Pittsburgh Steelers 13 Tennessee Titans 10: A Look at the Plays

Lots of cushion to receivers=lots of big numbers on passing plays.

Star-divide

Here is how the teams broke down by play call and down:

Titans

1st Down

  • Rush- 15 plays 4.2 yards per play
  • Pass- 10 plays 5.6 yards per play
2nd Down
  • Rush- 7 plays 3.71 yards per play
  • Pass- 15 plays 8.8 yards per play
3rd Down
  • Rush- 3 plays -1.33 yards per play
  • Pass- 10 plays 3.3 yards per play
1st Down
  • Rush- 9 plays 2.11 yards per play
  • Pass- 24 plays 6.88 yards per play
2nd Down
  • Rush- 12 plays 0.92 yards per play
  • Pass- 16 plays 9.5 yards per play
3rd Down
  • Rush- 2 plays 0 yards per play
  • Pass- 12 plays 1.42 yards per play

A couple of things jump out here:

  1. We should have run the ball more.
  2. It is going to be really tough to win a game where you give up 7 yards per passing play on first down and 10 yards per passing play on second down.

Those numbers are telling and surprise me

But what is amazing is despite those gaudy passing numbers, we lost because of our own mistakes and still help Pitt to 10 points in regulation.

BTW, did anyone else notice that LenDale was the better...

running back last night. He was money all night long up the middle. I couldn’t believe they went away from that except that Dave Stewart kept getting stupid Illegal Formation penalties that then made it 3rd-and-9.

those formation penalties were craziness

Stewart lined-up exactly where every other tackle in the league lines up in the Shotgun formation. Even Wycheck was laughing at those this morning, and he’s very fair on refs.

yeah

that sucked, because one of them cost us on that pass interference call.

by jayosanne on Sep 11, 2009 4:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Uh-huh...

…because that wasn’t the most bogus interference call I’ve seen in a long time. Polamalu got run over after he established his position on the field AND turned to look for the ball. You got LUCKY for getting such a bogus interference call to offset an obvious hold.

by invertedmind on Sep 12, 2009 10:35 AM CDT up reply actions

Nooooo...

He lined up with both feet off the line. It’s not that he was turned sideways — they all do THAT on shotgun snaps. But they also are careful to put at least one foot on the line. Stewart, however, just looked like a hairy-backed Nancy the play before and was trying to gain an advantage by lining up further back.

And if you want to see how LUCKY you got not have about 10 holding calls on your left tackle, watch the game again and see how many times James Harrison gets held on every play. One that still sticks out in my mind two days later is one where he got completely by the LT so the tackle wrapped his arm around his neck. And it didn’t get called.

by invertedmind on Sep 12, 2009 10:42 AM CDT up reply actions

Hey there genius

It doesn’t matter where the Olinemen’s feet are. That’s not what determines if they are on the line of scrimmage. So since you don’t know what a player needs to do to be on the line of scrimmage, we are not going to take your evaluation of the “missed” holding calls. Dumbass.

And you need to watch the game again and see how many Titan players James Harrison cheap shots. One that still sticks out in my mind two days later is the one where he put his helmet on the kneecaps of our tight end that was owning your defense.

Fun game to watch, despite the loss. It seems like a looooooong time until

we play again. The defense will rise to the occassion and Cecil will call a better game. He HAS to. I cannot wait to wipe the bad memories from this game out of my head.

Two-minute Drive

I was surprised that after completing that first pass before the two-minute warning (4th quarter) that they didn’t run the ball to chew some clock. The Steelers were sure to blitz, so it would have been a great time for draw, a screen, or a swing pass. I was really disappointed that they didn’t try to get CJ involved more with swing passes.

Having to defending against the Steelers two-minute drill and then take the field again to start overtime was too much to ask.

by T Coleman on Sep 11, 2009 4:46 PM CDT reply actions

yeah

we through one swing pass to CJ that got 11 yards and he made someone completely whiff on the tackle. We really should have tried to get him the ball in space more often

The Good, The Bad...The Ugly.

Just noticed he already made one. But I’ll continue to do my weekly post. Unless you want me to submit it to you each week and you put it up.

The Good.
Many people said Kerry Collins wouldn’t be as good as last year, but he is proving them wrong. Kerry Collins finished 22/35 for 244 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT.

Justin Gage has developed into a great receiver for this team. He caught 7 passes for 78 yards with 1 TD.

Kenny Britt had a big night for his NFL debut. 4 catches for 85 yards with his longest being 57 yards that set up the TD in the 2nd.

The running game was good, but not great. Chris Johnson had 15 carries for 57 yards with Lendale having 8 for 28.

Our run defense. Even though the Steelers running back aren’t that great, it’s always nice to hold a team to 38 yards rushing.

We sacked Big Ben 4 times and forced him into throwing two interceptions.

We racked up 320 yards on the number one defense.

The Bad.
We didn’t win.

Collins interception. I would’ve liked to see Britt try and fight for the ball, or knock it down at least.

