Projecting the Tennessee Titans 53 Man Roster
This is always a fun exercise to do this time of year. After the jump, I have compiled what I think the Titans' roster will look like based on the guys that are in camp right now. There are a couple of wild cards, but this is a pretty straight forward list. I do believe that the Titans will have an eye on the waiver wire for a veteran defensive back or the like. The list also assumes everyone is healthy when cut down day comes.
QB
Kerry Collins, Vince Young, Patrick Ramsey (3)
RB
Chris Johnson, LenDale White, Javon Ringer, Ahmard Hall (4)
WR
Nate Washington, Justin Gage, Kenny Britt, Lavelle Hawkins, Mark Jones (5)
TE
Alge Crumpler, Bo Scaife, Jared Cook, Craig Stevens (4)
OL
Michael Roos, Jake Scott, Kevin Mawae, Eugene Amano, David Stewart, Leroy Harris, Mike Otto, Troy Kropog (8)
DE
Kyle Vanden Bosch, Jevon Kearse, Jacob Ford, William Hayes, Dave Ball (5)
DT
Tony Brown, Jovan Haye, Jason Jones, Sen'Derrick Marks, Kevin Vickerson (5)
LB
Keith Bulluck, Stephen Tulloch, David Thornton, Ryan Fowler, Gerald McRath, Stanford Keglar (6)
CB
Cortland Finnegan, Nick Harper, Ryan Mouton, Cary Williams, DeMarcus Faggins, Jason McCourty (6)
S
Michael Griffin, Chris Hope, Vincent Fuller, Donnie Nickey (4)
ST
Rob Bironas, Craig Hentrich, Ken Amato (3)
There is my list with some help from August and gramsey. Let me know what you think.

WR
Was hoping either Edison/Guice would make the final cut.
Also, will be tough to see Ganther go, given his ST contributions.
Any chance we go with only two QBs?
man we're going to have to cut a few guys I don't want to lose
like good problem to have, I guess.

that hair should keep him off the 53
I don’t understand why Edison is getting more burn than Guice. Guice is clearly the better receiver. Everyone knew it in their little conference. Edison is a body catcher. If either one lands on the practice squad, he’ll be gone pretty quickly. Guice had 20 teams call him after the draft.
Edison has been getting it done in camp
and that goes a long way. Plus, it could be issues with inconsistency like we’ve seen with Hawkins that are dogging him more than raw ability.

Am I alone in thinking that at this point AJ Trapasso has more upside than Hentrich? Did you see the hit he put on Buffalo?
Craig is better with accuracy and pinning teams on the goal line
but he lost a lot of yardage on his punts last year. Trapasso won’t make the active roster, but I bet you they keep him on speed dial because Craig’s back has been a big problem the last few years as well…

Trapasso
is probably the Titan with the most media attention this preseason, with the fake punt TD and hitting the video board. He will definitely be on a team.

Not enough WRs, Jimmy.
In the past they’ve kept 7. I think the addition of Cook this year means they’ll only keep 6, but that’s still one more than you have listed. For my money, that puts Troy Kropog on the Practice Squard and either Edison of Guice on the team. Which one will depend on who they think they can successfully hide on the Practice Squad.
Also, if they think Ringer can be their return-guy, you might see them cut Mark Jones. In which case, you’ll have C. Davis on the team despite his DUI because he can also return kicks in a pinch. And that would put us at the magic number of 7 WRs, or perhaps mean that Q. Ganther sneaks on for special teams and back-up fullback duties.

Eh, forget my math on the last comment.
You couldn’t keep Q even with Ringer returning kicks because then you don’t have a back-up return guy. So you have to keep C. Davis because he can return kicks. And Q looks like he’s getting cut no matter what happens.

I would agree right now
that Kropog is the 53rd man. August really likes him though..

Mouton, Guice, and I think McCourty
all returned in college.

I'll bet the house Kropog makes the 53
book it. There’s no way in hell they relegate him to the practice squad for any of the WRs at the bottom of the list… I know we like the guys but everyone on here knows they won’t contribute diddly this year.
The extra space could come from cutting Nickey, Otto, Vickerson or sending McGrath to the practice squad al a Tulloch his rookie year.

Eh...
Personally, I doubt that they keep less than 6 WRs. I might like to see 5, but I believe they’ll keep 6. That said, if you want to trade Otto for Kropog, then fine. For that matter, McGrath to the Practice Squad would probably make some sense as well.
It’s a shame they’re probably going to let Q. go. He’s been a valuable guy the last few years. If Sarge goes down, they’re gonna have a problem without a back-up FB, and Sarge has missed a few games for each of the last two seasons.
DannoE

we kept 7 WRs for the past few years because 5-6 of them were usually trash. they could trim from the bottom of that group because the top end is better now.

true dat
but I’d like to see us at least get some trade value out of one or more of these talented players we’re about to cut. Particularly Q. Birdine also has had a great preseason. Why do we need Crumpler on the roster? I feel like Craig Stevens can do almost everything he can do at this point, and he’s 10 years younger.
by joshuaboone on Aug 24, 2009 12:10 PM CDT up reply actions
I think its the leadship that crump can provide the younger tight ends
like when he saved stevens from fighting with KVB phew that would have been one less tightend lol but the real reason is the blocking crumpler can do and he can catch every now and then though he is huge.

that and maybe mark jones
Que Where?!?!
by SouthTexasTitan on Aug 24, 2009 12:21 PM CDT up reply actions
That would be very un-Fisher-like.
Fisher is nothing if not loyal to veterans. I will agree that they COULD cut Alge. His contract certainly allows it, and they could certainly move Stevens into the “Blocking” TE’s spot, and in fact, that would also allow they to potentially keep Casey Cramer, who can play both TE and FB. So I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad move. But it would be way out of character.
I think M. Jones is gone unless he can DAZZLE this weekend.
DannoE
"You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one."
maybe
but it’s not like he’s a TITANS veteran. He came here for one year and was just about the biggest disappointment in recent memory.
Agreed 100% about Jones. That wouldn’t surprise me at all
save him for one more year
Alge is getting old and hes a lot of money that could be trimmed off of our roster because we already have solid tight ends, but even Bo Scaife is still young and Jared Cook is just a rookie so they both can learn from alge how to block better and be a more complete tight end so i would keep him for one more year and then let him go.
But we have so many talented players
i dont know which way to turn……..

