Tennessee Titans Morning Links: Can't Leave Well Enough Alone Edition

Raise your hand if you were also cussing at the screen when this play happened.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Tonight's Dateline on NBC (airing at 9:00 CT) will focus on the murder of Steve McNair (the promo is on the right side of the page).  There's almost no way this ends in a way that adds a damn thing positive to Steve's legacy.  It'd be nice to think they could just leave well enough alone, but that's not the day and age we live in.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 VY is guaranteed the no.2 spot on the depth chart despite generally erratic play in the preseason.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 We all know Mark Jones' debut on Saturday was a major disappointment, but he's guaranteed to have at least the Green Bay game to show some of the skills that we signed him for.

Follow us through the link to find out if VY's fortune spells out Ramsey's doom...

Star-divide

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Fisher sounds like he wants to keep Ramsey around as well, meaning it's yet another position group where we'd have a stretch of personnel.  The 53 man roster cuts are going to be spicy.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Terry McCormick writes about how the Titans are using last season's disappointing end to fuel a more successful run this year.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Paul K has some notes from the game last Saturday including one that I didn't notice on TV:

Cornerback Cortland Finnegan worked on the left instead of his usual spot on the right, getting some work in case the Titans need to shuffle or for an occasion when he might draw a particular receiver and have to follow him over there.

Since Cort is clearly the no.1 CB, it's great to see the team try to get him used to both sides of the field, that way teams can't just shuffle their top WR's positioning to get away from him.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Yahoo! delivers some notes on the AFC South after the next to last preseason contest.

I don't want to wish away the summer, but...

…it can’t come soon enough. Fantastic game on Saturday. I thoroughly enjoyed it, except for Young’s fumble play. After that, I skipped the second half.

The Fumble was enough for me to turn it off

I know it seems the general consensus is “VY played well and I liked how he recovered from his mistakes” But those mistakes are things you can’t do your 3rd f***ing year in the league. Especially the interception. Ridiculous.

Actually I am.

I fear it won’t be consistently dominant like the past 2 years, and our defense is based around the concept of dominant D-Line.

Very much.

They’ve gotten NO pressure lately. I think we’ll see some genuine blitzing by necessity this year.

That's a slippery slope.

It leaves our defense exposed over the top. If you’re bringing the safety, it must result in a busted play or sack most of the time.

It was good to see him make a play on the blitz.

Like VY or not, this is pretty cool...

It’s more Longhorn oriented, but here goes:

The ball sat on the 8-yard line as the crowd at the Rose Bowl, dripping with excitement, anxiety and anticipation, waited for quarterback Vince Young and the Texas Longhorns to take the field with 30 seconds left in the 2005 national championship game.

It was 38-33, Southern Cal. Everything was on the line.

Young, staring the biggest moment of his life in the face, paused before running back out onto the field following a time out. He turned to the little-known redshirt freshman, the small-town quarterback who hadn’t played a down of college football. Yet.

“Take notes.” Young said to Colt McCoy. “I’m fixin’ to go out here and win this thing, and you need to watch. Next year, this is going to be you. You need to lead them back here.”

Young then slapped the side of McCoy’s helmet and ran onto the field.

Eleven seconds later, Young was in the end zone. He had given Texas a 41-38 victory and the college football national championship.

by SuperHorn on Aug 31, 2009 9:45 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

What the hell does this have to do with anything here?

So Vince Young had a great college career. So what? He sucks now and he will never amount to anything in the NFL.

And I don’t give a screaming eagle shit about Texas.

Just stop with the inane Texas bullshit.

Right.

I get that. But, it’s as if that’s become a habit. It hasn’t. In fact, short of some Colt McCoy talk, I’ve talked about nothing Longhorn related.

The article above isn’t directly Titans related. But, it does involve a player on the team. And, it is a good story. It’s not like it says “here’s why Vince should start.” It’s certainly has more to do with “anything here” than clips from The Office, or Seinfeld, which you don’t seem to have a problem with.

I get that you’re tired of the VY talk. Shit, even I am. I stumbled across that story, and passed it along. Just as I would have about one about Chris Johnson, or any other player.

by SuperHorn on Aug 31, 2009 10:35 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I thought the implication was...

… that Colt McCoy is the Titans’ new QB of the future.

