Tennessee Titans Morning Links: Big Potential Creates Big Expectations Edition

Tennessee_titans_30x21 The Tennessean has a feature on Jared Cook, and the comparisons are getting pretty lofty for the third round pick who hasn't even suited up in a regular season game:

When you visualize Cook, think of Lions receiver Calvin Johnson, but bigger at 246 pounds...

Think of Tony Gonzalez, the All-Pro tight end, but when he was younger and faster.

Think of Antonio Gates with longer reach at 6-foot-5 and a 35¾-inch wingspan that rivals a Kansas scarecrow. Or Vernon Davis, and replace the attitude.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Bo's injury is going to keep him day-to-day, but the MRI results were encouraging... he's still pretty steamed over the hit James Harrison put on him even after Fisher proclaimed it legal.  This same link also has Fisher saying that they won't be signing anyone and like the roster they have now.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 This weekend was not a kind one to the AFC South, as only the Colts were able to escape with a win, and they looked like dog crap in the process.

Follow us through the jump to see a pretty funny one finger salute on national TV...

Star-divide

Tennessee_titans_30x21 even when getting routed, Texans fans always keep it classy.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Calvin Watkins at the AOL Fanhouse says last Thursday's loss was all about missed chances...

Tennessee_titans_30x21 but the thing that's sticking with most of us are the little mistakes that came at a huge price.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Apparently, Chris Johnson is a praying machine before games.

The only really bad thing is that the Titans have to now...

…make up a game on the Colts, and that could be hard to do given the non-conference schedule. I don’t know that I believe the Dolphins can really help us here, although I suppose if the Colts’ Run-D doesn’t put something together, there’s always a chance. After all, I gave the Jags NO CHANCE AT ALL against the Colts. I think the Fins are a bit better than that.

BTW, if you guys didn’t pay any attention to the Giants vs. Skins game, it was pretty good one. Similar to the Titans/Steelers, really, in that the Gianst were the MUCH better team in the first half but couldn’t put the points on the board to reflect it. However, they did great work vs. Haynesworth and really wore him down.

Second half, however, was a different story. Big Al had a MUCH better second half, almost single-handedly stopping the Giants’ running attack in its tracks. Really, if the Skins had a better Offense, they’d have been able to win that game.

The hell

our team took the stacked defending world champs into overtime in their house on a massively televised game. The Texans got thrashed at home against a rookie QB and first-time head coach.

OK let's not do this

I don’t want this blog turning into the Tennessean’s comment section. Both teams are 0-1, and one of them will be 0-2 Sunday night. No news in the fact that we think that will be the Texans, and you think it will be the Titans. Let’s get back to the on the field discussion.

after...

watching the texans game, unless there are some drastic changes made, they are not going to be ready for our front four and blitz packages. and sad to say although slaton is quick he does not possess the power running to get through our line. Chris brown on the other is a different story, and i wouldnt be surprised to see CB line up in the backfied given the magnitued of this matchup.

it'll probably....

be in this game too, he’ll want to prove something, and that’s not a good thing to try and do against our defense, especially when we know his tendencies as a runner.

couple things

i think the jets defense is going to be in the top tier of elite defenses this season. it would be unwise to underestimate the texans based upon the goose egg the jets fed them. andre johnson is still alive, and if schaub gets time, you can’t cover him for long.
the jets being an under dog was foolish in the first place. if rex ryan is there, and they have pro bowl talent at every level of the defense, it’s going to be a good defense.

if we have nate and cook back at full speed, the offense should look A LOT better this week (though 300+ yards on pittsburgh ain’t bad). it’s easy to feel bad about 10 points, especially when you leave 6 on the board, but the steelers are the steelers and many teams will look a lot worse against that defense this season than the titans did on thursday. if bo is still gimpy, i hope they won’t hesitate to rest him and throw cook into the fire. alge and stevens can handle the blocking fine. i can’t wait to see what this kid looks like in a real game against 1st teamers.

