Source: USC to Hire Tennessee Head Coach Lane Kiffin

Multiple sources are reporting tonight that Lane Kiffin will leave the University of Tennessee after just one season to become the head coach of the USC Trojans.  His dad, Monte Kiffin, is apparently going with him.  We have been following this story because of the reported interest in Jeff Fisher, and now it takes an interesting turn as many of the readers here are Tennessee fans.

As a fan of a team (Alabama) who has been screwed over by a coach like this (Dennis Franchione) I can only say I know how much it sucks to be in your shoes right now.

Now we get to wait and see what Tennessee's move is.

(h/t to socaltitan for posting it here)

Wow.

What a dick move! I mean, that’s just unbelievable, and all the moreso because Kiffin hasn’t even done anything yet! I grant you, it seemed like his first season was a reasonable success, but it’s not like they beat anybody good.

Wow. Can we get Phillip Fulmer back now?

Im sorry guys, but it is kinda funny. However I think Kiffin is a douchebag for ditching Tenn like that.

It’s official because USC has issued a press release.

Why am I not surprised?

It would figure that Kiffin would come in to K-town, run his mouth about everyone else in the SEC and piss them all off at UT, and then he’d run the first chance he got. rolls eyes I actually feel a wee bit sorry for UT, just a wee bit though. Roll Tide!

There were signs of order breaking down—someone brought a mattress down and lit it on fire. Reporter Kris Budden said some students were burning UT apparel.

Police and firefighters have been on scene in an effort to calm the situation. The mattress has been extinguished.

Not happening. I just don't see Muschamp leaving.

He’s just years away from taking over arguably the best coaching job in the country. He’s making ~$1mm/year, gets to live in Austin, and his wife is sick of moving. My view is obviously skewed, but I’d be surprised if he leaves.

If I were Muschamp I'd be gone in a heartbeat to UTK

As you said, when is Mack Brown really going to retire? That whole “we promise you will be the next head coach” thing is a crock of shit. They just say that to keep him at Texas. If they felt a better guy was available if/when Mack Brown retires, they would oust Muschamp in a heartbeat.

Take the job that’s in front of you, Muschamp.

by T--Rac's Posse on Jan 13, 2010 10:57 AM CST up reply actions

Tennessee isn't the job to take.

IMO, if Muschamp intended on leaving, he would have taken the Auburn job which is in a better position to win immediately.

Sorry, Tennessee fans, I mean no disrespect, but I think Kiffin left ya’ll in a really bad spot. It’s going to take some time to pick up the pieces and rebuild.

by SuperHorn on Jan 13, 2010 11:02 AM CST up reply actions

Auburn over UTK?

You really aren’t plugged into the SEC then, no offense. Auburn is a step below UTK on the ladder for jobs in the SEC. Especially with Nick Saban coaching your archrival that is 200 miles (probably less) away from you, that’s not a good job. UTK has more money, more tradition, and several natural recruiting grounds Auburn doesn’t have at all.

It’s not a coincidence that Auburn started declining the second Alabama got off probation.

by T--Rac's Posse on Jan 13, 2010 11:05 AM CST up reply actions

I thought the same thing.

And, I agree that Tennessee has a better ring to it. I just think that the ability to win considering resources, etc. is very close between the two. So, then you have to look at the things in place now. And, coming in to a new school on January 13, with the entire staff gone, and the recruiting class in shambles, well, it’s difficult. I mean, who’s Muschamp going to hire? It’s just a different situation than what he would have had at Auburn last year.

Again, no disrespect to Tennessee. It’s a great program. It’s just going to be difficult for a few years for whoever they hire.

by SuperHorn on Jan 13, 2010 11:14 AM CST up reply actions

Hey, no disrespect here, I'm an Ohio State fan

But I’m just saying. Tennessee’s resources are much more extensive than Auburn’s. Better natural recruiting grounds, no giant in-state rival to contend with, and tradition that crushes Auburn’s.

The analogy I give is if Texas had a decade-long stretch of mediocre football and during that decade Oklahoma State won a lot and even had an undefeated season, Texas is ultimately still the better job.

by T--Rac's Posse on Jan 13, 2010 11:18 AM CST up reply actions

I agree in principle.

