Why all this love for Brian Schottenheimer??
Since it is appearing that Jeff Fisher will not be the Titans head coach next year, there has been a lot of talk on who the next head coach should be.
One of the names that keep coming up is Brian Schottenheimer, the offensive coordinator for the New York Jets. It seems there are a lot of fans who really like this guy...but I just don't understand why.
In Schottenheimer's 4+ years as offensive coordinator for the Jets, his teams have ranked 18th, 25th, 9th, 17th, and 18th in points scored (the last ranking is for this year through week 14). The one year his offense was in the top 10 was when he had Brett Favre playing QB.
And, it's not like he's been hamstrung by the same head coach...he's been OC under two different head coaches (Eric Mangini and Rex Ryan).
And, you can't say that he doesn't have offensive talent to work with: he has 3 1st round picks on the offensive line (Damien Woody, D'Brickashaw Ferguson, and Nick Mangold), a 1st round TE (Dustin Keller), a 1st round WR (Santonio Holmes), a 2nd round WR (Braylon Edwards), a future hall of fame RB (LaDainian Tomlinson), a good young RB (Shonn Greene), and a 1st round QB (Mark Sanchez). That is a lot of talent on the Jets offense and yet they are in the bottom half of the league.
I just don't see what the appeal of Brian Schottenheimer is. I'm not saying he can't ever be a good coach, but what has he done to make you think he can be a good head coach??

I like what he's done with bringing Sanchez along.
I give Tannenbaum a lot of credit for assembling a lot of talent, but you would have to think that Schottenheimer has had some say in the pieces of the offense too, and I like the way the team is built with that offensive line and two good RBs.

maybe in the beginning
But here lately he is trying to make Sanchez into signal caller ala Manning or Brady when he is not. he needs to allow him to be more free and use the athletic ability. Thus why sanche is so good during a two minute drill, just call the play and go. dont worry about audibles, change on the fly. Just my opinion…

I agree with the post.
I think Sanchez (and thus Schottenheimer) are getting the “New York” boost to their stock. By that I mean because they play in a major market they get much more media coverage, and because of their run to the AFC Championship last year, they were trumpeted up this season.
I just don’t think Sanchez is that good, I wrote somewhere else that it could be a sophomore slump, but maybe Pete Carroll was right after all and he should’ve stayed at USC. He couldn’t get the job done against Miami, who’s QB threw for what, 60 yards?
I’m warming up to the idea of a young, unproven coordinator…but let’s make sure it’s Sean Payton and not Scott Linehan that we’d be getting.
I have many leather-bound books, and my apartment smells of rich mahogany. And there's this awesome Chris Johnson Fathead over the wood paneling. Seriously, it's kind of a big deal...

Jets fans constantly complain about the guy making 'WTF' calls.
His ’’Shotty’’ (meme on the Jets blog) playcalling really screwed over the Jets offense in the following games: Packers, Patriots, Dolphins.
In all three games, the Jets O failed to score an offensive TD.
Sound familiar?

Yeah, I'm not saying he can't be a good coach or coordinator
But, I just don’t see what he has done to warrant putting him at the top of head coaching candidates…
And, people keep mentioning how he is bringing along Mark Sanchez…Sanchez has completed 53% of his passes this year for 6.5 YPA and a 74 QB rating. Last year, he had a 54% completion percentage and a 63 QB rating.
Those are similar QB ratings to you know who’s first two years (67 and 71). And, Sanchez has gobs of offensive firepower to work with compared to you know who’s first two years.
So, how has Schottenheimer done “bringing along” Sanchez? About the same as Norm Chow did with you know who…but Norm Chow gets fired and we want to hire Schottenheimer as our coach?? I just don’t understand…
Excellent points
I’ve been one who likes Shottenheimer. I have to admit I hadn’t done much homework on it though. I think he has done a good job with Sanchez. He had a rookie QB and made it to the AFC champoinship game. Sanchez played well in the playoffs last year – QB rating of 92.
At any rate, I’d personally like to see a current OC get the job if we can’t get Cower. Cower would be my first choice.

I don't know the full details
But I remember that last year Rex Ryan became more involved with the offense near the end of the season and throughout the playoffs. He wanted a more run-heavy offense…so, I don’t think Mark Sanchez or the Jets offense turnaround at the end of the last season is solely due to Schottenheimer.
Here is a link to what I am talking about: http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2009/11/ny_jets_coach_rex_ryan_to_beco.html .
I don’t want to just continue to bash Schottenheimer…I’m sure he’s a good guy and probably a decent coach. But, I would like to see some actual success from a guy that I want as head coach of my team.
If you are looking for an OC as the next head coach, then I would probably look at Mike Mularkey or Jason Garrett. However, both have some negatives…Mularkey was a head coach once with the Bills for a couple of years. His offenses have also been up-and-down with some top 10 finishes and bottom 10 finishes. He is probably most known for his work as the Steelers OC but he has spent the last two years as the Falcons OC.
I think Jason Garrett will probably end up as the Cowboys head coach. If not, then he’ll definitely command top dollar as a rising young coach.
I also like Ron Rivera, the Chargers defensive coordinator. His defenses have been top 5 defenses multiple times on two different teams using two different defensive schemes, 4-3 and 3-4. Plus, he has always stymied Peyton Manning (so I love the guy just for that). His biggest negative is that he has interviewed for head coaching jobs before and never got any…but I never really heard why.
So, it’s going to be an interesting search for head coach…I just wouldn’t put Schottenheimer on the list.

Nothing against Schottenheimer...
….he’s at the top of the list of coordinators.
But Bud should do everything in his power to lure one of the top veteran coaches, Holmgren or Cowher, or even Dungee (maybe even, gack, Gruden).

do you really think any of those guys would walk into Bud Adams hell?

I like Cower too but then
I read an interesting stat – no coach has ever won a SB with two or more different teams. Several have gone to the SB like Parcels, Holmgren, Vermeil, Reeves and Shula. But none of those guys has ever won with different teams.

And one thing that worries me about for HCs
is that most of them are now analysts. That’s a pretty cushy job compared to being a HC. Makes you wonder if the hard work will agree with them after being an analyst.

My mistake
I don’t know why I thought Edwards was drafted in the 2nd round…he was actually the 3rd overall pick.
Wow…the Jets have 8 1st round draft picks on offense. That has to be a record of some sorts…