If we still think a 4 man pass rush is the way to go

We’ll be staring 0-2 in the face. granted, the giants won the superbowl 2 yrs ago starting off 0-2, so it’s not panic time yet. But seriously, Cecil was on the sideline in our Baltimore loss-so there’s really no excuse as to why he allowed essentially the same thing to happen vs shittsburgh. Doesn’t matter who the qb is- u can’t give him more than 10 seconds to find a WR.

by Dirty South Swag on Sep 14, 2009 9:59 AM CDT via mobile reply actions

Titans vs Texans

in my opinion, if we can hold White and Johnson, we will be fine. the biggest matchups, in my opinion, break down like this:
*AJ vs you guy’s corner
*O-Line vs D-Line (ours)
*D-Line vs O-Line (yours)
if we can get pressure on Collins, should give the secondary some help, which looked suspect this week.

Some stats from the Jets side

190 yds rushing
Jones avg 5.3 yac
10-18 3rd down conversion

3rd downs....

are like 3 pointers. absolute back breakers. jones got the majority of his yards on one play, we actually played him pretty well up to that point. not being able to generate pressure on 3rd is why we lost this game. that, and the fact that “ben taub” shaub was like a big ass white bullseye with a target on his back. and watching Kris Jenkins bitch slap Chris Myers was worst than watching a nashville hillbilly wedding.

Even if you get alot of pressure on Collins

Did you see how well he maneuvered during the Steelers game? I think he will be excellent at avoiding it.

Book it. Nobody protects the QB better, and Roos has had his way with Mario on every occasion so far (and even more so with Kerry back there)…

well we will see.

i hoped for the best, but im a realist. last year against the Ravens, we looked like shit, confused, retarded. so i was hoping that since the personnel was dif, we would have a dif result. what concerns me is that if we dont match up well against the Jets’ 3-4, we can never beat the Steelers. and in order to get out of the AFC, you HAVE to expect that all roads lead thru Pittsburg.

If they couldn't stop the Jets running attack with a Rookie QB...

…it is a real stretch to think they will stop the Titans running attack with a more-experienced QB.

Prediction: Lopsided Time-of-Possession will kill the Texans.

I know this is ancient, ancient news and completely unrelated.

But does anyone have an info on what Volek did to piss off Coach Fish back in the day? I was just curious about this the other day and figured someone here would know something more about it.

by Titan9 on Sep 14, 2009 10:28 AM CDT reply actions

Nothing official

Fisher only said that Volek had lied to the team. However, on a talk radio show about a year ago I heard a fairly reputable local media member saying that Volek had requested and been given a weekend off during offseason for “family matters” and they found out later he’d gone on a fishing trip. I just remember hearing that, I have no idea if it is correct.

by numbertenox on Sep 14, 2009 12:53 PM CDT up reply actions

whatever happened

that’s one of the most underrated story lines in titans history. had volek not done whatever he did, he very well might be our starter right now.
brief recap here

highlights:
volek had more passing yards in his first 7 starts than john elway and steve young COMBINED.

fourth QB ever (marino, simms, fouts, matt cassel became #5 last season w/ consecutive 400 yard games)

7 other qbs have two games with 426 or more yards and four or more touchdowns on their NFL resume: Marino, Montana, Randall Cunningham, Tommy Kramer, Ken O’Brien, Dan Fouts and Peyton Manning. Volek did it twice in the span of 8 days.

Thanks guys for the info.

So I guess my next question would be, if Volek’s so good why isn’t he someone’s starter instead of warming the Charger’s bench? I mean I can name 10 teams of the top of my head that have questionable QB’s.

by Titan9 on Sep 14, 2009 3:10 PM CDT up reply actions

no idea

but possibly he has a rep. He really flashed in a few of those games with the Titans, and he and Drew Bennett seemed to be some kind of psychic twins.

Who knows. One thing I’ve learned in my dayjob over the years is that personality is just as important as talent when you are talking about a job that involves working with a team. Take the most talented guy/gal in the field, whatever the field is, and being an ass will still bring that person failure in a team environment. If people don’t like working with you, they won’t.

by numbertenox on Sep 14, 2009 5:13 PM CDT up reply actions

There was also talk that

Volek was acting like he deserved to be given the starting spot outright, and when we started looking at Kerry, Billy demanded a trade. He denied it publicly, but was subsequently traded…
