Tennessee Titans 2009 Roster Review: Quarterbacks
Over the next few days August and I will be reviewing the 2009 season of the different position groups on the Titans roster. We will kick it off with everyone’s favorite topic for debate over the past couple of years- the quarterbacks.
Obviously the story from the quarterbacks this season was the resurgence of Vince Young. Vince answered a lot of the questions that people were asking about him when he got his chance to get back on the field. It was obvious that he had spent his time on the sideline learning the offense and working on some of the mechanical issues that had troubled him in the past. We didn’t see very many throws that went opposite of the receiver or many throws that appeared intended for someone on the other team. You can’t help but be encouraged by what you saw from VY this season.
Now it is up to Vince to continue his development. It is my opinion that his success as a rookie ended up being a detriment to his career- he bought too much into his own hype. Everything that Vince has done and said over the last few months have me convinced that he won’t fall into that trap this time.
Then there was Kerry Collins. He continued his career track of following up a good season with a bad one. He went from a good game manager to a bad quarterback all in one offseason. He said after last year that he would retire if he wasn’t the starter. We will see how true those words are because he now has a contract with some money on it. There would be no shot the Titans would bring him back if there was a salary cap next year, but who knows what will happen since there isn’t. I doubt he ends up back here which will mean the Titans will need to add a QB either in free agency or later in the draft.

well
i think it’s fair to say that the Titans threw the ball more with Collins, and didn’t really focus on giving Johnson the ball enough, and while Collins did struggle..why was he given the ball, when in the previous season they focused on running the ball and completing sideline passes, and short passes over the middle? It was a nice surprise of Vince to come back, though i’m not completely sold..but he came a long way this year and in my opinion should have won comeback player of the year, just like Collins should have last year. This is a team with a lot of promise for the future especially if Young stays on track and C.J. stays healthy.
You're not wrong walter, you're just an asshole.
Sorry
Collins was in a bad place, with absolutely no defensive help early in the season. The points he put up were enough to win almost every one of those games – last year.
The 9 to Indy and the ZERO, obviously, weren’t gonna cut it, but then again, we gave up 24 points or better in every game after the opener.
If the D hadn’t been so woeful this year, the only QB conversation we’d be having now is “Where will Vince be next year?”, not the other way around.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy where our offense is, but the blame for last year needs to be laid at the feet of those who really deserve it – Fisher for neglecting the return game, and the defense as a whole for not showing up for half the season.
Fisher does shoulder a lot of the blame here
but come on, Collins was awful. Look at his turnover numbers.

"What if I was Peyton Manning?"- CJ to the ref after they picked up a personal foul flag for a late hit on him.
He was specifically awful in the 2nd half of games he played.
Why could he suddenly not complete passes in the 4th QTR? That was the reverse of last year’s trend, and that’s despite having a better running game and better receivers.
I think it really was age. His arm just wasn’t strong enough to stay on-target for the full 60 minutes.

Aren’t you glad that’s not the case? Vince still has a lot to prove, but it’s a lot better than going into next season with Kerry and having to draft a rookie.
I’d also add that the defense and offense aren’t mutually exclusive of eachother. From a mentality standpoint, the D isn’t going to go out and get after it if they just can expect another 3 and out. Furthermore, when the offense isn’t producing, the defense is constantly on the field, tired. There is a reason that the defense started playing better once the offense started rolling in the second half of the season…
Need a Collins replacement
FA preferred, but we need somebody. I’d prefer a decent experienced QA rather than a draftee, but I don’t know if any good FA QBs are going to be avail this year. What’s that list look like? Vick I know of, who else is going to be floating free?
According to KFFL
Here are the FA QB’s for 2010:
QB Charlie Batch UFA
QB Kyle Boller UFA
QB Mark Brunell UFA
QB Jason Campbell UFA
QB David Carr UFA
QB Kellen Clemens UFA
QB Brodie Croyle UFA
QB Daunte Culpepper UFA
QB A.J. Feeley UFA
QB Charlie Frye UFA
QB Jeff Garcia UFA (Cut)
QB Bruce Gradkowski RFA
QB Rex Grossman UFA
QB Matt Gutierrez RFA
QB Tarvaris Jackson UFA
QB J.P. Losman UFA
QB Eli Manning Re-signed
QB Josh McCown UFA
QB Matt Moore RFA
QB Kyle Orton RFA
QB Chad Pennington UFA
QB Patrick Ramsey UFA
QB Chris Redman UFA
QB Ben Roethlisberger Re-signed
QB D.J. Shockley Re-signed
QB Troy Smith RFA
QB Brian St. Pierre UFA
QB Charlie Whitehurst UFA
Thanks!
Always liked Garcia, but I suppose he is likely past it now.
I don’t really see too many on this list that seems an exciting backup that is likely not to get matched by their current team (at least for the RFAs).
Yeah, that's what I was thinking, too.
Maybe Feeley?

VY clearly showed improvement this year
I hope that he feeds from the results of working hard and studying. Jimmy is right, the success he had in his rookie year made him think that the NFL was going to be a cakewalk. After all he’s been through I feel that he won’t take anything from granted knowing that all can be gone. Also Steve’s death was a wake up call and from that he’s emerged as both a better man and player.
I have high hopes for next season with this offense and using VY, Kenny, CJ (the man) and hopefully Cook to give the DC’s in the other teams nightmares.
I'm not a VY fanboy, I'm a VY supporter
I hope next year our QB play is great.
And another 2k season for CJ! Hah.
