Tennessee Titans Morning Links: Titans Receivers Make Believers... In Curses Edition
You know how everything we've heard about Jared Cook has been almost too good to be true? The hands, the speed, the athleticism, the acrobatic catches.... Haven't we all been silently waiting for that crappy part of the pick to come out that you just wish you didn't know? Well Gary Estwick is here to whack that curious cat: Cook's older brother is in camp with the Ratbirds! (h/t to Michaeltastic, who I just noticed had sent me this same link!)
I can't ever remember a back-up punter making as many headlines as A.J. Trapasso, but this time it's Craig Hentrich making the headlines by saying A.J. will be an NFL punter for a long, long time.
Tullly is back! And just as an addendum to the post on guessing the roster and the discussion of surprise cuts: the scuttlebutt on 104.5's broadcast from training camp yesterday was that Ryan Fowler may be headed out, largely because of the talented depth in that group and Fowler's lack of special teams impact...
Follow us through the link to find out what other injured guys are headed back to the line-up for Saturday...
Dear Mark Jones: we need you to be as good, if not better, than advertised. This team relies on good special teams plays and field position a little too much, so take full advantage of your first chance to play on Saturday.
Kevin Mawae is now expecting to start in Saturday's exhibition against the Browns. You gotta feel bad for Leroy Harris, who has shown he's ready to start in the NFL, but it'll be nice to have the old bear back at center.
Jim Wyatt has some unanswered questions about the receiving corps. Fortunately I'm here to help: maybe, Jones, a little, nope and studly.
Paul K recaps the two minute drill results from yesterday's practice, as well as the hijinks that usually occur as camp is breaking.
Jonathan Mohan asks (with Joe Biddle-like piecing powers of observation): Is the Titans' receiving corps cursed? I'd say no, but the careers here of Pickens, Thigpen, Dyson, Givens and now Washington's injury would be enough to make Richard Dawkins start to at least consider believing.

Re: Two Minute drill
It’s been quiet around here lately. Let’s try this one on for size.
Vince Young runs a better two minute drill than Kerry Collins.
Thoughts?

Nice try
Refer to my VY/KC ditty in the fanpost on Kerry shining this year.

This isn't a "Vince should Start" comment

I think...
….Kerry just needs to exercise a little more ambition, sometimes. Yes, a FG is nice – but a TD can be nicer. I think the “make no mistakes” minset placed on him sometimes tempers the ambition in a situation like the two-minute drills.

given his career TD/INT ratio
I can do without him taking very many risks.

I understand that...
….but I’m thinking more about things like throwing the ball away when there’s no pressure, and throwing the ball for one yard over-the-middle with 20 seconds left.
I still think he can be “safe,” yet set his sights higher sometimes.

You guys took superhorn's bait
Seriously though, I’d like to see some of Vince this year. If they aren’t just lying through their teeth about their belief that he’s the “QB of the future”, he needs at least a bit of playing time this year to evaluate and see how far he’s come. I still don’t have a lot of confidence in him, but I wanna see what he can do now.

I think we are going to learn
that the “QB of the future” stuff is just Coach Fisher lip service.

Roster spots will be hard to come by this year
and the Titans only ever keep one punter, but since Craig is likely going to retire soon, think there’s a chance they might keep two this year?
by numbertenox on Aug 27, 2009 10:13 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
It'd be nice but...
Like you said, roster spots will be a premium this year. I don’t see Craig playing next season, so it’d be nice if somehow we could have him for next season, but I don’t think it’ll happen.

Inactive every week?
If keeping Chris Henry with little potential on the roster last year so that he could be inactive every week was acceptable, why not keep someone around whom you expect to start for you next year? Most teams have a third QB and we don’t. Can’t we keep a punter for a year instead?
by TNTitan89 on Aug 27, 2009 3:18 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I mean someone has to be inactive, so why not a second punter instead of a 4th string WR?
by TNTitan89 on Aug 27, 2009 3:20 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
And when Craig has his annual back problems, do we be prepared for that or just find the best available guy off the street (which could be AJ, but who knows if he is still available then?).
by TNTitan89 on Aug 27, 2009 3:22 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Good Points
I can’t disagree with keeping AJ because of Craig’s back problems are likely to flare up, and even if somehow they didn’t, I don’t think he’ll return next season. So I wish they would myself. But, I think they’ll use that spot in an area they think is a more pressing need.

Do you mean...
have Bironas add punting duties on top of his field goals and kickoffs? Maybe to finish off a game or maybe for one week, but certainly no longer than that. Actually, I would like to see Trapasso take the kickoff duties so that Rob can be fresh and available to finish off those drives that stall on the 43-yard line.
by TNTitan89 on Aug 27, 2009 4:13 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
We should keep Trapasso.
But the rosters are such that carrying two punters would sacrifice depth somewhere else that they deem more valuable. If the office finds the need to keep a second punter, expect that the spot would come from a depth heavy position like D-Line.
Also, i love Craig, but i love Trapasso for his willingness to do the trick play, even if that has no bearing on actual punting.
Who doesn't want to be a promiscuous dope fiend?

D-line depth...
are actually people who will play on Sunday because of the rotation used. I would expect it to be someone at the bottom of the WR depth chart who would be cut in favor of Trapasso. A look at last year’s inactives shows Chris Simms, Chris Henry, Paul Williams, and Chris Davis to be the primary healthy scratches for the year. So that would point to RB or WR as a spot where you could make room for a guy like AJ.
by TNTitan89 on Aug 27, 2009 5:45 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think so too...
We purposely brought in extra D-Linemen to fill the huge hole left by Haynesworth, so I don’t think they’d let go of D-Line spots in favor of a punter .. because we will be relying heavily on our defense, like usual. I think if they decided to keep AJ, it’d come at the expense of WR depth.
Alas, I still don’t think they make a place for AJ. Even though he’d eventually be worth it.

Is this gonna be a long thread...
on Craig giving us a better chance to win the game because he seldom makes mistakes against AJ who has tons of upside and can be a playmaker?
Because i’ve got a lot of old comments in the archives where I could just replace Kerry with Craig and VY with AJ and paste it here.

It's not so much a Playmaker vs. Game Manager question.
I think if Hentrich were healthy, everyone would want him to stay. The problem is that he’s had trouble staying healthy, and at this point he has no upside. Typically, the better move in that case is to go to the rookie and hope for the best.

if we don't sign trap....
someone for sure will, he made a name for himself after that whole thing in dallas. at least enough for some teams to take a look.

I like Hentrich, but in this case, I think the team should have pushed him to retire.
They found a good young punter and need to make the right long-term decision about it.

just to put this out there
from what i have seen of trapasso in practice, he still has some work to do in the consistency department. i think it could be a little too soon to talk about him as a punter in craig’s league. craig is also a dynamite holder, so i’m not sure we should be so quick to talk of replacing him.

Trapasso:
Sounds like he was a pretty good running back in high school so he has some ball skills. With a little direction from Craig, maybe he could be just as good of a snap handler.
Christie kicks it high and short...Gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25...He dishes it back to Wycheck...He throws it across the field to Dyson...
