Officials Worry NY Terror Plot 'Still Alive' as Case Broadens

This is not a very cool time for our boys to be traveling to NY.  I have been following this since it broke and its really looking pretty ugly.

From ABC news.

Law enforcement officials say the alleged terror plot against New York City may be "still alive" despite the arrest of its alleged ringleader, 24-year-old Najibullah Zazi of Denver, Colorado.

"I have never been so worried," said one senior law enforcement official with more than a dozen years of experience in counter-terrorism investigations.

In Washington, the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security issued a bulletin to law enforcement authorities urging vigilance at so-called "soft targets" including sports stadiums and luxury hotels.

ABCNews.com reported Monday that Zazi's computer contained information relating to New York area baseball and football stadiums and a video of Grand Central Terminal in New York.

There is nothing to worry about. Unfortunately this is part of life in NY now, but this situation is no more of a threat to us than any of the other wanna be terrorists that have popped up since 9/11

Most "wanna be" terrorist dont go to Peshware for a bomb making class with 4 buddies.

then return to act on their training. I am not saying that the sky is falling. I do have a healthy respect for the bugger eaters that I work around every day. FBI and NYPD are jumping through hoops right now trying to find the explosives while maintaining survailance on 20+ others BGs that they know of. Remember, we have to be right 100% of the time, they only gotta be right once. To ignore this which has direct links to OBL and AQ is like a sheep going BAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.

lol

They’re not scaring me out of my lower level 40 yard line seats. Silly terrorists, threats are for kids.

still we need to take precausions

because terrorists may seem like kids play but they can be very dangerous Remember 9-11?

i heard that Ray Lewis rounded up 8 Taliban this week bringing his total to 56. he’s in NY right now protecting the civilians until game time sunday.

seriously, at least in B-more, a “terrorist” would stick out like a friggin billboard within a mile of the stadium. interesting, after going to a thousand games you get a feel for who goes to football games. i can pick a first timer out a mile away.

by raven on Sep 24, 2009 8:39 PM CDT reply actions

what precautions do you suggest?

Theres nothing you can do but live your life normally and do good whenever you’re able to. Obviously if you get a threat you do what you can and report it, but the second you start being afraid of threats you can’t control, and change your life, then the terrorists win.

As William Wallace so eloquently put it:
THEY MAY TAKE OUR LIVES, BUT THEY’LL NEVER TAKE OUR FREEDOM!!

A stadium would be a difficult target...

…for a terrorist group to hit.

Security is tight. LOTS of undercover work goes on at games in addition to the uniformed individuals, stadium security and cameras + detection equipment.

The biggest hurdle is you are surrounded by 75,000 drunk, raving football fans whose reaction is difficult to predict given the circumstances.

The attraction though is that you don’t need a heavy weapon or large amount of explosives to inflict an inordinate number of casualties and psychological trauma.

The inital attack would likely need to be limited due to the constraints of getting ordinance into the facility and would simply be the catalyst for the real intention which would be the secondary effect of the panic and the stampede of the crowd as they try and flee the stadium.

The role of law enforcement in maintaining order would be paramount to minimizing the intended consequences.

The more insidious plan would be a biological or chemical attack designed to use the mass concentration of people for impact or as vectors for a bioweapon.

This is unlikely though, as historically, although we make a big deal of the potential of these attacks, terrorists group have failed to use these weapons in an effective manner (Tokyo subway attacks for example) and lack the sophistication to effectively maintain, deliver and disperse these weapons in sufficient quantity or lethality.

Not that they couldn’t pull it off, but they are unlikely to try given the short history of failed attempts due to technical issues, primarily. Until they feel confident that they have oversome the technical hurdles, they will likely stick to shock value, conventional methods.

Subway attack? Sure, that’s doable.

Stadium? High value but High possibility of failure.

In short? Drive to the game!

the dallas guy was baited

That guy was arrested for driving without a license and then’bailed out’. subsequently they got him to detonate a fake bomb. if this does not smell duress or undue influence then what will. i wonder where the new york guy got the stolen credit card from to go shopping for peroxides? probably they was something they had on this guy. with the patriot act coming for renewal these things appear triggered.

My intent in posting that

Was not to say “Dont go to the game” of any other doom and gloom. Some of the people here on MCM know that I am typing this from the other side of the globe. I have spent the last 5 years dealing with not so nice folks and suicide vest bombs and car bombs are a fact of life here.

TexansForever- Your about 80% right but the 20% that you are wrong is what will bite you in the ass.

Guys just be vigilant if you are at the game. If you see something odd bring it up to security. I would be aware of overly bulky clothing, people looking nervous or acting like their heads are on a ratchet, prayer beads, and back packs that dont belong. Dont assume that because they do not have a “Middle Eastern appearance” that they are not a bad guy. Google pics of the cell that was busted in NC this summer. White, Black, Brown or Yellow, if some one looks fishy, find a cop.

With out getting into enemy tactics here, For gods sake if something does happen, STAY WHERE YOU ARE AT. Do not try and run out the gate. Just because there is a boom dont mean that there is not an even bigger one or two waiting right outside a choke point like a screening area or gate.

Not trying to turn this into a Cpt. Tactical post, just want y’all to be aware of the possible threat and exorcise due vigilance.

thanks for the tips Oden1!

based from your tips we should report Rex Ryan (overly bulky body) and Mark Sanchez (people looking nervous). :-p

Not disagreeing with anyone you said there...

…I spent 8 years doing the same things. Remember tactics change for our fanatical friends once they come to this side of the pond. What works in the sandbox doesn’t alwys translate here.

5 years with Army Intel as an Arabic Linguist and 3 years with the Defense Intelligence Agency and the National Intelligence Suportt Activity as a Human Intellligence Targeting Officer / Liason to the JTTF’s here Stateside doing domestic stuff.

So Kudos to you brother! Stay safe and god be with you!

Hope you get back soon!

ROFL...

Did you use an arabic translator online for that?

Hahaha.

The word it used for fan, “marooha”, is actually a “Fan” as in ceiling fan.

And where I think you were trying to say “Speaks” it used “Yetehadith”, which is really more like a speech, or an occurence. That one is more problematic.

Good stuff though.