Has anyone else noticed that Damarcus Faggins has not looked sharp
in the playing time he’s gotten so far? I agree with the posts above regarding who’s on the edge, but overall CB is the position that scares me most in terms of depth for this years team. Is some other team likely to cut a CB that’s better than what we’ve got in our backups?
that or we try to trade
Que Where?!?!
by SouthTexasTitan on Aug 24, 2009 12:20 PM CDT up reply actions
agreed
Harper’s injury last year allowed the Jets to beat us, and with Mouton going down, this unit is looking far from solid.
by joshuaboone on Aug 24, 2009 12:21 PM CDT up reply actions
Ya, another wr probably
And I see us cutting Ramsey to make it happen. 3 qb’s seems like too many.
by zackmann on Aug 24, 2009 12:41 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
We need 3 QBs because
KC = Age increases injury risk
VY = Can’t rely on him yet due to inconsistent performance
PR = Unproven (at least here)
by JimR on Aug 24, 2009 1:01 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
this dude
kerry has very little injury risk he is durable and behind our o line he is well protected, if you want to talk injury risk that is our backup and Patrick Ramsey hasnt proved himself anywhere thats why hes been in the league for 7 years and 3 different teams.
Ramsey will probably be cut
Simply because if we cut him noone will pick him up, and we can just have him on speed dial.
I dunno
They kept 3 last year. I feel like they’ll do the same this year. But, Sims was a young guy with potential upside, whereas with Ramsey it’s possible he might not get picked up.
Still, I feel like there’s enough uncertainty at the position that they’ll keep 3 on the roster again.
fisher's
quote (roughly) from 104.5 interview this afternoon:
“Is it etched in stone that we’ll keep 3 quarterbacks? No, nothing is ever etched in stone. We’ll likely keep three though. We’ve diagramed it on the stone but we haven’t etched it yet.”
Last season
we had 7 LB and 5 CB…I don’t see McGrath going to practice sqaud he has been pretty good in special teams. I definitly see us cutting Alge if we need the room for someone else which I think we do.
Taylor Mays > Eric Berry
As far as I can tell, this is quite an excellent list
Couldn’t do better myself. I like the idea of keeping 5 WRs personally. How many do we, the Titans, really need? We never use them.
T-Rac's Posse - T-Rac is one boss raccoon.
My personal Tribute to Air McNair
I agree with your selections, except for maybe Ramsey
I doubt if he will be kept around unless he really can prove something. The safety against the Cowboys did not help his case. The Titans will pick up another q.b. somewhere.
Lots of depth on the roster, the pre season is no indication of what will happen during the year. Fisher is very intelligent and won’t divulge his plans during these “kind of like real” games. I have no legitimate concerns except for some on defense and what will happen there. The gaping hole that was filled by A.H. is first and foremost on my mind and who really knows how successfully those shoes will be filled until the season opener.
Joy Kat
The list is pretty close for sure...
I’m not too sure about L. Hawkins and M. Jones on the WR spots. I agree with what someone posted about M. Jones, unless he just absolutely dazzles us in both returns and as a WR in these last two preseason games, he’ll be cut. And as much as I like Hawk, his inconsistent play may have doomed him. The 4th TE position is tough to call, between Stevens and Cramer, but I think Cramer may get the nod because of his ability to play FB too, since Q might not make it. Anyway, some are gonna be tough calls, glad I’m not having to make them. lol
Good List
1. I hope Tuff Harris makes it
2. Doesn’t look good for Mark Jones, I think they’ll pick up someone off the other team cut list for returns

oh yeah
I forgot how terrible that pass to Britt was Friday. I’m sure VY would have loved to have led him too… if he could throw it another 20 yards (the real solution is to make that decision sooner).

dallas fan
I was watching game with said same thing on that throw.
still, it was in the vicinity. It wasn’t as bad as some of the long balls he threw in his second season.
Trapasso WILL make the squad
and Hentrich will retire as opposed to being cut and Hentrich will replace Al Lowery as Special Teams Coach next year.
I could see all of that except Lowery leaving as the Special Teams Coach.
Does Hentrich even WANT to coach? And more to the point, they usually start coaches in the talent evaluation or quality control.

"You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one."
Mark Jones
will not make it and I think Paul Williams will probably take his spot
disagree
Paul Williams sucks. There are receivers in camp that no one but Cort can cover, but Paul can’t get off hardly anyone’s jam.

Jason Murphy
will make the club. He can play Guard and Center and will knock CB Carey Williams off the roster.
DeMarcus Faggins
will be cut right before the season opener and will be replaced by a CB that has also been recently released. The Titans will be looking for a player that fits their system, has experience and has some upside.

He is utterly useless against nfl competition. He was definitely a feel-good story, but no longer. Another team can have him, he looks like a midget out there.

I don’t remember where, but I remember hearing that he’d landed someplace new and being surprised that he wasn’t still in Denver after they were so terrible last year. He had to be one of the better players in their secondary.

Another WR is now a must
Edison/Guice/someone to be named later doesn’t seem like an option at this point. The only position where there seems to be an excess of players and no injury requiring additional numbers is QB.
