Usain Bolts vs. Chris Johnson: It is CJ by a Dreadlock Hair

Ok so I did this analysis because of the recent post by Jimmy here.

I wanted to find out, based on data available,  on who would win a 40 yard race between Usain Bolt, considered the fastest man in the world, and Chris Johnson.

We all know that CJ did 4.24 seconds time in the 40-yard dash at the combine but what about Usain Bolt. How fast would he run a 40 yard dash?

All the data available on the internet that I can find on Usain Bolt's speed on his record winning run are all in meters so I had to do a bit of meter to yard conversions.

So who would win a 40-yard dash between CJ and Usain Bolt? My analysis after the jump.

[Ed. Note]- It is work like this why this man is in the MCM Hall of Fame.

Star-divide

So I took Usain Bolt's split time in his record breaking 9.58 seconds 100 meter dash at the World Championship last August, as follows:

@ 40 meters (43.74 yards) = 4.64 seconds (SPLIT SPEED A)
@ 30 meters (32.81 yards) = 3.78 seconds (SPLIT SPEED B)

Ok, so we don't have Usain Bolt's time at 36.58 meters which equates to 40 yards. The data available were on 10 meter splits so we had to do some algebra here.

Based on the data we know above...

@ SPLIT SPEED A, Usain Bolt at 40 meters would be having a speed of 0.106 yds/sec (0.116 mtr/sec) or 4.2432 seconds at 40 yards which is the same as Chris Johnson but with the benefit of 3+ more yards of acceleration.

@ SPLIT SPEED B, Usain Bolt at 30 meters would be having a speed of 0.115 yds/sec (0.126 mtr/sec) or 4.6084 seconds at 40 yards

And so to approximate Usain Bolt's time at 40 yards...

Increase in acceleration between 40 meters and 30 meters is -0.01 mtr/sec (-0.0109 yds/sec). We multiply this to 3.74 yards (difference between 40 meters and 40 yards) which will give us -0.0408 seconds. We then subtract this extra time on Usain Bolt's SPLIT SPEED A (aided by 3+ yards acceleration) which will give us a time of 4.284 seconds by Usain Bolt at 40 yards.

And so, in conclusion, the winner is Chris Johnson by a dreadlock hair.

Race

If the race was longer than 60 yds, Bolt would win because he has longer legs.

Thats why CJ wants it to be no longer than 60 yds.

WOW Good stuff.

Vegas has Bolt as a 10/1 favorite anyways though.

Innacuracy

One thing this computation fails to take into account is that Bolt’s time began upon hearing a starters pistol. CJ’s combine time began when he left the starters block (as is commonly used in football speed tests).
Johnson has a big edge when you compare the two times because doesnt have to listen for the starter’s pistol, react to it, then begin running. This is why sprinting in the Olympics/World Championships is much tougher than running combine 40 yard dashes. This also explains why some people time well in the 40, but can’t translate their 40 times into track and field victories.
I love our RB as much as anyone, and I think this is a great idea to promote CJ, but I think CJ will lose. Not to mention, doesn’t CJ worry about pulling something during these races (i.e. his supposed race against T. Ginn on a concrete street???).

I see what you are saying tdtommyd

however if a guy is going to break it down that far than what about the fact than CJ ran the 40 in cleats on field turf versus light track spikes on a track. The difference in shoes and runing surface may be enough to null and void the reaction time to a pistol??

Just a thought.

by bullrider73 on Jan 4, 2010 2:45 PM CST up reply actions

i would concur....

Sprint spikes are wayyyy lighter than football cleats….light enough to where they would possibly make up the difference…and if i am correct CJ’s start at the combine was signaled by a go??

OK guys here is as accurate as it gets...

OK according to the record book, Bolt travels 200m in 19.19 seconds.
That comes out to 10.422094841063053673788431474726 (meters per second), or 11.3977415 (yards per second). That puts his 40 time at a very crazy 3.51 (3.5094672045334595454722323716501). His 100m dash was at 9.58 seconds. That is 10.438413361169102296450939457203 (meters per second), or 11.4155877 (yards per second). That puts the shorter 40 time at 3.50 (3.5039807893552427440945506467442), which is still pretty awesome.

Compared to Chris Johnson’s 40 time, Usain Bolt wins because as we all know, 4.24 = 3.50 is not correct as much as we want it to. CJ is a competitor and could pull it off. He probably wasn’t even trying at the combine lol.

Media - "How does it feel to be that fast?"
CJ - "It feels real good."

CJ:
We got word two days ago. He don’t want to do it. He only wants to run the 100, he doesn’t want to run the 50. He said the only way we’ll do it is if we run the 100. I can’t do 100. The only person I’ll ever race is Usain Bolt, nobody else.

lolllll you yokels hahaha

pinoy that is a really awesome effort but your math is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back asswards

for starters, your yards are apparently longer than your meters, your calculations have usain bolt at about 3 inches per second (.106 yds/s), and you have him actually decelerating between 30m and 40m.

however the biggest flaw is that the one equation you base your argument on appears to be multiplying distance by velocity to get time. which means if i travel 10 yards at 10 yards a second, it would take 100 seconds. … what?

i am apparently the first to see these things, which means that you guys are all really eager to support cj. which is awesome. but i don’t really know if you guys would like to see some real numbers or not. (i don’t know what they would say myself)

by arilou on Jan 4, 2010 10:53 PM CST reply actions

for starters, he does not have yards longer than meters

by his calcualtion 40 yards= 36.58 meters. This means that to cover the same amount of length, it takes less meters than yards. Which means, boys and girls, that meters are longer than yards.
