Tennessee Titans Morning Links: Still Perfect At Losing Edition
The Titans franchise has long been criticized for playing an out-dated style of football; a brand of play that was more suited to the mid-seventies than the new millennium. Well, you can kiss that stodgy image good-bye, because few franchise have been as innovative and groundbreaking in finding new ways to kick themselves in the balls as we have the past two weeks.
Bulluck is right, now is time to panic. Remember: it's completely ok to yell 'Fire!' in a crowded theater if the damn thing is burning down... or even if your team is 0-3 and really the fire is just someone with one of those silly i-Phone apps that makes the screen look like a cigarette lighter.
For the best coverage of yesterday's debacle, make sure you listen to Jimmy and I discuss it all in last night's podcast. We even address the Vince Young talk in a completely non-dismissive fashion!!!111!!!1.
Follow us through the jump to hear people take blame for mistakes that still piss you off...
In what will surely become the running theme for this week, Kerry Collins mans-up and takes much of the blame for that terrible game. As does Ryan Mouton. Expect to see a lot of this kind of stuff this week.
Expect news on the injuries to Vincent Fuller and Cortland Finnegan later today after they have MRIs, etc. If that news isn't good news on both fronts then we're even more effed in the a than the average 0-3 team.
I pretty much agree with Wyatt's grades here, including the two Fs:
SPECIAL TEAMS: F
Rookie return man Ryan Mouton had a miserable game. He fumbled a kickoff and a punt, setting up two New York touchdowns. The gift-wrapped 14 points changed the game. In the fourth quarter, the Titans gave up a 37-yard punt return by Jim Leonhard. Kicker Rob Bironas made a 38-yard field goal after missing practice time Friday with an ankle injury.
COACHING: F
Coach Jeff Fisher greatly overestimated his personnel in the return game heading into the season. It bit him and his team in the butt on Sunday. Mouton’s faux pas ultimately cost the Titans the game, but the rookie shouldn’t have been in that position. Fisher has to find someone who can do the job, but faces an even bigger task in making sure his team doesn’t completely unravel after a 0-3 start.
What am I doing today to stop from completely freaking out? Going back and reading every story like this one I can get my browser to load about how this wasn't really a must win game for us. Well, that and listening to the saddest blues songs ever recorded.
If there's one thing I learned from watching ER back in the day, it's the meaning of the phrase 'call it'. I don't know if I'm with the Posse yet, but I can feel the terror as well.

That's right.
When I threw my beer at the TV, it went right through the screen, whacked Finny in the ankle, and now he’s screwed. It’s my fault.
If I could only field punts, I could be a Titan.

One more reason why letting Chris Carr was a stupid-ass mistake.
BTW, how far under the Salary Cap are we? You’re telling me we couldn’t have thrown some money at the guy, ‘cause that ain’t true!

Carr left because he wanted a chance to start
not because of money. we had two established starters (at the time), and the Ravens had just cut both of their starting CBs.

Honestly...
I still believe that there is probably the actual Salary Cap, and then Fisher’s REAL salary cap (as in, what the FO is going to let them spend in this economy, plus Bud’s natural penny-pinching).
It would not surprise me if we learn in the near future that Fisher had “not one dollar more” orders thrust upon him a couple of months ago………
Would not surprise me at all.

I was in the middle of creating a fanpost suggesting something similar. That maybe our new GM wouldn’t spend to get a returner. Which could be why Fish is having to stick with rookies.

i have a much longer response
coming soon. but the short answer is no.
collins’ INT% is over twice as high as last season through the first 3 games— big problem.
VY’s career INT% is still higher than what collins is doing so far this year— not a solution.
this is how i view our season thus far:
Pittsburgh: special teams and awful defensive play calling late killed us
Houston: passing defense killed us
New York: Special teams killed us and the passing game (kerry, the wr’s, and the pass protection scheme all together, not just kerry.) sealed the coffin.
unless we are giving up on the season, the only reason you change qbs now is if kerry is clearly the reason we are losing games and the bottom line is he isn’t. given what we know about vince thus far in his career and what we know about fisher’s refusal to try anything that looks like a wildcat, unless he can field punts, rush the passer or cover WRs downfield he is of no use to the Titans. once the season is mathematically lost, and it is not yet, then you can start playing the “look to the future” card, but no sooner.

