Philadelphia Eagles Players/Positons to Watch

After a convincing 30-3 win in a sold out Monday night game in Jacksonville the Titans will go back to LP Field to play the City of Brotherly Love's favourite football team the Eagles.  The Eagles coached by the second longest tenured head coach (longest= Jeff Fisher) Andy Reid features a blitz happy 4-3 defence and a very explosive offence with A LOT of speed.  Now without further adieu here are the players/positions to watch:

Star-divide

The Quarterback Position

Similar to the situation with the Titans the Eagles feature a "pure pocket passer" and a scrambler.  The scramblers ended up taking the starting jobs back (Vick 2010 and VY 2009 respectively).  Vick has shown very good poise in the pocket and he has finally began to develop his ability as a passer and has flourished under Andy Reid's offence in the opening weeks of the season.  However due to a rib injury suffered in a division game against Washington two weeks ago has left him off the starting roster last week where Kevin Kolb (the starter in week 1 after being removed due to a concussion against the Packers) and company completely dismantled an Atlanta squad that was sitting on top the entire NFC.  Kolb will more than likely be the starter again this week and has shown that he does not work well under pressure (which is exactly what the Tennessee Defence has been able to do thus far) so the key to throw Kolb of his game and force him to make bad decisions is to establish the pass rush and get him on the turf.

Jeremy Maclin

Without Pro-Bowler and former college teamate of the Titans' doghouse resident Lavelle Hawkins, DeSean Jackson you can look for 2nd year stand out Jeremy Maclin to get more looks in this game.  Maclin like Jackson has a lot of speed and isn't afraid to unleash it when needed.  He isn't a small receiver either and can make the tough catches much like fellow 2009 draft picks Kenny Britt and Hakeem Nicks so he is an ideal outside receiver with that rare combination of size speed and route running ability.  He is also very smart and can find those holes in a zone defence and knows exactly how to get open.  The best way to neutralize Maclin is to double cover him with a physical CB like Finnegan to play press coverage against him with safety help over top that will force Kolb to look elsewhere which could end in many opportunities for sacks based on our D-line's play as of late.

Asante Samules and Nate Allen

Asante has become one of the very best CB's in the game today based on his ability to know exactly when to jump a route and is extremely affective in Andy Reid's blitz happy defence.  Another player that is a rising star in Philadelphia is the rookie safety from USF Nate Allen.  He is seemingly always around the football on every play, possesses very good ball skills, and is a very good tackler.  He reminds me of (unfairly) Brian Dawkins when he was an Eagle.  KC, VY, and (to an extent) CJ will have to be aware of these players while they are on the field.

The D-Line

With Trent Cole in a little bit of a slump (sack-wise) and rookie Brandon Graham still learning the system this Eagles D-Line have not been in the sack column a whole lot this season but that doesn't mean they are not getting pressure. QBs have been getting the ball out quicker and without Asante Samules in the secondary the QBs able to do so without much pf a second thought.  But with the return of Samuels VY or KC might have to hold on to the ball for an extra second and that might be all this D-Line needs to get the sack.  The Titans O-Line will have their hands full with this group they have in Philly.

Honourable Mentions: LeSean McCoy, Eagles LB Corps, Eagles O-Line, Eagles Special Teams

Keys To Victory:

  • Use screens and draws to beat the blitz
  • Throw the ball early
  • Stay aggressive on both sides of the ball for 60 minutes
  • Get to Kolb
  • Force them to throw by stopping their running game
  • Win The turnover battle
  • Win the "battle in the trenches"

Biggest threats are ...

Maclin on offense, because he can burn one anytime he gets the ball
McCoy will be held in check

Samuel on defense, because he’s a corner who can break on passes easily and get picks
The D-line is strong but our O-line will handle them for the most part

I’m concerned about coming off the short week more than anything

Eerie-ness ....

1) In 2008, we came off a short week after the Indy MNF game and beat Green Bay in OT
2) In 2009, we came off a short week after the Houston MNF game and beat Arizona
3) This year, we’re coming off a short week after the Jacksonville MNF game and play Philly

Eerie-ness:
- All those MNF games were against division teams
- The following week wins in 08 and 09 were by 3 points
- The following week games were/are against NFC teams
- The following week games were/are at home
- ESPN never gave us credit for any of those wins

- All 3 following games were/are on FOX

I learned a little about the Eagles, so that's good.

I would recommend working more on spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Those things matter when it comes to credibility. You could also throw in a few stats to back up what you say. Thanks for the scouting work.

I agree

It’s a nice enough write-up, but it would look and read a lot more professionally if you included a few stat nuggets and focused on spelling and grammar. When you repeatedly spell a player’s name incorrectly, you come across as not knowing what you’re talking about, even if you do.

But that being said, I appreciate the scouting work. It’s always nice to get a heads-up on the opponent each week so I know what to watch for.

Thanks I’ll try to work on that for the future.

How is Trent Cole, who had two sacks last week, in a slump? The guy is tied for the 5th most sacks in the league.

And the Eagles D-Line who “have not been in the sack column a whole lot this season” currently has the 3rd most sacks in the NFL.

Trent Cole is tied for 9th in sacks.

Philly is 5th in sacks.

Just because there is a tie for a place doesn’t mean your team jumps in the rankings. Still 4 teams ahead of them, and still 8 people ahead of Cole.

That being said, i see your point.

Ok change to “5th most” and “3rd most.” Point stands either way.

From the Eagles games I’ve seen him play in he has been in the backfield a heck of a lot less.

But that might be a result of the double teams and chips by the HBs.

A big part of me wants ATV assigned to Maclin the entire game instead of Finny.

The go route is what concerns me with Maclin, and I feel better about ATV’s ability to go step for step with the guy.

The staff also would be wise to have Griffin shade Maclin’s side of the field for the entire game.

My biggest concern

For us offensively is the ammount of blitzing the Eagles do. It’ll be a lot like Pittsburgh, only coming from a 4-3 instead of the 3-4. Hopefully, Vince or Kerry aren’t as affected as they have been in the past. The line and especially Chris Johnson looked great picking up blitzes this past week against Jacksonville, but the Eagles are a different animal when it comes to creating pass rush.

Defensively, I think you hit the nail on the head, Andy Reid has made a living on those west coast style offenses. Short passing, almost taking the place of a running game. These are exactly the kind of routes the Titans had trouble with against the cowboys. because the pass rush was negated. I think the Eagles will be able to move the ball effectively if they stick to the short passing game. The Titans really need to do what they do best, beat the Eagles up physically.

Also a 2 game home losing streak Titans? Can you get fired up and win a game at home please?

As usual, NJD28, this is good stuff.

I hope, for Philly’s sake, that Vick IS ready to go…because I don’t think Kolb is going to be in the game very long. With our D-Line & LBs, QBs have been getting hurt at an alarming rate (not that there’s anything wrong with that)…just sayin :-)