I can completely agree with Gramsey's sentiment here

In this offseason alone, 4 years (I got it right) after the game happened, we have had 2 separate stories that illustrate the “coolness” of Vince Young in that moment before the drive to beat USC. As a Titans fan who hates the Texas Longhorns, I don’t care. In fact, he probably had a few moments like that in some Titans huddles too and it didn’t play out.

Every time there is a play or drive where a QB led his team to victory against the odds, stories come out for years afterwards of what he did and said in the moments before “showtime”. It just gets old. And this one posted is especially cheesy and mythologically sounding.

Vince Young passing down his confidence and saying to Colt McCoy “Watch and learn, it’ll be your turn soon” as if he knew he was passing the torch. And that young kid stared up at the great man before him and knew in his heart that something special was about to happen that would change his life forever. And that young kid grew up to be a talented football player who lost to Texas Tech but beat Oklahoma and Ohio State last year and had a decent argument to be in the BCS Championship. What an amazing moment.

Come on. That kinda crap belongs in a Keith Jackson Gatorade commercial.

I watched the replay this morning of Sat. game against the Browns and I have to say you may have to just live with

his accomplisments in his college days and be content with that.
The play where VY did a good job on Sat. was where he was nearly sacked but shook off the defender and scrambled for about 19 yards. However he had a lot of tough plays that just didn’t look good at all. The fumble at the one was unacceptable and the pick 6 looked awful. He did have a nice drive after that resulted in a TD. I don’t think that makes up for the mistakes and is a big reason why he is the second teamer. There was a delay of game mixed in which should not happen to a four year player.

Joy Kat

by Joy kat on Aug 31, 2009 9:55 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You may have to be content with VY's glory days in college.

On Sat, he fumbled the ball away which cost a TD. He also threw a bone-headed int. which should not happen to a 4 yr player in the NFL. He nearly had another pick and he had trouble with another snap and one delay of game penalty. The play that he did good on though was when he was almost sacked but scrambled and gained 18 yards. He made a few nice short passes. He did have some that were thrown behind the receiver or thrown high.

Figured as much.

I guess we’ll just have to see if he can turn it around in the next few years.

I think things got twisted around, somewhere here, though. I’m not suggesting he performed well on Saturday…haven’t even seen it yet. Nor am I calling for him to start.

by SuperHorn on Aug 31, 2009 10:57 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Contributing to the over

Not in the VY camp, but I thought he looked a lot better than he has in awhile on Saturday. The bonehead plays speak volumes about his decision making problems. So even though I don’t have a lot of confidence in him, my opinion improved from Saturday because I saw that he can actually throw the ball, and sometimes hit receivers in stride for big plays, and he can still scramble. There have been times during his long slump that I’ve thought he just can’t throw at all. period. He’s just got to reduce the panic driven bone-headed plays. No QB is going to eliminate them. I don’t care if you’ve been in the league for 30 years, you’re still going to make a mental error every now and then. You guys that are saying a 4th year player should “never” make such a bone-headed mistake are being unreasonable, and I shall remind you of that the first time Kerry has a “bone-headed” play in the regular season. But no doubt, Vince has them way too often. Can’t have multiple times during a game when the fans are looking at each other and goin’ : “what the heck did he just do?”

Yeah, somewhat..

I do think Bud is sorta pulling Jeff’s strings. I mean Bud quickly stated after the TB game that VY was gonna be the QB for us, that he wasn’t leaving. Instead of just waiting the season out to see how he’d progressed, since there was talk he might redo his figures for next season. Hard to negotiate a restruture for less when the owner is that much behind you. I think he’s not starting because Bud’s ok with Kerry teaching VY for a while, especially since he knows how good the team is overall, but if Kerry was to struggle, I think we’ll see VY in. I’m not trying to stir up anything. It’s just my opinion, lol.

here's the only reliable report I saw:
Cook injured: Rookie tight end Jared Cook left the stadium with a protective boot on his right foot, but Coach Jeff Fisher downplayed the injury.

Cook was seen walking to the dressing room during the second half, his right shoe and sock off.

“He came out because we took him out,‘’ Fisher said. "He may have (an injury), but I think he could’ve played (longer).’’

In the locker room, Cook was walking with a limp. He said he rolled his ankle and also injured his shin.

“I think I’ll be all right,’’ he said.

