Tennessee Titans Morning Links: CJ 2K FTW Edition

Tennessee_titans_30x21 If you looked at the team and the stats with no idea of the name or year you'd probably confuse it with an Eddie George stat line, but yesterday was Chris Johnson's day.  He earned the golden ticket, and he crossed into the promise land of the immortal 2,000 yard club, crushed Faulk's yards from scrimmage record and rewrote the franchise record book all in one afternoon.  No matter what happens from here on out, nobody can take away those accomplishments.  Congrats to CJ, because he deserves more accolades than he's going to get this year.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Best read of the morning goes to Paul Kuharsky, who turned-in a novel on CJ's accomplishment, and goes further than anyone to put this year in perspective for the young superstar.  Make sure to familiarize yourself with the last few paragraphs, as they cover CJ's current contract, since it could reasonably become an issue in  the off-season.

Follow us through the jump for more history making links...

Star-divide

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Ed Hochuli is one of the best refs in the NFL, but that holding call on Hall that nullified CJ's long run was a crock.  If you're going to rip that run away on such a special day it has to be a grotesque display.  Instead, it was a ticky-tack hold that was completely insignificant to the play.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 I don't know that anyone else sees us in the Super Bowl next year, but if you're going to have unbounded optimism I guess it's best to hear it from Vince.  He's calling for the Super Bowl, and he's claiming to put in the work that's necessary.  Like I said on MCM radio last night, he better do just that because the offense may have to carry the load next year.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Vince Young didn't have a great game Sunday, but he did definitely bounce back from the abysmal performance he put up against the Chargers.  Though, it's definitely getting sad/annoying how much he mentions watching the 2005 Rose Bowl tape.  I mean I'm all for what ever helps, but you don't have to talk about it so regularly.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Here's a breakdown from the Seahawks perspective, but really I just linked it because it mentions McRath and we need to congratulate the rookie on his first INT!

Tennessee_titans_30x21 CJ is already a lock to be the no. 1 fantasy draft pick in most league's not populated by uninterested hacks in 2010.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Good read here from a former agent on what they'd like to see changed in the NFL.  I was honestly surprised how many of these I agreed with (earlier draft date, 8th round added, more active roster spots, make IR not so permanent, etc.)

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Jim Mora didn't want to have to explain Sunday's game to his grandkids, but if I was him I'd settle for not having a timeless tirade like his daddy's "Playoffs!!??!?!?!" spiel.

Alright

I love CJ just as much as everybody else, but this statement is ridiculous by Mawae:

“Unless the guy gets tackled you just can’t make a call like that,‘’ center Kevin Mawae said. "I didn’t see the replay, I didn’t see what happened, but at the risk of not wanting to get fined, if you are running for a record or a milestone you’ve got to let the guys play.’’

It is ludicrous to think the officials should officiate differently because someone is chasing a record. That goes against every shred of integrity of the game. You don’t get to cheat to set records, and what Ahmard did was against the rules.

You owe me $1,000,000 MCM Bucks Gramsey

Rod Hood SUCKS, and he was under the over/under of .5 on INTs.

I know

But he still played better than Harper.

Hopefully neither one of them are wearing Titan blue next year. If we are lucky.

No he didnt

He played worse than Harper. Those missed tackles are tackles Harper would have made and he was letting Seattle’s Wide Receivers WIDE open. They picked on him all game.

And you can transfer my money to my account in the Caymans

Jimmy should have it on file. I gave the number as part of my registration with SBNation.

But he was not letting the receivers run wide open.

I agree he can’t tackle, but neither can Harper. But there was definitely better coverage on that side than the last few weeks. Much better.

Not even close. They were wide open

On two throws Hasselbeck missed if he hit the guy, it was a guaranteed touchdown. The reason they werent as wide open is because they had Finnegan go 1 on 1 with Houshmanzadeh and had BOTH safeties shade towards Rod Hood

by T--Rac's Posse on Jan 4, 2010 9:21 AM CST up reply actions

Well, then

If we finally shade both safeties toward Rod Hood, why did we never do that with Harper?

Retire #9!

by gramsey712 on Jan 4, 2010 9:24 AM CST up reply actions

Because Finnegan can shut down Houshmanzadeh (for the most part) in one on one coverage

But Finnegan, as much as I love him, isn’t shutting down Vincent Jackson, Reggie Wayne, Andre Johnson, etc., etc. And against teams like the Dolphins and the Rams it isnt needed because even Harper can cover their Wide Receivers.

