Tennessee Titans Morning Links: We Do Have Players Other Than Vince Young Edition
Jim Wyatt talks with Fisher about competition for the number two spot on the depth chart, and the prospect of Vince getting a start during this preseason.
Patrick Ramsey showed he's no wash-out on Sunday night, but he's got a ways to go before I'm impressed. Still, you have to feel better about him than you have some of our previous third string guys (I'm looking at you, Tim Rattay)
People are concerned about the 'sluggish' run game on Sunday just because... they need something to talk about. Trying to discern trends from that performance is as useless as saying that it looks like we won't punt the ball on most 4th downs this year because of the fake. This was pre-pre-season, and not to be watched that closely.
Well, at least he didn't stomp it...
Follow us through the jump to figure-out if Chris Johnson missed the bus or not.
Chris Johnson missed a team bus because of his gold teeth? This doesn't make sense...
Everyone around this team is raving about Jared Cook and his highlight reel catches almost every time he hits the field. When 'Diger says you could compare to Shannon Sharpe, whom he once coached, you know you could be something special with the right focus and a few good breaks.
Yahoo! does a great job chronicling our years-long quest to get a big-framed receiver who can scoot down the field and make some big plays; failed attempts included Calico, Troupe and the truly horrible Mike Williams.
If this quote alone doesn't make you click on this link to Football Outsiders, then you're not much of a football fan by most accounts:
[Dan] Marino is the NFL's all-time comeback king, not Elway.

Sluggish running game? Please.
Obviously, I hate the Titans – but I thought you guys looked really good. The D-Line sans Fat Albert was especially impressive. I know it’s one preseason game, but the rotation you guys are going with looks like it could be very, very good… plus, as much as I hate to admit it – I think the Titans have the best O-Line in the NFL.
The thing that most impressed me though, was Nate Washington. I didn’t actually realize that he was as fast as he is… I guess I somehow thought he was more of a possession receiver than a playmaker – but obviously I didn’t do too much homework on that. He does add a very scary dimension.
It hurts my heart to say good things about the Titans, but I don’t think they’ll experience too much of a drop this year like a lot of people are saying. Bottom line is – both lines are VERY strong, so I expect you to pick up where you left off.

Thanks man.
Personally, I’m still worried about the interior of the D-Line. Buffalo is no power-house running game, but i still thought they were getting push up the middle when Vickerson was out. I hope like Hell that that dude can stay on the roster. We need that beef.

From the press conference:
(on closing the gap between Patrick Ramsey and Vince Young)
Well Patrick [Ramsey] understands what we’re doing. He’s familiar with this offense, and we’re talking about one preseason game. So Vince [Young] is our two, and Patrick is three.
(on difficulties when evaluating Patrick Ramsey against young players)
Part of the preseason process is to put people in different situations and scenarios. So it’s not unlikely that Vince wouldn’t have a start. There’s a chance that Vince will start a preseason game as we move forward. We will give Pat an opportunity to play a little earlier on.
I don’t think there is any way that Patrick Ramsey gets the nod at #2.

If he does get teh nod, the TN almost has to cut VY, don't they?

No.
Not this season at least. Next season, for sure, if he’s #3.
All that said, I don’t see anyway that happens. Even if Ramsey comes out of camp better, I don’t see Fish doing it because of the controversy that would ensue, and Fisher has won with Vince before. Ramsey is 10-14 as a starter and hasn’t started a game since 2005.

yeah
the only chance ramsey passes vince on the depth chart is if kerry goes down with a major injury and who the backup is becomes truly relevant. even in that case i still think vince gets the first crack.

Eh...
There’s plenty of cap room this season. I’m at the point where I could almost see them just cutting their losses with Vince at the end of the pre-season and ending the experiment. Granted, it doesn’t necessarily make a lot of financial sense, except in the sense that VY’s salary is already a sunk cost, and on a good team, you want to field the best team possible.
I think Fish thinks this is HIS YEAR, and he’s not taking ANY chances with it, VY or no VY.

I concur
Does VY cost more on the roster or off? He is really becoming a sideshow at this point.

Cost's more if we cut him.
The only way it makes sense to cut him is if he’s some huge locker room distraction.
If the team can deal with the media frenzy last year, I can’t see anything coming up this year that would warrant cutting him.
by SuperHorn on Aug 11, 2009 12:57 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Cool
Then it definitely doesn’t make sense to cut him.
But this team has done things before that don’t make no sense, i.e. NOT RESIGNING KEITH BULLUCK.

Right.
But, is anyone here really ready to say that Vince Young is worse than Patrick Ramsey?
Ramsey is a poor mans Kerry Collins, and, to be clear, that’s not a good thing. One of my closest friends is a diehard Redskins fan. By association, I watched a bunch of his games in Washington. I can’t see us winning with Ramsey. Nothing good comes of him starting.
At least with Vince, if Kerry goes down, you can write Vince’s performance off as looking to the future. If he plays well, restructure. If he doesn’t, he’s on another team next year.

i actually think (from practice)
ramsey has the best arm on the team. he certainly throws the prettiest ball. accuracy and decision making are unknown to me though.

To be clear, I was horrified when they signed Ramsey.
The fact that we’re even talking about having him play is not—at all—a good thing.

You have to keep in mind...
that the ‘Skins are notorious for changing their offense like underwear. I would imagine that it’s tough for ANY QB to play for them because just as you begin to get comfortable with one offensive style, they throw that out the window for a new one. It’s crazy, really.

Theres always a way
Especially if theres major VY concerns
But its a very slim chance

Jared Cook and Javon Ringer really impressed me
and we haven’t even seen what kenny britt is going to do yet. this is looking like a genius draft. Lendale had better watch his back, not to mention Bo Scaife.
As far as i’m concerned, i’ve seen enough of Lavelle Hawkins running the wrong routes. He just doesn’t seem to get it. I’m not touching the VY/Ramsey controversy. I think its time to stop beating the dead horse….

Im chalking this one up to miscommunication because of helmet problems.
Happens again, then maybe we can talk if this is a serious issue for him.

FWIW
a former defender on espn news, forget his name, said that Hawk actually made the right read on the defense (man 1 under) and attacked the seem over the middle of the field like he should have and that vince threw the ball at the strength of the defense, towards the outside.

It did look like he optioned out of the route and took it inside, but it also looked like VY intended to float it out there to hit him in stride right when he cut.
I think its time to stop beating the dead horse….
And I agree, Im not going to be an apologetic for anyone. We have 4 more pre season games, see what happens there, and then when the season comes lets drop it and focus on our starter, KC.

Even if it was a miscommunication, VY had time to adjust before
he threw the ball. His raw physical gifts don’t compensate for the precise decision making needed in the NFL.

We may be going for a record

I'm loving cook with quotes like this
"I haven’t proven anything yet. I’m still a rookie and I haven’t even played the first game, so I’ll just stay humble."
Christie kicks it high and short...Gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25...He dishes it back to Wycheck...He throws it across the field to Dyson...
Crowd roaring after Suter’s goal tied it up… Preds win the faceoff and Arnott crosses the blueline, slapshot and a SCORE! Arnott blows it by Hasek and the Preds take the lead 4-3…
