Tennessee Titans Morning Links: Ribonucleic Acid Freak Out Edition
Chris Davis certainly didn't help himself get a roster spot by getting popped for a DUI last night around 4 a.m. The team had already left for Dallas, but Davis was staying behind due to a hamstring injury. In an incredibly weird twist, the arresting officer was the same guy who was suspended after pulling McNair over in 2003, and the same cop who pulled McNair and his killer over (she got a DUI) two days before his murder.
This is about as close as we'll get to an apology from LenDale for his fumble in the Baltimore game, and it was actually nice to read:
"I'm a humbled man," White says. "When the clock strikes triple zeroes and you have to walk off the field knowing you're one of the reasons your team lost, it hurts man."
To his credit, White didn't duck reporters afterward. He made himself available for waves of repeat questions, and came away saying the experience taught him three things.
"I think I learned how to be a football player, and I learned how to grow up," he says. "And I learned I need to hold on to the damn football."
This week's edition of the Friday Jams features my boys Clutch (who I've linked to before, but they're that good), and their binary coded masterpiece: 10001110101.
Follow us through the jump for a mountain of links...
After being told he had too many carries in college to have a long NFL career, Javon Ringer is dead-set on proving those folks wrong. Given that he's about to take a former 2nd round pick's roster spot, I'd say he's well on his way. Here's another post from the excellent blog Sparty and Friends by a Michigan State fan who is pulling for Ringer.
SI.com's John P. Lopez goes through the AFC and comes up with the player each team could least afford to lose. Ours was Boom King, but there are legit concerns about his health that he really needs to answer this year. if he's able to stay relatively healthy, then I'd expect him to have another Pro Bowl caliber year.
Tonight's game is extra exciting for a few Titans, namely former Cowboy Ryan Fowler and Texas native DeMarcus Faggins, as they'll be part of history by breaking in the new Cowboys stadium.
Stephen Tulloch is out for tonight, but plans on practicing all next and resuming his starting role against Cleveland. I hope he can get back to 100% soon, but it is nice knowing that we have reliable back-up like Fowler right there when we need him.
The ever-dligent SoCal points us towards this season preview on examiner.com.
Colin Cowherd is a definite douchecanoe, even if he did side with our boy here. You gotta love that this is cutting edge programing on ESPN. I'm just waiting for them to come up with a Chelsea Handler type show where three comedians and friggin' Erik Kuselias sit around and crack jokes in the 'Best Week Ever' vein... you know this is coming soon.
So will Dungy go out on a limb for the other Vick brother? Hell, the worst he ever did was stomp on Elvis Dumervil back in college. Marcus had the same crappy raising and influences, so where's the out cry for his 'second shot'?
I'll have to admit, when Ochocinco is in a good headspace, he can be one of the funnier players in the league.

Marcus Vick did have charges against him for brandishing a gun
on three teenagers by a restaurant back in his college days at Va. Tech. I agree about the upbringing being lousy for him and Michael. I hope Michael learned his lesson, he had to do it the hard way. It was so dumb of him to risk (and lose) his fortune over dog fighting. I truly hope he does well with the Eagles.

yeah I don't really care if either of them does anything ever
I was more so just bitching about how absurd Tony Dungy’s role was in this Vick fiasco. I lost a lot of respect for the guy with this one.

I have a lot of respect for Dungy, and it will take a lot to diminish it but
he does seem to be whoring himself out these days – Vick, Harrison…

I see
I honestly think he has learned something from going to jail and losing his 131 million dollars, he felt he deserved to lose the money for what he did , at least that is what he said in the 60 minutes interview. It is hard to be against someone who is trying to do the right thing. As far as Marcus goes, I don’t really care either.
The odd thing to me was why would Dungy even get involved in this? If he wanted to make an impact that would impress people, work at a homeless shelter or go do missionary work for a year.

"work at a homeless shelter or go do missionary work for a year."
I 100% agree. Help people who probably hit hard times through no fault of their own, not jackasses who brutalized other living creatures for sport and want back into the elite profession they used to bank roll it all.
Never mind the fact that he was running an illegal gambling operation…

Dungy does do "Mission work" and work for the homeless.
Have any of us gone and done missionary work for a year? I don’t know if Dungy has done specifically that but he has done plenty of outreach work, and he chose to counsel a man who while obviously an idiot with bad judgment and no morals, is also somebody who could use and need help. Dungy saw someone with dark problems of understanding cruelty and chose to reach out to him. Are we really going to criticize him for that? And Harrison is his former player, why would he not endorse him? Both of these events don’t have to take up a huge part of his time, and obviously isn’t because he is in the midst of starting a bunch of different programs to help inner city kids and less fortunate kids, I know because I see the commercials all the time.
I personally wouldn’t have given Vick the time of day, but frankly, that’s probably a reflection on me and my lack of compassion more than it is on Dungy and his seemingly odd choices in people he chooses to help.
And Dungy can’t and shouldn’t be required to go to bat for every single person who suffers from some problem or deficiency in character, although I am sure he wishes he could.
Keep in mind, Dungy had a son commit suicide, and I am sure that haunts him, and I am sure when he sees a young African-American male like Michael Vick he sees a chance to atone for this. I don’t want to play armchair psychologist too much, but Dungy is obviously a caring and good man who wants to help as many people as he can with his life. Why are we begrudging him this, exactly, and telling him what he “should” be doing if he wants to “really” be a good person, when the stuff mentioned he actually has done? Seems stupid to me.

