Standing up for Fisher

It was January 10th, 2004, it was my birthday and my buddy and me went to a local bar full of Patriot fans (because thats all there is in eastern Canada) and watched the Titan's in the divisional championship. They had been to the AFC championships the year before, they finished 12-4 this year, had just won a wildcard game the week before and Co-MVP Steve McNair and Eddie George went into one the coldest games ever played ready to cement their legacy.

With 4 minutes left we were down 17-14 with the ball, driving the field, we got inside the Patriot 40 when penaltes backed us up. At this point I am very confident in my team and still taking bets of rounds of beers with everyone at the bar. On 4th and 12 McNair's pass bounced off of Drew Bennett's hands and the Patriots go on to win the Super Bowl. It cost me a lot of agony and beer.

In the next 13 days, Gary Anderson and Frank Wycheck retired and Bud Adams named himself team president.

McNair was never the same after that, he was still the warrior that we loved but the chinks in the armour were starting to show. Eddie George never played another snap for the Titans.

Star-divide

With many of our greatest players off the roster we moved into the salary cap purge and our remaining high paid players are sent packing, this was the great depression for Titans fans. The last few years were so good, and now there's rubble.

To start rebuilding with 2004 draft (Bud Adams 1st) we traded away our first round pick (ironically used by texas on Jason Babin), and only have 7th round compensitory pick Eugene Amano still on the roster.

In 2005 we drafted Pacman and still have Roos (2nd), Fuller(4th) and Scaife (6th) on the roster.

In 2006 we drafted VY (1st), and still have Tulluch (3rd) and Finnegan (7th) still on the roster.

From 1995 (Fishers 1st full year coaching) until January 10th, 2004 (9 seasons later) The Titans worst record was 7-9.

After surviving a roster overhaul, two awful seasons, a new team president and three+ years of bad drafting in 2006 the Titans finished 8-8 and have not finished with a worse record since.

I'm not sure what any of this really means, but what I want it to mean is that Jeff Fisher is a great coach. I know he shares some of the blame for the VY thing, he shares some of the blame for the bad drafting but he's been hamstringed by a cheap owner who seems to be getting more and more involved in the way.

I don't think its fair to criticize Jeff Fisher for not winning a playoff game in 7 years, the way this team has been run over that time frame he should be applauded for having us in the race every year even though we have no business being there.

This post got longer then I wanted it too but my point is that we've given Fisher a hard time as we sided with Young over the past couple of years.  As it turns out, maybe he was right (we'll never know). Jeff Fisher is the only coach the Titan have ever had and if you love the Titans for their hard hitting defense and grinding running attack you have to like Jeff Fisher. I'm having a hard time letting go of VY but I'm sticking with the coach.

While I don't agree with all of this, I do think you have given everyone here a lot to think about with:

I think a lot of the vitriol directed at Fisher is how he has dealt with Young. Maybe he was making the best of a bad situation.

I also think the blame for the lack of playoff success should be shouldered by both Fisher and the players. Heck even our most recent playoff loss in 2008, we had some key turnovers and that is not a coach’s fault.

But what do I know. I’m apparently a Fisher fanboy.

Agree.

Fisher deserves a share of the blame for recent playoff failures, BUT it is not his fault Crumpler and CJ fumbled at inopportune times in 2008, or that CJ got hurt after running well against the Ravens and couldn’t go for nearly the entire second half.

Hell, can’t blame Fisher for Bennett’s dropped pass against the Patriots either way back in the day.

Fisher has underachieved in the playoffs, and maybe he hasn’t handled the Young situation ideally, but with the most recent Young outburst, you cannot fault Fisher for coming out firing the way he has. And of course, there is a lot more that we are not privy, nor may ever be privy, to.

Not a fan boy, just highly disappointed in the whole scenario, and especially in Vince, who I really thought had finally turned a corner this season.

I'm Ron Burgundy?

hate to be that guy, but CJ didn’t fumble in the Ravens game. it was lendale.

but, i think everyone knows Fisher can field a competitive team given what he has. but the fact that he has been the coach for so long and everything is pretty much the same year to year. maybe some fans would like some to see change and progression in the team, which isn’t looking like its happening with Fisher at the helm.

and love the sig.

I used to love Jeff Fisher for this, but this no longer works. You are not allowed to have a hard hitting defense anymore, and the rules favor a passing quarterback. If you play Fisher ball, you are playing an uphill battle. Jeff Fisher’s refusal to adjust his style to take advantage of today’s NFL rules are why he no longer has a place leading the Titan’s.

"...the rules favor a passing quarterback."

How much is Fisher hampered by Young? Remember I think in roughly 2003-ish, right before the beginning of the “dark days”, they started airing it out and McNair got co-MVP? Heimerdinger was the co-ordinator then as well, probably running a similar system.

You know I actually had forgotten about that.

Tons of people complain that Fisherball is not successful, but maybe it depends on the QB we have.

How has Young hampered the passing game?

We have been saying all year that Vince needs to throw it more because when he is given a chance, good things happen. Since Britt was injured this has suffered, but he is very accurate when “airing it out”. At the very least, he has been above average as a passer since last season. He has plenty of problems, but this is just not true.

I'm not going to go round and round again with you.

Fisher was more confident in McNair than Vince Young, and when he believed in his QB, Fisherball had its most success.

McNair had been in the NFL under Fisher for 8 years by 2003.

I guess it just takes him 8 years to start loosening his leash on quarterbacks and fully implement Fisherball.

by eawee on Nov 23, 2010 9:45 PM CST up reply actions

Ya

Cause VY certainly expedited that process, what with all his hard work and commitment…

Oh, wait.