And regardless of what all you people who are just signing up to post "START VY!!!!!!!!!!111111!!!!!!!!!!111111" say
What hal just posted is what the team is going to do.
So if that means you can’t be a fan as long as Collins is playing, or if you “pray for this team to lose when Collins is playing” (you know who you are douchebag), then maybe you can go be a Colt fan. They could use some more bandwagoners.

I agree with Hal completely
which reminds me of something I brought up to my brother at the end of the game.
Do we not have any pass playcalls or audibles for when the blitz is coming? It seemed that late in the game when Ryan dialed up the all out blitz, Kerry Collins ran straight backwards and all our receivers were running slow developing, long routes and were not getting any separation, and Collins would just loft it into no mans land. Why were there no hot routes or safety valves late in the game against a team that we knew would dial up some all out blitzes? Why not run CJ into the flat? It’s not like he was helping in picking up those blitzers. I don’t get it.

We'll see what happens.
But, Fisher has already met his criteria for benching Kerry:
“As long as we’re winning, Kerry [Collins] is our quarterback,” he said.
Pressed for more, he offered this:
“We’re going to get Vince back and get his knee back and work with him getting back involved in the offense, but Kerry’s going to go ahead and play for us until he struggles or whatever else happens. You saw by the way he played and just in light of everything, it just makes sense to go with this.”
by SuperHorn on Sep 28, 2009 10:49 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
what fisher says to the media
has no bearing on what he is really thinking, esp. when it comes to not throwing guys under the bus. anyone who knows fisher knows this.
secondly, a year old article that came before we went 13-3 behind collins is way too old to be relevant. if there were any questions in his mind as to who the best qb for the team is, you would have seen some sort of competition this summer. didn’t happen.

…as I recall EVEN then it was orders from “on high” that got Vince his first start. If you think there is ANY scenario in which Jeff Fisher is willingly going to start Vince Young of his own accord — well — let’s just say I think you’re dreaming.

I'm going to respectfully disagree with you here, hal.
And for a reason that I think is one of the fundamental differences between Vince Young supporters and non-supporters. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect an improvement in Vince’s numbers from his 2007 year.
You point to Vince’s career INT percentage, which is dragged way down by his poor play in his second year. But, it’s also important to remember that Vince’s INT , 3.6, in his rookie year is lower than Kerry’s this year (3.8%). Kerry’s quarterback rating is nearly identical to Vince’s career passer rating, and is actually lower than Vince’s in 2007.
I wouldn’t call for Vince unless I thought he gave us a better shot to win. I didn’t last year. And, I didn’t to begin the season. But, you’re wrong when you say Kerry isn’t losing us games. He was clearly part of the problem two games in a row.
Kerry doesn’t have it in him to put this team on his back and win. He’s turned the ball over with the game on the line in back to back games. I don’t know where Vince is mentally now, but I’ve seen him carry a worse team before.
We know what we have with Kerry. But, we don’t really know what we have with Vince. I just can’t imagine it can be any worse.

To piggyback on Hal's point
It may not be unreasonable to expect improvement from Vince, but it isn’t unreasonable to expect him not to improve either. Most quarterbacks who pan out make drastic steps forward in their 2nd year as a NFL QB (see Ryan, Matt and Flacco, Joe). Top that with his inconsistent preseason this year that included a few really boneheaded decisions, and it is not unreasonable to think VY wouldn’t be improved at all, which is the conclusion I come to.

Fair point.
It’s obviously subjective. I just have a hard time believing he can be worse than Kerry. He’s going to make his “boneheaded” plays…Kerry is too, though. That’s the problem. The thing with Vince, is that on some level there is a trade off between boneheaded plays, and highlight reel plays. With Kerry, there isn’t.
by SuperHorn on Sep 28, 2009 11:26 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
kerry's.....
stinking the place up with his decision making and making dumb*ss INT’s that should have never been thrown. put in VY NOBODY, no matter who they think they are can say for sure how Vince will be when he comes back, NOBODY. there is no ability to make something out of nothing with KC, at least with VY that broken play has a chance to be made into something. and in KC’s case, making something out of nothing is throwing the ball behind both teams benches.

DIVSION?! dont talk about DIVISION!!!??!
we need to go 10-3 to have a shot at the wild card and more realistically 11-2 because a tie probably will not get us in at this point. unless peyton goes down the colts are winning the division.
in the WC, 2nd tie break after head to head is conference record, and we already have 3 losses in conference with 4 divisional games, Buffalo, Miami, SD and at NE to go. if we end up tied with either NYJ or PITT we already lose those tie breakers. we really need to beat the pats to at least set up one advantageous tie break should we get that far.

