Looks like

EVerbank Field will be rockin’. Against the Clts it was full house until the end.

As of right now, 4,000 tickets remain but they’ll be sold out.

The tarps are there long term. Without the tarps, Everbank FIeld is the 7th largest stadium in the league. After the “new car smell” wore off and the team went into salary cap hell it was obvious something had to be done.

In 2009, it was a perfect storm of double digit unemployment and a jaded fanbase. So far, Jags have had 5 home games (including preseason) and all 5 have been on TV.

Offensive Line

How are they in run blocking and pass portection?
who or where are the strong points and the weak points of your O-line?

by Ice0ne (CAJ) on Oct 11, 2010 8:57 PM CDT reply actions

O-line is looking good. The pass protection won’t look good on paper, but most of that comes from the Philly game. The line had Freeney and Mathis put up a goose egg for sacks. Run blocking is solid. Not quite on par with the road grading the Jags did in 07, but not as bad as it was at times last year.

The two tackles from 09 are working out nicely. Monroe has the look of an Pro Bowler, while Eben Britton is a solid starter. The interior is suspect at times, so that is a major concern.

What's up with Simms-Walker?

In week 1

He was against Champ Bailey

In Week 4 Garrard was after 2 really bad games; and OC Koetter decided to go with short passes. David 2-3 times missed him when he was wide open.

He’ll fine.

Honestly, that one’s on Garrard. You rewatch games, MSW will be open but DG just won’t pull the trigger. After Garrard’s meltdown’s vs SD and Philly, the offense was changed to a whole lot of short stuff. Mike Thomas is the perfect receiver for that.

Very good.

The Jags took so much heat for that pick, but if he’s the guy that’s gonna fit your system, then he’s the guy you take. I mean, the Titans took crap for taking CJ in the 1st, but you never hear about THAT anymore.

True that. It seems nowadays the picks that don’t correctly fit in Kiper’s mock draft because they are “reaches” always seem to outperform the naysayers. And lately, we’ve gotten a lot of that kind of flak.

MJD has been dinged up the past few games

And Jennings missed the last one with an injury. Are you concerned about the injuries, considering the amount of touches Karim got? Though he did have good production, its clearly MJD >>Jennings>Karim.

I asked because I just released Jennings from my fantasy team thinking MJD hasn’t had any durability issues.

MJD’s had an ankle that’s been bothering him for awhile. But he’s the kind of guy that you’ll have to take him off the field in a stretcher for him to not play. Karim is an interesting guy. He’s a heck of a kick off guy, he’ll continue to get looks as a RB as well.

I'm concerned

about MJD. He seems get every 2 weeks a new injury. He don’t had a A+ game yet; but he peforms really well in primetime games….

Jenning is impoving bad he is banged up now, I hope he can play this week.

Deji? He will be a monster in kickreturns. As an RB we will see. Bills are dead last in the leahue against the run. If he plays in MNF we will see what he is capable.of

They will choose a quarterback this year? I’m guessing the top two cornerbacks (Patrick Peterson, Prince Amukamara) will be gone by pick 8. So would they go with a QB?

The Jaguars are going to draft a QB early

There’s very little doubt in that. Whether it’s the first pick or later, I don’t know. Ideal situation would be a good player like Peterson or Amukamara dropping to the Jaguars and the Jags then trading up into the early 2nd/back half of the 1st to take a QB. Foles is my favorite.

And that’s coming from someone who is nowhere near a fan. The reason being, there’s no plan B. Trent Edwards is the only backup and he still has to learn the playbook. Even when he does, he’s probably no more serviceable than Garrard. Garrard will finish this season and be gone.

O-line Run Blocking – Titans

D-line Run/Pass Penetration – Titans

special teams

not sure i agree on special teams and kicking………………scobey / bironas is a push
have not watch the jags but other than two plays our special teams have been solid at worst…..

by jrblessed2000 on Oct 12, 2010 1:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Scobee is the best kicker in the league

He hasn’t missed this season. Scratch that, he hasn’t even come close to missing this season or this preseason. He’s 10-10 with only one of those kicks coming from under 44 yards. Then obviously there was the 59 yarder. If Bironas and Scobee are even, then Bironas must be pretty amazing.

As for special teams, we’re even more confident. Kassim Osgood was the Pro Bowl special teamer last year, with Montell Owens as his alternate. Now they’re on the same team. Then you add in a guy like William Middleton who was ranked by ProFootballFocus as the best special teamer in the league. Then there’s Don Carey who’s playing for the first year after being on IR his rookie season and he’s taking playing time from these guys. That’s just the coverage. Watch Deji Karim return a kick and then you’ll see what we’re all about on returns.

