Solutions to the Titans' current Achilles Heel
The Titans' current Achilles Heel is the run game. If you look at overall rankings for this first half of the season, the Titans' pass offense has a 95.9 QB rating (4th best in league) with 7.6 YPA (4th best in league). The pass defense is allowing opposing QBs a 75.5 QB rating (8th best in league) with 6.5 YPA (8th best in league). The run defense is allowing 4.1 yards per carry (16th best in league) while our run offense is getting 4.2 yards per carry (14th best in league).
So, we have a top 10 pass offense and pass defense but average run defense/offense. I would like to focus on the run offense because I think we should have one of the best rush offenses in the league, even with defenses stacking the box.
The big changes in the run offense from last year are moving Eugene Amano to center and Leroy Harris coming in at guard and the loss of Alge Crumpler at TE. We can debate back-and-forth on the impact both of these changes have made but I would say neither is helping the current Titans run game. There is way too much penetration in the middle of the line and the edge is not being set strong enough for CJ to get outside.
Now, some of this can be corrected via more creative play calling, but I have a couple of additional solutions:
1. Move Leroy Harris back to center and Eugene Amano back to guard. Amano played guard last year and was sufficient and Harris has the strength to hold up against the inside push better. This switch on the inside of the line is obviously not working out great, so a change is needed.
2. For running plays off tackle, we should look at using an unbalanced line. I see the Ravens/Jets use this from time-to-time. Essentially, we would move Steward from right tackle to the left end position next to Roos. We would then move Stevens to the "right tackle" position and put either Scaife/Cook on the right side with him. So, we would now have the best run-blocking offensive lineman on the edge on the left side, so we should (theoretically) be able to set the edge better on run plays. We could also play action off the run to the left with VY on a bootleg back to the right with two tight ends: Stevens on a stick pattern 5-10 yards deep and Scaife/Cook running an out pattern to the sideline. Either way, we can keep the defense off balance horizontally even if they have 8-in-the-box. I know this might give away which direction the Titans would run, but teams are already blitzing the running gaps the moment VY turns his back to hand the ball off to CJ...at least, this will put our best run blockers there to pick it up.

Crumpler was definitely a great run blocker...
and it takes a real “team player” to do that, too. Maybe that’s the problem with our TEs, they’re not willing to sacrifice to do the “unselfish” things that it takes to be a great blocker/team player. I mean, they have the size & the agility to get it done, so it must just be a mental thing, I don’t know. And, I don’t know if shifting the O-Line is the answer either, but I suppose it would be worth a try to find out.
I think the TEs could do better
But I thought going to an unbalanced line is another option other than “make the TEs block better”.
And, as for moving Harris/Amano around, I wouldn’t have called for it earlier in the season. But, the Titans have their bye week now so there is plenty of time to work on it. Plus, Harris has played center before and Amano has played guard so it’s not a totally foreign concept.

not saying unablanced line is bad
but it is similar to running wildcat or improving the screen game. It doesnt usuall hurt, but rarely will it win a game for you. It is just a different look that you try to catch the other team off guard with.
I’m an early bird and a night owl. So I’m wise and I have worms.
BOOM! You've been pharmacisted!
