Tennessee Titans vs. Jacksonville Jaguars Series at a Glance
Wednesday is the day we move on here at MCM. With that in mind, we look forward to another divison game this weekend against the Bedazzlers. Gotta have this one.
The Titans are 17-12 all-time against the Bedazzlers. The record is 16-12 in the regular season and 1-0 in postseason. That one is obviously the 1999 AFC Championship Game. (As a side note, Derrick Mason's punt return for a TD in that game produced the largest dog pile in the history of the world at my parent's house).
The Titans are 10-5 against the Bedazzlers in Jacksonville. I think I remember something about their stadium being another home field for us. Jeff Fisher is 7-5 against Jack Del Rio.
The broadcast of this week's game will be handled by Dick Enberg and Dan Fouts on CBS.

Titans ought to win this game.
Why?
- They’ve struggled against good QBs. No problem. The Bedazzlers have a mediocre QB.
- Even now, they are good against the run. Which is good because Jax is DEFINITELY a run-first team.
- Bedazzlers seem better against the pass than the run. Again, this is good. The Titans can’t throw to save their lives (or their season). However, they will run on you all day.
I feel like I’ve been burned before, but… GO TITANS!

You are a running team
the Jags are good against the run. We are last against the pass…
David has now REAL weapons at the passing game (Torry Holt anyone? Plus Mike Sinms Walker, and the rookies can surpriese you), and if he has a good game he is threat!
I think the Titans are way better then their record. I think If my jags needed 110% to beat the Texans they need 125% to beat the Titans. I think this game will be a hard fought, very tight game with no favourites in this point. All I ask is not underestimate your opponent! Because you do, you might end up 0-4…

Don't get me wrong...
I definitely think that the Titans could lose. But I think they have a slightly larger margin of error against the Jags than they did, at least against the Steelers and the Jets. Both those games could easily have been wins but for extremely bone-headed special teams play. Even in the Steeler’s game, the punt returns were a serious problem.
That said, the Titans managed to give up 34 pts to the Texans, so, I mean, it’s not like I think they’ve played well or consistent. Who knows? Maybe this is the game they finally give up 300 on the ground to MJD.

I don't see why Chris Johnson couldn't be utilized in some kick returns
Seems like we would want our most explosive players in positions to get them in open space. Isn’t kickoff return the obvious spot?
Darren Sproles doesn’t seem to have a problem with it. Heck, up until last year, Maurice Jones-Drew did it.

Special teams is the most violent part of the game
I’d much rather my star player (and arguably only offensive weapon) safely sitting on the sideline until the dudes who are slugging each other for a starting position ease off each other.
Plus, MJD split carries and Darren Sproles isn’t as productive as CJ.

and...
whats your point about sproles? it seems as if you think he is part of the jags offense…

My point about Sproles
Is that he isn’t as productive as CJ. Plus he (at least somewhat and/or used to) splits carries with one of the most prolific runners in the game, which gave him a breather after returning kicks.
Not really sure how you got that I thought he plays for the jags.
Overall, my point is that neither example is or was very productive as a back while they were a kick returner, likely because they got pounded around alot having to return kicks. Not something I think anyone who has a say in the matter in the Titans organization hopes for a guy like CJ.
by TNTitans on Sep 30, 2009 3:14 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I see what you are trying to say but,
1. Kick returns are the most violent? In your opinion. I see more WR’s and QB’s taking violent collisions than the kick returners.
2. You’re wrong about MJD’s production as a back/kick returner. During 2006-2008 as a RB and Kick Returner, MJD scored 38 TD’s as a running back.

We'll have to agree to disagree about who gets a more violent collision
But ask yourself this: how many 1000+ yard rushing seasons did MJD have in that same 3 year span?

what does 1000 yards have to do with it?

First of all
It’s 34 TD’s- he has 4 this year.
Second of all, the MJD from 2006-2008 and CJ are completely different backs. MJD started a grand total of 4 games in 3 seasons, the rest of which he was relegated to being a number 2 guy, which probably helped him stay healthy and rested.
Find me a starting RB who returns kicks and then we’ll talk. Until then, you’re just waving your hands around and hoping for something that just isn’t gonna happen.