Scaife’s fumble. It was just a weird play in general.

Field position. We were backed up at our goal line the entire game.

The Ugly.
One missed field goal and another blocked. Come on!

David Stewart. What the hell man?! Every time we got a 1st down, it was called back because of a penalty by him.

The defensive play calling. I was one of the guys who thought Cecil would be a huge improvement over Jim. We looked great in the 1st Quarter when the Steelers had -2 yards of offense. But during the two minute warning and the entire 3rd, 4th, and OT we were rushing 3 guys and letting Ben set back in the pocket for a decade to find a receiver. Ben had a career high in passing against us. Which is un-funking acceptable! Cecil needs to get his crap together before he gets run out of town.

Here’s a stat thanks to Paul Kuharsky:
When the Titans added pressure Ben was 6/8 for 43 yards. When the Titans rushed with four, he was 27/35 for 320 yards.

Blown opportunities! Every sports analyst said we would’ve won the game if we didn’t make mistakes.

All in all, this game left a bad taste in my mouth, just like the Ravens game last year.

just between this game and the playoff game

I’m already tired of losing games we SHOULD have won.

seems like a reallly frustrating loss cus we should have won

kind of seems like we picked up where we left off last year with losing a game we should have won.
somebody needs to stop doing something they are doing cus we got some bad karma going on.
the play that sticks out in my mind the most is sending 3 guys and giving rapistberger to much time.
i thought cecil was supposed to be aggresive i did not see it last night.
if anybody was a oilers fan when buddy ryan was running the defence it was a sight to be seen. people comming from every direction pressue non stop. the qbs would throw the ball out of fear to the sidelines just like kerry did last night on one of the finale drives.
ii dont understand why fisher has gotten away from buddy ryans defence hell buddy ryan is the one that brought fisher to the oilers cus they were together in philly.
all in all kerry collins seemed like his passes floated in the air to long. no zip on the ball
if the coaches are going to turn into wussies and not be aggresive and play prevent defence so we dont lose we will lose. you have to play defence to win and thats being aggresive. i give cecil a break cus its his first game but iam no going to give him much more of a break.
sorry for the negativity i saw posatives but the disapointing loss to start the season as we left last year just pisses me off cus i thought we shoud have corrected stupid mistakes so we dont lose games we should have won!!

loss of schwartz > loss of haynesworth

but, it’s cecil’s first dance.

and yeah, i thought kc’s velocity and aim looked pretty good overall. otherwise i concur. i’m over it already. lots of positives this year, sure they will win a lot. how come whenever i respond to you i lose the caps too?

Ryan vs. Gilbride

The time Buddy went over and through a punch at Gilbride was classic…classless, but classic.

by T Coleman on Sep 11, 2009 9:20 PM CDT up reply actions

it felt good man

why buddy went and punched kevin was cus jack pardee was running the run and shoot and buddy was like wtf. its half time you threw a pick 2 mins before halftime and they scored points cus your run and shoot offence. buddy got pissed and went over and punched kevin in the face…. clasic shit goind down on monday night football,
i wish we had that kind of emotion. wish buddy ryan was around or i wish fisher would paly more buddy ryan football on defence. come on man 3 man rushhhh wtf…….i thoguht it was bad with the lhe lions coach with no pressue. this is worse!
buddy had a way with the defensive players that made them want to kill for this man. he motivated them like patton motivated the 3rd army. it was classic it was great. iam not feeling that so jeff. hope your read this, iam not feeling it!!

I disagree with the Collins comment. He was firing bullets last night.

The interception looked bad though, that was a total floater. I completely agree with being more aggressive with the play calling. The fourth quarter was not pretty. The defense just could not get a stop late in the game. I am concerned going into the season with Cecil at the helm. Maybe the Texans game will calm my nerves about that. They seem very beatable, I hope that is the case.

1. Ben is a smart qb
2. Troy left the game early
3. The Pitt. O-line came to play
4. Bullock butchered his assignments on pass coverage
5. Harper played 10 yards off Homes on 3rd and 2.
6. Zone watches the Qb as receivers simply run between front and back of zone to gaps. A caveman could do it.
7. Stewart watched like a hawk by refs. Is he getting a rep?
8. 29 yard punt.
9. Poor spot on key 3rd down run in 4th quarter. Poor holding call on kick off- i believe #59.
10. The absolute worst D for a final drive I have ever seen. If you slow-mo the game not only is Ben relaxing in his own field but the receivers were open by 10 yards (especially Ward) as Titans joined in Hands Across America poses. Red Rover Red Rover send Holmes on over.
11. I’m mad because it reminded me so much of the Raven’s loses where we did the exact same stupid wimpy no balls 4th quarter things.

To Be Honest

Kerry’s not the man! Even Jim Rome said it and I HATE JIM ROME. No sense of the moment. Justin Gage should be in the slot any way. Couple of losses maybe y’all will see things my way!!!!!