Follow me on Twitter

by Adam Stites on Oct 12, 2010 2:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Bironas is special; Scobee is a fluke

Scobee looks like he has improved over unimpressive previous seasons, but we are only 5 games into the season. It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see Scobee’s numbers regress to an above average season (for him). It was just last season when Jags fans were crying out for his head with his 64.3% field goal completion. I believe Scobee is somewhere in between this season and last season in terms of talent.

Meanwhile, Bironas has an 85% lifetime field goal completion and has been consistent over the last 4 seasons. Bironas is better than Scobee.

As far as the rest of the special teams unit, that remains to be seen. Mariani (our kick returner, a rookie) is amazingly good. He is tied for the league lead in kick returns of greater than 40 yards (with 3). Titans sit 7th on Kick Return average while Jags are 9th. Titans are 10th for punt return average while Jags are 13th. I’d say this unit is a push (though you might be right on coverage teams – we’re decidedly average).

by FRANKdubz on Oct 15, 2010 3:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Two things

1. The Bills usually are pretty good on special teams, despite being being fairly bad on offense and defense.
2. Deji is the real thing. He looks the same so far in the regular season as he did in the preseason. And I know what my eyes see regardless of the numbers. I do agree that Mariani is pretty good on returns, but I what I think puts the Jag return team above the Titans’ is that the blocking in front of Deji is better.

by Ewdtrey on Oct 16, 2010 3:33 AM CDT up reply actions

Fluke is a joke

Scobee’s average was progressively rising up until 2008 and then, as you noted, his 2009 was abysmal with 64.3 being is career low. Bironas has been more consistent, hovering within the 85 to 89% category), but as of today they are only separated by 6%. Beyond what you “feel”, failing to consider any offseason work done, or the fact that 4 years into his career he went from 77.4 to 92.3 is irresponsible. Sure that 92.3 was over 8 games, but even if you extrapolate it out the progress is shown.

The greatest accomplishment is not in never falling, but in rising again after you fall.

Our secondary is actually strong.

You should play 3 teams in a row that passed for an average 48 times per game.

Then account for the TD-Int ratio

5-6 ratio. so our secondary made a play more often than they gave up a touchdown.

by King Titan on Oct 15, 2010 1:45 PM CDT up reply actions

The stats show otherwise

If you look at total yards, then yes, our secondary looks weak. A lot of that has to do with how our opponents played against us (for the most part conceding the run game completely).

A better way to judge the effectiveness of a secondary is with the following stats:

1) TD/INT ratio (6:7 for Titans, 12:4 for Jags). The Jags have given up the most TDs in the league through the air.

2) Completion percentage (sadly, both the Jags and the Titans are in the bottom end of the league, but much has to do with giving away free short passes and lousy “prevent” defense).

3) Avg / Attempt – Jags are the worst in the league at 8.8 yards. This is the worst by far. Titans are in the top half at 6.8 yards per attempt. I’d argue this is the most important if you wanted to just look at one stat.

4) Sacks (they make an inadequate secondary look much better) – 22 leading the league for the Titans. Jags have 11.

5) You might add in QB rating, but I personally don’t care for that stat. Jags would be second worst in the league if you used it.

In short, Titans have an ok secondary. Jags are at the bottom of the league in most of these categories. Calling our secondary weak is like a black hole calling a kettle black.

verses our....

orton, rivers, vick, manning…“fitzpatric” not good, and no onw should give up 220 like we did…but your point is we have only allowed 140 more yards over 5 gamesm then you have….and in the pit game they only attempted at tottal of 17 passees…and that was with dixon and batch, and i assure you if rothlesburger was in there theose numbers would be alot higher, and the game against campbell in oakland 180, who is worst then fitzpatric, my point when you went againts QB of some dignity your secondary got torched worse then ourse did….just sayin…stats are showing it.

Points > Yards

we’ll give up short passes to force long drives (leading to more mistakes like penalties and INTs), then we’re the best red zone D in the league right now. That’s how we’ve given up about 8.5 fewer points per game than the Jags.

Raw passing yardage numbers are vastly overrated. We’ve had 3 games where the other team attempted 40+ passes, you guys only have 1.

Torched??????

