Breaking News: David Givens Sues the Titans for $25 million
Nashville's Channel 5 just reported that David Givens is suing the Titans for $25 million.
The suit apparently alleges that the Titans knew about the problems with his knee before he blew it out; that preventative surgery would have fixed the problem; that the team did not inform him of the problem; and that the knee injury ended his career.
If true, this is major news.

I call BS on this
That doen’t seem like the type of thing Fisher would do, I think that it will come out that he knew about this to some extent or that second and third opinions were given that did not have the same diagnosis.

Likely that Givens knew this and the Patriots as well
It is probable that Givens knew that he had a bad knee whilst he was still with the Patriots. So the issue might not even be a titans issue at all.

there's really no way to tell
if there is anything to this or not. just going to have to wait and see how this turns out. i would hate to think our staff would knowingly do what givens and his lawyer are claiming.

I call double BS on this
This guy was a bust and a total waste of money! 24 million dollars over 5 years. He was ineffective and through first 10 weeks had 8 catches for 108 yds in 06’ Hurt all of 07’. Waste of a roster spot end of story. “46”

Not calling BS
How good Givens was is completely immaterial. There is a huge possibility for conflict of interest for NFL salaried team doctors, and that’s exactly who the Dr. Byrd referenced in this article is. He’s the TItans team physician, payed by the franchise. There have been plenty of lawsuits already, many of them successful, over various issues related to this conflict. For decades. If Givens wins suit, I wouldn’t necessarily think of it as an personal indictment of Fisher’s or Reese’s morals. It has to do with NFL league policy regarding what team doctors can and can’t do; what information they are obligated to share with players and how they are obligated to share it.

Couldn’t agree more. It’s a league wide issue.

Has anyone ever tried something like this before?
I agree that this opens up lots of possibilities for other players and creates a headache I’m sure the league doesn’t want

So they were trying to hold him out of the 2006 season opener against the Jets with a hamstring injury...
all-the-while knowing he had a major knee injury? That doesnt make sense at all for the the Titans to do something like that. When they made the move to bring him in, I myself(honest to God), was wondering if something were wrong with him because the Patriots showed no interest in re-signing him. Anyone find it odd that not only Givens but Deion Branch also had a knee injury the year after leaving New England? Whatever the case, I guess it will all come out soon enough.

David Givens
It just proves that Patriots players, coaches, and other staff members are OVERRATED! Free Agents don’t do anything for their new teams, former coordinators and coaches can’t win with their new teams (College AND Pro), and most people don’t realize they can’t draft well either. Most of their draft picks get cut or play on the pratice squads. The media needs to stop praising Darth Sidious and Darth Vader (Bellichek and Brady) and the Evil Empire. It’s easy to win with vets, but try getting a rookies to pick up your system and try to develop them into potential Hall of Fame Inductees

this has nothing to do with any of that
a promising 26 year old’s knee fell to pieces and he feels like the Titans could have acted to prevent it from ever happening by notifying him of a more serious condition.

It seems highly unlikely that the Titans would have acted this way.
Obviously, the team lost HUGE on its investment in him. However, preventative surgery might have helped salvage some of the investment, and I dare say that’s the business decision that the team would have made.
From Givens’ perspective, it probably makes sense to try to sue and force some sort of settlement, but this is a difficult chain of logic for me to believe in.

My question is
if the Titans knew before they signed Givens that he had a left knee that was a time-bomb, why did they give him so much money, including guaranteed bonuses? Given was already a stretch to make no. 1 money, so it’s a confusing accusation…

You think he'd accept it in the form of VY's remaining contract?

why is the front office so quiet
There must have been previous correspondence on this issue. Why will the titans not say something, rather than go after the reporters. this has an eerie feeling. If they are not going to able to prove that they showed him the report then they need to amend how they do business. make sure they get proof of receipt on everything dealing with players,