Just not right now. A year ago, I’m with you. I just don’t like the idea of being one of the top 5 up and coming coaches in the country and leaving for a school where 2010 is basically out the window.

by SuperHorn on Jan 13, 2010 11:25 AM CST up reply actions

o yeah

you are spot on. i take the doomsday approach to this one. anyone short of jon gruden will leaves this recruiting class and coaching staff in shambles.

The Dual Threat, Official Enforcer/Stat Geek of MCM.

by hal41605 on Jan 13, 2010 11:19 AM CST up reply actions

He can retire whenever he wants, though.

Not that anyone knows for sure, but the speculation is that Mack is done in 3-4 more years.

It’s all about perspective, I suppose. Life is good for Muschamp right now. I just have a hard time believing that it makes sense for him to take any job other than USC (if they aren’t on probation), or Florida. It would take longer than 4 years to build the recruiting framework that Mack will leave behind.

I’m obviously biased. I just think that if you have possibly the best/easiest coaching job in the country lined up, then 4 years is worth the wait. Any other opportunity, outside of fluke circumstances like what happened at USC and Florida, are probably going to be programs that need to be seriously rebuilt. To get to the national title picture, you’re looking at 2 years minimum to turn a program around. And, that’s only if you’re one of the best like Saban (I can’t believe I just typed that).

by SuperHorn on Jan 13, 2010 11:00 AM CST up reply actions

but at Texas you are going to replace a legend who will retire on top of the world

at UTK, he’s the savior. And while it isn’t as good as Texas, it isn’t a job to sneeze at either.

You never want to be the guy who replaces a legend. You always want to be the guy replacing a hated asshole. Entry point is important.

You even mentioned the recruiting he’d be stepping into. Keep in mind though that what comes with that is the need to win right away. If he has an 8 game season, he could be gone. At UTK, he’d be given time to build.

by T--Rac's Posse on Jan 13, 2010 11:03 AM CST up reply actions

The door swings both ways, though.

You can come into a place with elite recruiting already in place, and high expectations. Or, you can go to a school with average-above average recruiting, and low expectations.

If he can’t handle the high expectations of an elite program, he’s probably in the wrong business anyways. And, I don’t think Deloss Dodds would fire Will after just 1 year.

by SuperHorn on Jan 13, 2010 11:17 AM CST up reply actions

and who says Deloss Dodds will be the AD?

Why is there this guarantee of amazing stability at Texas? ADs leave and move around all the time.

by T--Rac's Posse on Jan 13, 2010 11:19 AM CST up reply actions

he's gonna just walk away from 5 mil a year?

i dont know if muschamp is the right guy or not, but i seriously doubt his reason for staying will be because the HC job is just around the corner. because it doesn’t seem to me like it is.

The Dual Threat, Official Enforcer/Stat Geek of MCM.

by hal41605 on Jan 13, 2010 11:08 AM CST up reply actions

At this point, I don't think money is that relevant to Mack. He's already rolling in cash.

That aside, at some point, the stress takes it’s toll.

And, I disagree. The move to Texas from Auburn was somewhat lateral. It was certainly comparable to the job he held at LSU.

Anytime a HC job comes up, Muschamp seems to be in the discussion. I just don’t think he would be at Texas unless he got the “Jimbo Fisher” deal. He would have waited it out at Auburn and taken a HC job by now.

by SuperHorn on Jan 13, 2010 11:40 AM CST up reply actions

Only thing iwill say is

Never, ever underestimate a coach wanting more money. It isn’t just the money thing. It’s the ego thing. They want to be the highest paid because of their ego.

by T--Rac's Posse on Jan 13, 2010 11:47 AM CST up reply actions

Nobody in Texas

thinks that Mack sticks around for more than 3 years. Especially if Texas bags another title. As for Muschamp, he turned UTK down last year, why is it a better job now?

I’ll eat my hat if Muschamp takes the UTK job.

Mack has already said that he will not be like Paterno or Bowden

Texas fans will want Mack to take however long he wishes, but it is unlikely he coaches well past 60 (he’s 58 right now). That is well-known in Austin.

i think saban's a much better person than kiffmiester.

he screwed over the dolphins, who cares, the pats win that division nearly every year anyway, the vols could’ve competed for a spot in the SEC championship game this year considering how great, a.) the recruiting was and, b.) how great they played against bama and florida last year. plus, saban had success, kiffin’s gonna blow this program sky high, just you watch.