"Why are we begrudging him this"
because Vick has done approximately dick to earn Dungy’s help other do enough to throw much of his life away with his own habitually despicable decisions.
Dungy can help who he wants to help, but he’s asking people to go along with his endorsement of Vick (why else would he be shilling for him so publicly?) and I simply can’t do it in good conscience.
I never said Dungy was a bad guy, but I severely disagree with Dungy using his own cache to get him back in the league.

But Dungy giving help isn't about "earning" it
Dungy ascribes to a faith where you don’t pick and choose the people you help, you just help the people you can, and Dungy is one of a few, possibly the only one, with the cache to get through to Vick. Dungy chose to use it to help him. It’s not like he started schilling him out of nowhere, he has talked and counselled with him. If Vick (which I admit this is a highly likely possibility) is just using Dungy, it’s on him, not on Dungy. Just like if a homeless man takes the dollar you give him because he has a sign that says “Help the hungry” and he then uses your dollar to buy cocaine. You still helped the homeless man, it was him who threw the help away.

Glad LenDale was so humbled and took responsibility.
Also, Dungy can play the good guy act all he wants, but he is not the purest man ever that everyone talks him up to be. I’ve never liked that he is apparently God on earth whenever he talks.

It's like Tebow
Tebow isn’t the problem; he has never done a single offensive thing since he became the face of college football. It’s the pundits that make asinine, fawning statements like ’you’re a better person if you’re merely in his presence for 5 minutes’ who need to be brought back in check.
If I had a son I’d be elated for Tony Dungy to be a mentor to him, but folks could bring the praise back down to earth sometimes.

That player is Cortland Finnegan. Boom King has good back-ups behind him. Finnegan is in a class by himself as far as the CBs are concerned. Lose him, and they’d have to change the scheme in the secondary.

No way.
No one in the NFL can replace CJs “lightning in a bottle” threat, and certainly not Javon Ringer. That’s not taking anything away from Javon, I think he’ll fill in nicely for Lendale next year. But, CJ took this team from good to great last year. And, I think his health last year was the difference between us losing and a Super Bowl ring. That can’t be said of anyone else on the team.
by SuperHorn on Aug 21, 2009 10:34 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree with that.
The problem is in the statement, “most irreplaceable”. You lose CJ, you go to White/Ringer, and yes you lose something, but no the whole Offensive scheme doesn’t change. Maybe there’s more emphasis on the passing game, but the running game was better than average with LDW and the mighty Chris Brown, and it would be better still with LDW and Ringer.
If you lose Finnegan, you can now no longer cheat in the nickle by rolling a safety to Harper’s side. At a mimimum, your ability to play 8 in the box pretty much goes out the window, and more likely, teams will start targeting Harper, waiting for him to either come up lame or force coverage to roll back to his side, in which case you’ve probably got a rookie CB on a team’s #1 WR.

I completely get what you're saying
But, they’re is a difference between impact and adaptation. Yes, the loss of Cortland would huge and force a huge change in defensive strategy.
With the loss of CJ, the gameplan pretty much stays the same. However, the loss of a running back that accounted for 30% of the offense will certainly have a larger impact.
Cortland is great. It’s important to remember though, that his job is made much easier with a strong defensive line. If we can continue to get good pressure with 4 up front, the absence of a premier corner isn’t nearly as painful.

I think I have to agree with DannoE
Harper is good for what he is, but without Finnegan, he turns from “good at what he is” to “Wow, that guy is a huge liability.” Our secondary makes me nervous, it’s very precariously balanced. I think if we lost CJ it would OBVIOUSLY be big, but our O-Line could manufacture a run game with nearly any Runningback and the added threat of Cook and Washington and Britt along with Scaife etc., etc. We could keep the Offense productive enough to make the playoffs, even if it means we are limping in. Also, if CJ is out but the defense is good then we have that to depend upon as well.
Frankly, the loss of Finnegan scares me much more than the loss of Chris Johnson in terms of our playoff hopes.

I guess it's team specific
And, you can’t really have it that way. Ie, Finnegan is MUCH more important against he likes of New England, Indy, and maybe even the Texans.
But, if we’d lost Finnegan instead of CJ against Baltimore, I don’t see things playing out the same way.

ppl have not forgotten about lendale. i see alot of good things out of him, workin hard to come back lighter and try and get some speed goin with his power running. because if he can break that kinda run like last year (which blew my mind while it was happening) then i can’t wait to see what he can do this year. i just like his work ethic and his efforts to make everybody eat s**t and prove them wrong. even though we have alot of talent at the RB spot, i’d like to see him in a titans uniform for a while, hope something can work out and he isnt doing all of this to showcase to other teams when it comes time for his contract to be done.
