mistake should never have hurt us!

Sounds like Mawae is definitely going to be let go on the market
from that article. Leroy in, Kevin out. That’s the only card he seemed to show in that interview, though.
Chiefs want Mawae?
Apparently the Chiefs don’t have any confidence in their current center, Niswanger.
The only way he could have a cooler name is if his first name were Paul or Pete and his jersey said “P. Niswanger”.
Good luck to KVB
I’ve loved him over the past few years- he’s “had a motor” and all that sports cliché whatsis.
I just can’t help but think, however, that he probably (a) really benefited from the presence of Albert Haynesworth up front and (b) has lost a step in his old age.
Now, if the Redskins are looking to gobble him up in FA and have also invested some of that monopoly money in a time machine, I think he’ll do just dandy. But I can’t help but think KVB’s time in the NFL is rounding down to a finish.
On the other hand, if we can keep him on the cheap, that’d be great for the Titans. I think if attitudes could rub off on guys, his would be at the top of the list for one that you’d want.
im so pissed
this titans team is looking to be horrible this year. we are resigning the players we dont really need and letting the players we do need go. it will be hard to be a titans fan this year. there aren’t too many players on the team i really care for as it is. i mean chris johnson is a beast but i anticipate a holdout that would make me not very happy with him as a fan. im still not sold on vy. although he looked decent this year, that was all it was, decent. our defense is in shambles and only gonna get worse. its like i said earlier this year after we were 0 and 6, i like jeff fisher, but its about time for some change. new scheme, new perspective, new look, new everything. 8-8 isn’t bad, but coming off a 13-3 season with the number one seed, we should be better. lets face it guys, we had our chance when we were 13-3 and we blew it against the ravens. now it will likely be some years before we are back on top, especially as long as we face peyton twice a year.
At this point
I have more faith in VY than I do our management and staff. I’ve done a 180 over the past couple of years. At this point I’m just hoping that either the awesomeness of some of our offensive players overcomes our poor decision making, or that once the FA period starts the front office surprises me with some remarkably sound moves. Based on what I’ve seen so far, I think the former is the one most of my hopes are riding on.
Horrible Next Year?
There are definitly some big questions about our defense, but our offense should be electric.
Also, if it’s one thing I’ve learned is that I never know how a season is going to turn out.
agree
did anyone forsee
a finish of 13-3?

Um... I think most of use thought that the team would finish 10-6 or 11-5.
I personally remember picking 11-5. So the team out-performed by 2 games. This year’s team under-performed by two games. In my book, we’re even. And more to the point, the over/under on the team is about 2 games off of expected. Thus, if most folks think it looks to be a 6-10 year, we’re probably looking at something between 4-12 at worst and 8-8 at best.
DannoE
"You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one."
Holding off expectations until after FA/the draft.
I’d say 8-8 is a reasonable expectation, with that same 2 game variance. Worst case 6-10. Best case, Fisher’s bread and butter…sneak in the playoffs and lose in the first game.
I am glad you were close that year
I think most Titan fans predicted a good season that b/c as fans we are often optimistic about our teams chances even when we have little reason to be(see Cubs fans). Most non-Titan fans were predicting a more average season that year.
Dont get me wrong, I don’t think they will be good next year. I am a pessimist. I do that to protect myself. If they are bad, then I can say “Oh I knew they would be bad”. Then if they are good it is a nice surprise. I was definitely wrong 2 years ago and unfortunately right last year.

Next year?
When you consider that VY’s record last year was 8-2, I think we will do better than .500 next year….remember, our defense doesn’t have to be stellar…we just want them to keep us in the game….and then let VY & CJ & “the playmaker” do their thing in the 4th qtr….I’m not talking championship here (you do need a stellar defense for that), but I’m gonna say the playoffs (cue Mora tape now) are not out of the question, no?

VY's record against playoff teams playing their starting quarterbacks
was 0-2. 0 wins and 2 ugly losses.
That is the one I care about.

I'll play.
4-12. And the Fisher era ends with a head-scratching, “What the Hell happened to those guys?” from the collective media.
DannoE
"You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one."
I haven't been optimistic in a while.
I’ve been pretty down on the team ever since the first Texans game last season, and despite seeing a better showing from VY in 5-out-of-8 games last season, I’ve still got one foot off the band wagon.
The best player in the League was on this team last season, he had one of the top 5 seasons by a RB ever, and we still didn’t even get particularly close to making the playoffs—the first time in history that a team with a RB that good has missed!
So yeah. I’m not convinced. They can only draft so many players this season, and there’s no 2nd Rounder, and even if they do draft EXTREMELY well, still… all of those draft picks will be rookies. In a year with remarkably little flexibility in the FA market, it’s looking like we’re gonna have the same group of losers on Defense (Tony Brown and C. Finnegan excepted), minus the unit’s best player in K. Bullock.
Jeff Fisher is a leopard who will never change his spots. He wants to run the ball and win with Defense. And that stuff is still fine with me IF you can actually play defense. But re-signing D. Nicky, reaching out to Nick freakin’ Harper AGAIN, and basically hoping for a miracle in the draft without a 2nd round pick… that just ain’t gonna cut it.

Surely there's not....
12 teams we’re playing who are playoff teams playing their starting quaterbacks next year.
by titansfan4ever on Feb 23, 2010 1:43 PM CST up reply actions
I disagree
This past season was Fisher’s down season.
In 2010, he will rally to take the Titans to a 11-5 regular season, and then proceed to get blasted on the road in the first round of the playoffs, but his regular season heroics will be enough to earn him another 7 years of coaching capital in the Music City.
That, or we go 2-14 because our defense can’t stop a little league team.
Either one.
Official MCM Hater!
Fire Jeff Fisher.
Well, I do think...
that you’re wish for a good pass rusher will be answered, probably in the draft…and if we can get a little pressure on these “starting quaterbacks”….maybe….just maybe…we could have a decent chance of turning things around in 2010.

we sell out and go all offense. Try to win every single game in a shoot out.

You mean like the NBA All-Star game?
I know, we run that formation where only the center & QB line up on one side….and then everybody else lines up on the other side…wait a minute…does that mean that the rest of the players are all eligible recievers?

I have been reserved on my opinions of the FO so far this offseason.
Sure, things are moving slowly with the big names, but I actually think they are moving in the right direction with all the contract negotiations.
They have to get all the smaller contracts finished before they ever try and negotiate with Mawae, KVB, or KB. Sure we could have signed these guys first, but we would lose some depth(not that we have a whole lot).
Id rather solidify the roster and see whats left over to sign these three guys, rather than do the opposite. And face it, we arent going to get all three back anyway, maybe one…or two if we are REALLY lucky.
Signing Bulluck and getting him to take a 1.5 or 2 million cut is more likely to happen than cutting 2 million out of four or five smaller contracts. 400-500K is a lot to a guy making 2M, escpecially looking at a lockout in the future. But 1.5M off KVB or KBs contract doesnt seem to unlikely since they are already gonna make 6M+.
Or maybe Im completely wrong.
We already knew our coaches really liked guys that tackle...

I'm just curious.
I haven’t paid as much attention as you guys have but since he is on the open market, what’s the current scouting report on Mawae? Obviously, he has been a great offensive lineman for a long time, but is he pretty much done, in your opinion? If he isn’t done, how much time do you think he has left? 1 or 2 more years? More than that?
Thanks in advance.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

in the right system (one that values mobility over brute strength)
he still has a few years left. He’s not going to do well on a Ravens/Vikings/Cowboys-type line, but for a lot of teams he’d be a definite upgrade at Center and in the locker room.
