Tennessee Titans Morning Links: Bud Adams' Hold Music Is NSFW Edition
Bud Adams talked to Jim Wyatt on the phone, and this pretty much says it all:"Jeff has two more years on his contract, and the way things are going, we are going to be pleased to have him here for the next two years and more years than that down the road,'' Adams said during a telephone interview Tuesday night. "I think he'll get us in the Super Bowl next year.
I get the feeling Mike Munchak would be interviewing for that O-coordinator job if it wasn't a division rival in the franchise owner's hometown.Munchal has been as an important Titan/Oiler as there is, and Bud looks to be the one who put the kibosh on any potential exit.
Paul Kuharsky passes along some notes regarding AFC pass catchers, and I was a little surprised with these two:Kevin Walter was first in catch percentage on balls thrown 15 or more yards downfield (72.2 percent) while Kenny Britt ranked sixth (59.1 percent) and [Andre] Johnson eighth (56.9).
Nate Washington, Pierre Garcon and Carolina’s Steve Smith shared the 17th-lowest catch percentage (minimum 70 targets) at 51.6 percent.
So CJ vs. Bolt probably won't happen, but Vegas has already weighed in with the odds, and CJ would have been an underdog.
Curious as to what this season's free agency period could possibly look like? Terry McCormick goes through the options, and gives a capsule for each Titan who will be available in one form or another.
We signed Kern from the Broncos mid-season, and now they've turned around and signed AJ Trapasso, who spent almost all of 2009 with the Titans.
The Titans picked-up basically their entire practice squad and signed them to future's contracts (which allow a player to work-out with the team). Paul Williams was one of that group. I'm starting to wonder if he's a comedian or great at picking up chicks or something, because it can't be his WR skills that continue to keep him around...
Drexel at TotalTitans rates the rookies.
Paul K had thrown out Mike Heimerdinger's name in connection with a possible head coaching vacancy in Chicago, but the Bears announced yesterday that they would retain Lovie Smith, make Rod Miraneli the defensive coordinator and fire the whole offensive staff. Long story short, 'Dinger is stayin'!

He doesn’t really provide any reasons. I think we’re safe, but I’ll be more comfortable when the Bills hire their coach.
So... is this conclusive proof that Britt was the best WR on the team?
And if so, can someone PLEASE explain why he wasn’t on the field in 2-WR sets or basically considered a starter after, say, Week 6?

Just because.
There has to be a reason, right? Coaching is overrated anyway.

*Sigh*
BTW, have you looked at that Free Agent write-up? There’s not a single impact player on it. Maybe Mawae, but at 38, I wouldn’t offer him more than a two-year deal, and I consider myself one of his fans. Even Tulloch is imminently replaceable. I mean, he’s a decent hitter, and he’s developed a good head for the game, but the drop-off after Bullock went out was freakin’ HUGE.
Honestly, I’d look hard at the mid-level FA market this offseason and then make a real effort to keep Scaife and Tony Brown and maybe Tulloch, but really… I mean, these guys need EVERYTHING on Defense. Besides Brown and maybe Tulloch and Finnegan, there’s barely a player on the “D” who’s both above replacement value and consistently healthy at this point.
BTW, how good does the decision to Franchise Scaife look now? I mean, yeah, Jared Cooke looked GREAT in practice and in pre-season, but then he disappeared completely. At least Scaife is on the field, can block, catch, and run the right routes. That’s more than can be said for any of the other TEs on the team.

Can Cook not play?
Or is he not getting a chance? He looked pretty good when he got on the field.
I don’t know what to believe anymore.

I believe he was dinged all year.
And at this point, I’m afraid that’s gonna be a trend.

i think he needs to improve his run blocking
hopefully, with the coaches’ help, we’ll see him more on the field.
he really looked good on The Drive when we didn’t need to run.

I think we could make Cook our Scaife
and keep Alge for run blocking since thats all hes good for.

i don't think catch% alone tells the story
but i’ll give you the conclusive proof:
when you go to football outsiders, it’s astonishing how much better Britt is than either washington or gage.
DVOA:
(compares each player, per play, to a league “average player”, which for WRs this year is Bernard Berrian from MIN.)
Berrian= 42nd (0.0%) —> “average”
Britt= 25th (+10.6%)
Washington = 62nd (-10.9%)
Gage= 74th (-19.7%)
so basically Britt ranks right next to the likes of Devery Henderson and Percy Harvin, while Washington and Gage are severely below average.
Britt’s DYAR (a measure of total value, regardless of usage, over the season) is more than twice as high as Washington’s even though Washington was thrown to 20 more time than Britt. Gage’s DYAR is actually a NEGATIVE NUMBER, which essentially implies that he was less valuable, as a starter, than a “replacement” level player. however Britt was the least thrown to of the 3 WRs, so at least we sorta got that right.

correction
GAGE was the least thrown to. we DID get that right, sorta.

But Kern will never hit the board...
He doesn’t kick high enough.
I would have liked to have kept Trapasso… he got high praise from Craig… but Kern did alright. And I kind of get the feeling that if Craig can’t continue to play, he may take up coaching.
I think Kern was very good. And in fact, I think he is a better player than Trapasso.

Dude.
My man got down a couple of game-winning high snaps on FG Holding duty. And he didn’t have a blocked punt, and his kicks were largely VERY coverable. That was better than 90% of the other dudes on Special Teams managed.

"You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one."
Kern was conistent and quite adequate....
still, his struggles pinning an opponent inside of the 10 or even 20 made more than one fourth-and-one punt call look foolish.

Isn't that why Denver got rid of him?
Because he always outkicked the coverage and couldn’t pin a kick inside the 10?
Yes, BUT....
He was acquired mid-season, at which point you sign the best of what’s out there. Kern proved quite acceptable when you consider that handicap.
Would have been nice to see Trap get a shot, but he hasn’t shown signs of being anything much greater than what we might find via Free Agency.
Not sure what next year will bring at Punter. We do need to bring in at least one challenger to Kern, though.

All indications were...
…that he was going to be forced into retirement by the injury. I have not heard differently since.

could have been all talk, but in an interview on the radio ~1-2 weeks ago Hentrich implied that he felt good about retiring since he felt that they finally had his successor. He even mentioned that he had been working with him on the knuckler.
