Tennessee Titans Morning Links: Oh, What A Life A Mess Can Be Edition
We've all derided the new Pro Bowl so much you'd think Bud Selig came up with the idea, but Vince Young will take it all day long. It's been quite a trip from being on the outs by many accounts to being one of the faces of the franchise again, and his trip to Miami just punctuates that no matter what we may think of the rest of the guys who are being asked to play.
Maybe the next time the reps for the players and the owners are across the table from each other they should realize that if they don't get this thing figured out then it'll be 'together we burn'... just like Graveyard Shift by Uncle Tupelo! (bonus link: check out the first TV appearance by Uncle Tupelo, which featured a hilariously young Jeff Tweedy on bass)
Kevin Mawae, fresh off of being named to the all-decade team because he's been the best center in football since before most people who write a blog could drive (despite what some mouth-breathers would have you believe), is talking about the CBA negotiations, and it ain't good news. Now, I'll say this: almost every sport's CBA talks sound the worst right before the deal gets done, but if owners are really demanding 20% of the player salary money pool back all bets are off. Those kinds of demands are what lead to lock-outs.
Follow us through the jump for notes on what Brad Hopkins is up to and the Titans draft choices...
If you want the Titans funnies there's only one place to find it on the regular: T-Rac's Posse.
Gary Estwick gathered several notes on USC DE Everson Griffen, who is a popular match with the Titans in many mock drafts.
Former Titans tackle Brad Hopkins is helping train numerous potential NFL draft picks, including LSU's monster book-end Ciron Black (who will be a stud, IMO), at the D-1 workout facility in Franklin/Cool Springs.
Gary Estwick also talked with Todd McShay about the possibility of the Titans drafting a QB to back up VY. I agree with McShay that we'd be better served with a mid-level veteran, and I also like John David Booty as a project. You never know what they'll do if the right guy slips to our 4th or 5th round spot though.
Josh Cribbs is a pretty cool guy:
Cribbs explained Thursday how he’s going to honor the teammates who helped him get to his second Pro Bowl. He brought nine of his core special teams blockers — Jerome Harrison, Lawrence Vickers, Blake Costanzo, Nick Sorensen and Ray Ventrone among them — in for Pro Bowl week, and he’s going to rotate wearing their jerseys the rest of the week, including Sunday’s game. Bonus points on creativity for Cribbs.
The Colts signed former Titans prospect Mitch King to a futures contract.
Already sick of the Peyton Manning stories coming out of Miami. Can you imagine how unbearable this week would be if Brett Favre was involved as well?

If Brett Favre was involved I would've taken a vacation to Amish country for the next two weeks
That would have been miserable.

I don't think you have worry about Farve anymore.
The Saints blitzers reminded him of why he wanted to retire in the first place.

One would think that the pro bowl would be the perfect time to break out some wild trick plays
What’s the probability of a VY/CJ/Cribbs triple option going down?
0%

this assumes the players will be sober and paying attention

or that they'd actually practice formations

Farve and Manning both in the SB may have been good for me
Because I wouldn’t eat for those two weeks from all the media slobbering, I need to lose a few pounds. Next thing they say is that Payton is part of the mutants named in Heroes, his power: controlling the broadcaster’s mind to just keep talking about him non stop.
I'm not a VY fanboy, I'm a VY supporter
Nothing against Griffin......
but I’ve got too many other DE’s going ahead of him…..1.Carlos Dunlap (he’ll go early)…..2.Sergio Kindle (he too will go early)….3.Greg Hardy (Ole Miss-6’5" & 250)….4. Brandon Graham (Michigan-6’3" & 270)….5. George Selvie (USF-6’4" & 250)…..Brandon Lang (Troy-6’4" & 250)

Is Kindle going to be a DE or OLB in 3-4?
Titans Blogger at Music City Miracles even though gramsey hates it.
"What if I was Peyton Manning?"- CJ to the ref after they picked up a personal foul flag for a late hit on him.
At 6'4" & 240...he might not be fast enough for LB?

He's athletic enough to play either.
I think his frame can carry some more muscle, too. The kid was an all state running back in high school, and probably could have started at most schools in the country. I suspect he’ll test very well at the combine. Keep in mind he’s been clocked at a 4.54 40 time. That’s as fast as Aaron Curry last year, who everyone was drooling over. And, I wouldn’t be surprised if Kindle improves his time in the next few months.
Also, if Mathis and Freeney have taught us anything, it’s that quickness/speed trumps size when it comes to pass rushing.
Well, that will be great......
for somebody, not us.

Hey SuperHorn....
what’s your take on the players I listed above?
by titansfan4ever on Jan 29, 2010 12:46 PM CST up reply actions
Haven't seen enough of the others to really have an educated opinion.
Selvie might be worth a look if he slides into the 3rd round. His tangibles don’t jump off the page. He was productive in college, though.
I also think that Jarrett Brown would be worth a look if he slides to the 4th round. He’s impressed people at the Senior Bowl, and it would be nice to have another mobile QB that we could plug in if Vince gets hurt. That’s a very real possibility, especially with a QB who runs alot. Ideally, you could have a similar sort of player to plug right in if your #1 goes down. Then again, we have so many other holes to fill, that may be too high to take a backup QB.
That's a good point.
Other DEs to look at might be Jerry Hughes (TCU)…Eric Norwood (S.Carolina) who could also play OLB as Jimmy suggested….Greg Romeus (Pitt)…Derrick Morgan (Georgia Tech) who I think we’ve already done a piece on…C.J.Wilson (ECU)….Corey Wootton (Northwestern) who @ 6’7" & 271 doesn’t have be THAT close to the QB to wrap him up.

Question?
What do we need the most…a pass rusher or a db?
by titansfan4ever on Jan 29, 2010 11:36 AM CST reply actions
Cause if Mays or Dowling is still around...
can we afford to pass on them?

No doubt....
if you can’t pressure the QB…..you’re screwed!!!