Hood

Let WR wide open for 5 yard catches. Harper let WR open for TD bombs. Which would you rather give up?

I would rather give them both up!

As in, never see either one of them in Titan blue again.

Come on

In a one game sample against a really, really bad team, yeah. I can find plenty of games where Harper didnt give up any touchdown bombs.

rod hood

is who 32 nfl teams thought he was at the beginning of the season. take away the lucky bounces he got earlier this year and he’s a bum who is equally bad at pass coverage as harper and worse as a tackler.

I don't disagree with that.

But he would have looked A LOT better if Tony Brown had been in the game.

I agree with Mawae

holding happens on every play, and it should have taken a truly egregious hold to call back that run. I’d say the same if the tables were turned, I promise.

by August West on Jan 4, 2010 9:20 AM CST up reply actions

I can see it both ways

That one seemed a little ticky tack, even if it was a 6 yard run to me. Plus I am never a fan of calling holding if it doesn’t affect the play. However, on the other side, it is against the rules and if it isn’t going to affect the play, why are you holding? Let go of the guy.

by T--Rac's Posse on Jan 4, 2010 9:24 AM CST up reply actions

looking at the play again....IMO

the holding call was very ticky tack…there was no way that the guy was going to make that tackle, even without the phantom hold….

by Bonafidebrother on Jan 4, 2010 9:26 AM CST reply actions

Then why did he hold?

And it wasn’t phantom. Hands outside the frame+shoulder pad grab+runner run right by=hold. Not phantom.

Hold was legit

It is not up to refs to decide if the hold affected the play or not.

Exactly. Good call here Gramsey

Unlike August, if it had been the other way and a teams RB broke 2,000 yards on us I probably would have honestly reacted more like “THEY LET HIM BREAK IT BY NOT CALLING A HOLDING?!?!?!?!”

by T--Rac's Posse on Jan 4, 2010 9:33 AM CST up reply actions

If I remember correctly,

the hold started when Hall turned his head to watch CJ run downfield… I didn’t even think he was paying attention.

by August West on Jan 4, 2010 9:39 AM CST up reply actions

I'm with August here

I think it’s fallacy to pretend that the refs are always objective and that they call every hold they see.

If I’m the ref in that game I don’t throw the flag right there. Maybe that means I would be a crappy ref, but there it is.

by theologic on Jan 4, 2010 12:31 PM CST up reply actions

CRAPPY REF!!!

J/K.

Keep in mind he threw it before CJ broke the run. If he had gotten tackled for a 12 yard gain, then it’s an annoying holding call, but we probably arent even discussing it.

I won't lie...

I wish the 2005 Rose Bowl could be erased. It’s mentioned by Vince or by the writer in every story on Vince and it’s old and annoying. It’s starting to get to “Uncle Rico” territory.

Seems to me

If we were playing to win, we would’ve thrown all over their defense.

We were playing for CJ’s record (which everyone was on board with) so he carried the ball a career-high 36 times.

At one point I even remember thinking “Sure, let them get the TD so we can get the ball back.” For CJ, of course.

so much for the great Rod Hood experiment

At first I just thought he had some rust from being inactive for 6 weeks( thanks Fisher) but as the game went on and he continued to miss tackle after tackle I started to think that Nick Harper was wearing Hoods uniform. i don’t think the 3 games he played were a fluke but don’t see him back after that horrendous lack of effort. “46”

You rang?

I love it when I am needed!

Seriously though, I have been seeing all the comments, and of course I watched the game. I was planning on doing a fanpost on holding anyway, because I noticed that Pinoy Titan had asked for one, but real life is getting in the way right now. I am sure it will make for some good conversation.

But I will say two things real quick:
1) I did see the play, and that hold should be called every single time that a runner comes near it.
2) Officials do use a lot of judgement when it comes to holding, but when a player goes outside the frame of the body of the opposing player, we see jersey grab, and the runner runs by, well, it makes it real easy on us.
(Of course, my standard disclaimer does apply: I am not an NFL official, nor do I play one on TV. I can only speak to high school and college interpretations.)

I will try to get it up this week, maybe that will get Jimmy off of my back!!

New here.

Maybe you’ll think I’m negative right off the bat, but come on guys.
CJ got 2,000 yards (congrats) and we won the game!
Obviously, we’re upset about that holding call, but you can’t have everything right?