When McNair able to carry the team

Fisher let him do so. It wasn’t only about McNair either. We also had Mason and Drew Bennet playing well. Both playoff losses to the Ravens we had good game plans and outplayed the Ravens. It was turnovers and special teams that cost us those games.

That's a tough one...

On the long balls, yes, good things have happened. Receivers have also had to make some great adjustments to catch them. Young has a good deep ball, but short and intermediate throws he cannot do. Latest example being a potential TD drive Sunday, he overthrew an easy screen pass to I think Johnson (may have been Washington) to his right, then overthrew one Randy Moss in the end zone…same Moss happens to be one of the all-time greats at getting the jump ball, and Young even overthrew him on roughly a 15-yard pass.

I would say Young has hampered the overall passing game, his inability to hit short and intermediate routes makes it easier for defenses to gameplan and stop the Titans’ passing game, because they don’t have to worry about him being accurate on those throws, they can shut down CJ and eliminate the deep threat.

Yes, it does.

For Fisherball we need to have a great o line, and great D with a game manager QB. If the game starts to become lost, the game manager is supposed to lead. My example is 08 and 09. In 08 KC was the best game manager for this team and fisherball really worked. However, in 09 Collins started trying to be something he isn’t anymore, a gun slinger. He is best used in the game management role. If he starts to gunsling we will lose. If he comes back and starts and goes back to that he will not win another game this season for the titans. This plays to the strengths of Rusty Smith. Being a rookie QB, his role will be that of a game manager no matter where he would start in this league because of how young he is. He does have a rocket arm which may come in handy if the running game is completely stalled or we get in a shootout.

by Dagger22 on Nov 23, 2010 9:36 PM CST up reply actions

Game Manager?

That is one of the most idiotic things I hear people say. This guy, or that guy is a “game manager”. What does a QB do. They manage the game on the offensive side of the ball.

by TitansFan4life on Nov 23, 2010 10:43 PM CST up reply actions

You have different styles of QB

A QB not asked to do much but support the running attack and not turn the ball over is a game manager which is a Fisherball QB. A gun slinger has the running game support him, he needs to make all the passes and is designated to win shootout games. A game manager is not a gun slinger, he is not the one the team relies on to win the game for them.

I argue that, I love hard hitting defense and a great running game

Point being, we dont have a hard hitting defense. And just because I love those two doesnt make me love Fisher. I just think a shot of new blood is needed as he has become stale with this organization.

by Dagger22 on Nov 23, 2010 9:33 PM CST up reply actions

I just feel

that Fisher can’t seem to produce with his teams when he has his chances. And the team always seems to fail in big games. I mean, you can be a good team with Fisherball…But I don’t think you can be a Super Bowl team.

at the beginning of the year

I thought the defence wasn’t good enough yet, the schedule was brutal and next year was the year. But then we started 5-2, Bud started handing out t-shirts, randy moss got signed and we all got excited. But its the same defence that isn’t good enough yet and the same brutal schedule. I just have less hope for next season now

You can't really measure a Coach....

by his first 17 years of coaching.
You gotta give them at least 30 years before really evaluating them.

Me? I still say we need to move on……..I hate that Fisher fanboys have yet ANOTHER excuse to rally around now with the VY drama.

Clearly anyone who supports Fisher is dumb. That means all the media members, plenty of players, and national writers are all idiots.

i know you always like asking questions that are essentially impossible to answer and playing it off as if thats somehow a valid point

but this one is easy to answer. they develop talent, they create game strategies, they react to what they see on the field, they gameplan to limit their teams weaknesses and expose the other teams, etc etc etc.

now please, another dumb question/one sentence retort with no actual substance

I'm conflicted on Fisher

I do think he is a very good HC. Twice he’s had to completely rebuild the roster, the first time it took him 5 years to get us to a SB. This 2nd time occurred because of incredible missmanagement of the salary cap. There have been mistakes certainly, Pacman, chris henry, Calico, Troupe. But this team, with this roster was very close.

On the other hand, at some point you have to decide whether you hold the coach accountable for winning a SB, or if you’re going to be satisfied with very close. If your goal is the former then I’d say after 17 years it’s time to give someone else a shot.

I think Fisher is a very good coach. I don’t buy this notion that you can’t win with “Fisherball” in today’s NFL. I just think there may be a shelf life for a HC with a given team. I think people here in the San Francisco Bay Area would love to have Fisher as HC. I’d love to see that. So as you can see I’m conflicted.

drafting is not only selecting players

but also developing them. if you dont let half of them on the field, and they dont ever develop, thats not necessraily on player selection

it is, if the reason they never see the field,

is because they can’t figure it out or produce any confidence in the coaches

okay - youre right rothbard

coaches arent involved in getting players involved, commited, and developed. and they dont win football games. i think you should probably apply since its clear they have no relevance to the game and teams success anyhow. amazing how it would be such a mistake to fire a coach, when its obvious that coaches are irrelevant

by mattd97 on Nov 24, 2010 3:23 PM CST up reply actions

Sometimes change is just necessary. I think that Fisher is a good coach, not a great coach. He did however hire Cecil and for that he needs to be let go. One Super Bowl appearance and one AFC Championship is not a strong resume.

Fisher Mic'ed Up

Fish was told by the medical staff about VY’s condition in this game. The more and more I think about it; the more that I want to keep Fish here. Getting a new guy isn’t going to do anything for us and Bud Adams isn’t breaking the bank for an elite replacement. I say within the next 2-3 years that we go all-in and get a ring before our owner passes on.