That's basically my point.
In the preseason, there was talk that maybe there was a shift in the division. Or, the Colts would suffer because of the loss of Tony Dungy. But, it’s evident that the Colts aren’t going to have that down year. Actually, after looking at their schedule and watching Peyton play last night, they look like 3-4 loss team MAX.
Basically, unless something changes, we’re f’d. At this point, heads need to roll.

After getting up in the middle of the damn night...
and spending eight hours in a tractor to get the rest of my hay hauled off my fields this is not how I saw my morning ending. So on with my ranting and thoughts for what it’s worth.
Mouton should not even be allowed to watch the return game from the sideline much less be out there fielding punts. At least he looks pretty good in coverage and that is something to get excited about.
Defense looked better than last week if not for turnovers (mouton) they would not have had their backs against the wall for what seemed like forever.
I know there are VY lovers and haters on this site. I am kind of nuetral. I would like to think that he will become our starter and produce good numbers one day, with all that we have invested in him. I just dont think that day is today. I know Kerry has sucked in the second half of games this year. I just look back to the first half of this game and remember him throwing passes into extremly tight coverage for completions. Hell even the announcers on the TV were impressed. Then I ask myself could VY throw that same pass. From all of his past performances I have to say no. With that being said I would have to say that if another week or two goes by with the same old stuff happening than we better make a change. I do agree that we need to find out what we have in VY so we no where we are for next year if this season turns out to be a total loss.

I can feel that....
My sentiments exactly. Let’s see what happens. People tend to write off players too soon. Remember what happened to Randall Cunningham? The Eagles cut him loose and he bounced back with the Vikes and was a Field Goal away from the Super Bowl. We don’t want to see that happen with Vince. Let’s be sure if he is a boom or a bust. But if you win Offensive Rookie of the Year, go to the Pro Bowl, and grace the cover of Madden 08. He has it, let’s pray he finds it again.

But just in case let me make my point. I have never and will never pray for the Titans to lose. Nor am I the one bitching about not playing a specific player. My thoughts are near what Hal mentioned earlier. I think we give Kerry the nod the next week or two. If we do not right the ship than we should play VY. I just think if we get to that point and wind up playing him than we need to figure out what we have with him. Is he truly the future or do we need to look elsewhere in the draft.

I sure hope our returner just lets the ball fly into the endzone for the touchback. I know you can’t do that on every kick/punt . I would rather give up 20 yards in return than a turnover. Collins had better get his act together this week or he will be benched.

Somethin' New, Maybe?
A switch in strategy is a must. Defenses are keying on CJ now. The Titans need to put LenDale more in the mix to soften up the defenses, wear them down a little bit. A switch a quarterback would be nice also. Givin’ Edison a little bit more playing time would help, since he does have a little speed. Fisher needs to get of his high horse and start using the Wildcat a little to keep defenses off balance.

I was traveling yesterday, so I watched most of the second half in the airport.
I’ve been a staunch fan for this past decade, almost a poster child for the “displaced fan”. I’ve gone to incredible lengths to watch or listen to the games. But this is killing me. When I got on the plane, we were down by a touchdown and there was at least 6 minutes left in the game. I KNEW we weren’t going to win. I haven’t thought that way since the Music City Miracle. I always thought that if there was time on the clock, we could win.
KC might be better than VY, but I’m not against the idea of playing Vince. Unlike McNair, Manning, Bledsoe, Favre or Brady, when we are down and time is running out, I don’t trust Collins to put the team on his back and win the game. Vince has done that before. I say give him a chance.

You're right about that
Vince does know how to close a deal. Make SOMETHING happen at least. We have too many weapons to be 0-3. I think we try to overuse CJ. Try wearing down a defense with LenDale for a while. THEN hit ‘em with CJ. They’d be to sore to catch him.

KC might be better....
ehhhhh, i dont see to much into that logic, nothing personal. although KC is relatively better as a passer, as an overall athlete KC will never come close to VY and thats what we need. defenses are getting younger and better as time passes, not something that can be said for KC. and to go back to the passer situation, idiotic ppl tend to view the players in parallel according to KC’s entire career to VY’s short one to make themselves seem right, well in using that way of thinking KC’s compl rate is 55% and VY’s is 57%. now im not ever really a big stat finder, but in the light of things i felt i should find that one.