NY was well behind, Denver threw 50 times and was behind most of the gameand Dallas was behind.
Teams who are losing tend to throw the football last time I checked.
The only torching was a despiration prayer by orton that chris hope made a huge mistake on and ran into the reciever.
You have your opinion but if the jags beat the Titans it will be because they shut our offense down ,,,,,,,,,,Not because they torch our defense

You may

be surprised. Not saying our offense will torch your D, but its very possible, and the Jag offense has more ability than you give them credit for.

I wasn't comparing the QBs we've faced

I was pointing out that we’ve faced stiff enough competition that you can’t just dismiss the performances.

Hell, maybe part of the reason 4 of the QBs you’ve faced are in the top 15 overall is because they all got to play Jacksonville!

/not true, just playing the stats shell game

and forcing INTs

we’ve already got 7 to your 4.

I really believe (been saying it out loud for over a year now) that the Titans’ coaches would place passing yardage surrendered at about 5th or 6th in the stats they rank as important. In no particular order, forced turnovers, points given-up, 3rd down efficiency, red zone efficiency and QB sacks/pressures have been their points of emphasis for years now. Jim Schwartz started that mentality, and Cecil is keeping with it.

Just going by the stats as well

I was shocked to see the Jags have a worse coverage unit, as our secondary is giving up yards by the bushel.

Looks like VY has half the interceptions of Garrard and a similar number of pass attempts.

Sadly, you are correct on the penalties (41 for Titans, 26 for the Jags).

by Akalhar on Oct 12, 2010 3:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

all but one of Garrard’s picks came in 2 games.
And if you go back to last year, we were the least penalized team in the league. In fact we did not give up a PI penalty the whole year.

Relax

the difference is not as big as you think. I think the biggest difference is the depth. Let me put it this way. Aaron Kampman and Terrance Knighton would start on your DL.

by Ewdtrey on Oct 16, 2010 6:43 PM CDT up reply actions

The fact that I don't know who Terrance Knighton is implies he probably wouldn't.

Kampman’s having a good season, but I’m not even sure if he would start on this team either. Our defensive line right now is absolutely outstanding. I’m sure the Jags line is pretty solid but the play of our line right now is amazing. Jason Babin has 5.5 sacks in 5 games. For comparison, Kampman has 3.

13) Do you use coaches’ film, or TV broadcasts for your analysis? How can you see what players are lined up where?

We use TV broadcasts for both the analysis and the player participation data. We’ve been asked a lot how therefore is it possible to determine who was on the field in every position through TV pictures. Surely that just isn’t possible? Well, just because something is not easy doesn’t mean it is impossible. Firstly, the high definition picture from which we work is excellent, and that gives us the best starting point outside of coaches’ film, which isn’t attainable outside of NFL offices.

You can't reason with unreasonable people.

by JagsAlex87 on Oct 17, 2010 12:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Not to mention

coaches tape isn’t really needed to gauge how good a linemen is. They are fairly easy to see.

by Ewdtrey on Oct 17, 2010 10:11 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not saying Knighton is bad

I’m saying that our defensive line is playing outstanding and is stronger than the Jags line. That doesn’t mean there line is bad, it’s just that its not as good.

And don’t call me ignorant please. Just because I don’t know some random defensive lineman on your team does not make me ignorant. If Knighton plays well, I’ll get to know him, but at this point its yet to be determined.

Titans do have the better defensive line

Not just in stats, but because the Jags only have 3 solid or better starters. Derrick Harvey isn’t the player the Jags hoped he would when they traded up to get him in 2008.

Depends

If the Titans run significantly then it could be Daryl Smith, Knighton, Alualu or Morrison. Our DTs must ensure the cut back lanes are non-existent.

On offense the sun will rise and set on Garrard. In my opinion if the Jags cannot pass then the speed on defense will sit on the run. I would say anyone on the o-line but even if protection is limited, David must find the hot route or the dump off.

For me, this Jags team is one of the most confusing teams in the league.

How do you guys feel about this team? They lose huge to the Chargers and Eagles but beat teams like Denver and Indy. Are they underachieving against the former, overachieving against the latter, or just an average team that will end up in the 7-9 to 9-7 range?

The team comes and goes with David Garrard

Like I said earlier in this thread:
Passer Ratings in the wins: 138.9, 127.7, 122.5
Passer Ratings in the losses: 62.7, 38.9

Also, the wins against the Denver and Indy were both at home, while the losses to SD and Philadelphia along with the slow start against the Bills were all on the road. That could be a factor as well. I think this is a team that overachieved in the big wins and underachieved in the bad losses. 7-9 to 9-7 is a very fair assessment of the Jaguars as of right now.