Ugh
I think you’re making my point for me and you don’t even realize it.
Of course CJ and Sproles both split carries- now, how many yards did Sproles have last year? And how many did CJ? So who’s more productive?
Why are we even having this conversation? You said you didn’t see why CJ isn’t used in KR situations, and I posited that it’s because KR’s who are also RB’s are not as productive. You are yet to show me evidence otherwise.

Since CJ splits carries
What would hurt for him to add another 3-5 returns a game?
Obviously, we’re 0-3, right?
Don’t you think putting your most explosive player in positions to change the game makes sense?

you would realize that CJ is much more important to our offense than MJD was to the Jags back then (why do you think he isn’t returning kicks now that Fred Taylor is gone), Reggie Bush was/is to the Saints offense and even DeSean Jackson to the Eagles.

true true....
and come on ppl, put cj as KR/PR??? idiotic, the possibilities are much higher of getting injured. as a returner your sitting there waiting for the ball to reach you while the gunners are on a full head of steam to knock the s**t out of someone. one good play on one good day for a gunner going full blast and isnt completely picked up by a blocker…can you say season ending injury/concussion. something id like to keep CJ far away from as possible.

The logic that he has more risk of injury on a kick return than as a running back doesn’t make sense.

are in the game more against defenses still looking to pop someone, with that already going on and the risk already there, why add to that by putting him back to return?

Can you prove to me that one to two more touches at kick return a game hurts him? If so, he’s too fragile anyways.
I don’t really see what’s so scary about CJ returning a few kicks in spot situations. We’re 0-3!

I can prove it
There is not another top 5 RB in the league that also returns kicks- this is the point that we have been trying to make for you for the past several posts.
This should tell you something: if it doesn’t, there is no reason we should be having this conversation, as you are the smartest coach in the NFL and should quit your day job and start your own franchise.

TNTitans - Obviously you aren't reading my posts
I’m not advocating CJ to be the sole kick returner. This seems to be your arguing position.
What I’m advocating is that there are times that it would be a favorable matchup to put him back there.
Chris Johnson is THE FASTEST PLAYER in the NFL. He is also our best weapon in open space.
If Mark Jones sux it up during the first 3 quarters against Jax, and we’re down needing a big play, it’s worth the risk to let CJ return a kickoff or two.
Put this in the context that we’re 0-3! If we lose this, we’re down two games in the division and out of contention.

We put Pacman out there didn't we?
Why did we do that? Because he was the most elusive player we had. He also started on defense.
I didn’t hear anyone say “Don’t put Pacman out there for kick returns, he might get hurt”.
I will concede that CJ isn’t the answer for every kick off return. But, there maybe times in the game, it could be appropriate.

Pacman wasn’t a tenth as important to the team as CJ is
At the time, Pacman was our most explosive player and he was our first round pick.
It’s easy to try and make the statement that CJ is more important, but you can’t do it because you’re only looking in hind sight.

I put CJ in at kick off return if I feel we need a big play
I understand the point about not making him the starter on kick off returns, although I see no proof it’s anymore dangerous than catching a screen in the flat, however, you have to keep all options on the table.
The NFL is about matchups. Coaches plan all week to put there players in the best chances to make plays.
If Mark Jones fumbles the opening kick off and basically does nothing the first three quarters, you mean to tell me you wouldn’t want CJ taking the kick with the game on the line?
If we were 3-0, I might let it pass. But, when you’re 0-3 and one more loss could be the nail in the coffin, I think the benefit of an explosive player in a matchup that gives him superior advantage, is a risk I’ll take.
WE CANT PLAY IT SAFE> THIS IS AN EMERGENCY SITUATION>

You make an interesting point... Special teams will be important
I would think CJ takes the ST work and your newly resigned Mark Jones patches up your depleted secondary. You need to give your Superstar as many touches as you can against a Jags team that that has morale in it favor and force a suspect Jags ST to account for him. Keep in mind that Spoonie is back for the Jags so KO coverage will be important.