Cook, the team’s leading receiver this preseason, had another good game: five catches for 39 yards.

“He was open, and you know he’s a guy we’d like to get the ball,’’ quarterback Kerry Collins said.

The loss of Carr looks increasingly devastating for the Titans. He did a decent job filling in as a depth guy in the secondary as well as being a hellva kick returner. Anyone think we could pry a guy like Justin Miller away from the Jets? I hate to leave secondary depth and KR duties to the waiver wire.

Reading the same quotes?

August, I am a bit confused by your analysis of Fisher’s statements about Ramsey. Your take is “Fisher sounds like he wants to keep Ramsey around as well.” I thought he was very non-commital regarding Ramsey. Sure, he said he’d love to keep 4 QBs, but what coach wouldn’t? That’s stating something obvious and vague to keep from answering specifically about keeping Ramsey as a third.

I think the much more telling quote is this: "I think Pat can play in this league.‘’ That’s exactly what you say about a backup you like but are about to cut. It’s an endorsement to try to repay a guy that came into camp and helped make the team better but does not have a place on the team.

Ramsey served his purpose in pushing VY, but that’s over now. The only thing left for him to do is take some snaps in the game Thursday night. Then hopefully Fisher’s endorsement will help him find a job somewhere else outside the AFC South.

by TNTitan89 on Aug 31, 2009 11:00 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

my reading was probably a good bit biased

by Fisher’s history, especially since they kept Simms around last year. I read the comment about ‘Pat can play’ as an endorsement, but I agree it’s open to interpretation.

by August West on Aug 31, 2009 11:07 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think the difference...

in Simms and Ramsey is that Simms was coming off the spleen injury and had potential to be a starter if he rebounded well from the injury. With Ramsey, I think the best you could hope for is a good backup. Plus, it was Collins who was the question mark this time last year. Now they know what they have in Collins, so there’s less reason to keep a third guy.

Plus, if you’re gonna keep 4 RBs and 4 TEs and a BUNCH of D-Linemen, you really cannot keep 3 QBs. I seriously just do not think you can do it, unless they’ve finally decided to just decimate the deadwood in the WR-corps.

Why doesn’t everybody just stop replying to posts about VY. Every single person on this blog already has their opinion of him formed. Nothing we write will change each others minds. Everything that we have to say about him has already been said. Several times. Everyone should be limited to 1 comment about him per article.I, for one, hate sifting through all this VY rabble. We could probably create a whole blog dedicated to this meaningless crap.

Texas folks don’t come here to read about Michael Griffin and Bo Scaife, and I have yet to see a comment from an ECU fan following CJ’s career….

VY is about the beginning and the end of our national pull.

haha

well in that case…

We should give Young a chance to return kickoffs.

Discuss…

Christie kicks it high and short...Gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25...He dishes it back to Wycheck...He throws it across the field to Dyson...

We are ranked 13th in NFL.com's QB group rankings
Comment: Collins solidified the position but he is not asked to do much in the passing game. Vince Young looks lost at times, and Ramsey, with his starting experience, gives the Titans a possible answer if Young stumbles.

Finnegan getting work on the left side!

Now thats what I want to hear! Had we done some of this last year we might have been able to get some pressure on Favre and continue the win streak. We really did make it easy for the Jets by not moving Cortland around last year. By leaving Finn one on one to Favres left, all we did was play away from our defenses strengths. Its near impossible to pressure Favre when he is taking three-step-drops and throwing quick slant patterns(to his right) all day. Had we moved Finnegan to the left side(Favres right) it would have made him have to look to the opposite side of the field, which would have then led to less three-step-drops, and forced more five-step-drops and shotgun sets. I dont know about anyone else but I would much rather have had Chris Carr to Favres backside, so if he did throw it that way he would have had to open his stance up or move around some, allowing the defense a couple tenths of a second longer to make a play.

why i've started listening to the radio

over the tv game announcers. we get wycheck and mike keith here, and while they lag behind the broadcast a few seconds, they provide a lot more information on details. they mentioned the fact that Finnegan was playing opposite where he usually does.

The last game I watched was sync'ed completely.

It was awesome.

I would like to congratulate

everyone on this thread. While I was write about the over 85, there is a lot of non-Vince comments in here. I feel like we as a community are growing.

Why couldn't we get this many on the Retire #9 post? That was meant to be the most ever.
