Tennessee Titans Morning Links: This Wouldn't Have Happened On Howard Cosell's Watch Edition

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Paul Kuharsky has a slew of posts on the Titans, Alge's weight, Nickey's in-poor-taste headshot and VY's chance to change his reputation.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Jim Wyatt weighs in on Vince Young's mixed bag of a performance last night (horrible INT, beautiful lob into the end zone) and looks at Kerry Collins and Patrick Ramsey as well.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Maybe I'm alone on this one, but last night turning into a Tony Dungy interview with the Titans game going on in the background annoyed the bajeezus out of me.  Then he starts shilling for that degenerate dog killer/gambler, and I was done.  Dungy was a great coach, and by most accounts a pretty good guy (and I understand that goes up a bump if you're into the religious thing), but why do I have to hear more from the man after he's retired?  I mean if NBC is dead set on doing an in-booth interview why wouldn't you line-up a few of the new members of the Hall of Fame instead of a recently retired coach?

Follow us through the jump to find-out why Ben Roethlisberger isn't liked in his own locker room...

Star-divide

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Here's a big ole' FAIL for those who thought Kerry was going to be terrible this year simply because he was so solid last year.  Kerry looked even more comfortable driving the offense last night, which should take a little pressure off of a defense that was letting the Bills drive down the field.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 For those who didn't catch it or just want to see it again, here's video of the fake punt and touchdown run by A.J. Trapasso from last night.  I loved that call because teams will fear our special teams trickeration all season now, even if we don't call another fake this year.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Houston folks still not liking our boys wearing the throwback unis.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 In my favorite blind item round-up, via PFW, sources within the Steelers locker room say Ben Roethlisberger is not a popular guy at all and is seen as 'arrogant and lazy'.

Hey August...

…you’re wrong about the Defense letting Buffalo drive down the field all night. I mean, I thought that, too, until the Griffin interception, and then I realized that it was just the classic “bend but don’t break” Defense that the team plays all the time. That’s what they do. They let you drive with dinks and dunks and then either stiffen at the goal-line or go for the INT when you get impatient and try to go long. Last night we saw both the INT and a pair of nice goal-line stands, and that was just in the first half!

Plus, look, VY’s play gave the Bills a short field TWICE in the first half. All in all, that was an excellent Defensive performance.

Agreed

It was like that all last year too. Strong D, making them work for the 3rd, and then really bearing down in the red zone. Secondary looked a little flat footed, but I think they showed up when it counted. (who was it that totally got juked by the short pass to the Buffalo WR, i believe in the 3rd Q?)

The run D looked great, should silence all that Haynesworth talk, just need to stay healthy and keep the energy down the stretch.

VY

Man penalties gave the bills a short field twice why people always want to blame VY dang there was a Holding call on the return and one one the run play that put them on like the 5 yard line that had nothing to do with VY! Plus there was a few drop passes also! People just see what they wanna see I guess!

by datboybevans on Aug 10, 2009 3:57 PM CDT up reply actions

A turnover gave the Bills a short field...

…and a three-and-out gave the Bills a short field. In fact, in the First Half, there was only one or maybe two penalties total.

On a personal level I agree with you Gramsey

I never cared about the Oilers and never have.

But on the other hand they did spend time in Tennessee as the Oilers. Hell, our Coach was hired as coach of the Oilers. So it isn’t completely ridiculous for us to wear Oiler uniforms.

AFL 50th anniversary, c'mon now.....

how could you let that go over your head??? and a couple of the founding teams…the buffalo bills and the HOUSTON OILERS….are a big part of that. how can you have no connection? you root for the titans right? how about a little recognition for the team that gave tennessee the team we all love, thats why they wear em in case that went over your head too, because the titans are formerly the . i guess me coming from houston its a little different, i personally love seeing the old schools brought out for this season. but like i said, i guess thats just me.

I was an oilers fan, so I love the fact that they are wearing those uniforms...

most of the fans in houston gave up on the team the last year they were there…i’m not saying they didn’t have a reason to hate bud adams..but attendance was beyond horrible in 1996. bud adams is the one constant for this organization, it’s his team….he can do whatever he wants as far as the throwbacks and team’s history. if houston would have supported the oilers and built them a stadium, they would still be there. i know there are other factors involved….but i personally love the throwbacks….LOVE THEM! luv ya blue!

Nate Washington showed flashes of the speedster we’ve needed at WR, and Crumpler actually looked pretty comfortable catching a ball again (and holding onto it), instead of just blocking. Ahhh, if only that had happened in the playoff game last year.

I COMPLETELY agree on the Dungy thing. We (my friends and I) bitched about it last night while watching the game. The line of the night from one of my friends was: “I’d rather watch a dog fight than listen to Dungy talk about his rehab with Vick.”

Everyone calm down.

Vince didn’t play well last night. He didn’t play terribly either.

1. The INT.
It was a missed route, but still a ball that probably shouldn’t have been thrown. In any event, let’s at least point out that Kerry tried his best to throw an INT as well when he nearly hit an opponent in the chest with a pass.

2. It’s the preseason. And, it’s the backups.
The generic response, “well he was playing against backups.” Garbage. Even if we’ve improved, I still think our WR core is in the bottom 10 of the NFL. What does that say about our backups? Kerry completed a whopping 37% of his passes last preseason. Let that set in…37%. That obviously had little bearing on how he performed in the regular season.

3. Chris Johnson
His impact on this offense cannot be overstated. I hope that Vince gets some reps with the first team. Just having this guy on the field makes the QB’s job that much easier.

by SuperHorn on Aug 10, 2009 10:27 AM CDT reply actions

plus points.....

for hitting the bullseye. good analysis bro, couldnt have put it better. let VY get some time with the first team and see how that goes, playing with the first team does make the QB position easier. especially with the blocking that we have (feels good to say that).

You think if he plays against the first teams that he will do better?

and....

why not. he comes in for HALF a season his rookie year, to take over Kerry Collins job, and leads us just short of the playoffs. then next year, although not all pretty, led us to the playoffs. something that hadnt been done since #9 (rip) departed. and then his 3rd year, altbeit what happened happened but only had the chance to play in that one game, and hasnt had the chance to come back since. not to take anything away from KC, he did a great job last year. but VY did not have the offensive weapons that KC has the luxury of having now, all im saying is how about we get something legit to go on before casting him out (perhaps a full season to play, history shows he may get us into the playoffs)

and about playing with and supposed to be beating 2nd and 3rd stringers, ramseys been in the league for 7 years now, so he should have slinged about 3 or 4 TD’s last night, is that what your saying? patrick ramsey haha…c’mon. ppl must really hate VY to be putting him on a pedestal.

VY did not have the offensive weapons that KC has the luxury of having now

The only weapon KC had last year that Vince did not the years previous was CJ. Yes… CJ is a huge weapon, but with that being said, CJ would not have changed teh fact that vince threw almost double as many interceptions as he did touchdowns.

In the NFL when you have your chance you have to take advantage of it, regardless of who you have around you. Vince did not do that, and KC did.

Vince will get another shot, and we will see what he does with it. Unfortunately (or fortunately) I think his next shot will come outside of nashville.

by ryansax on Aug 10, 2009 3:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Three things

Did it seem to anyone that the O-Line just didn’t protect Vince as well? I don’t know if thats personality or uncomfortable or what but it was odd.

I absolutely hated the Dungy thing. I also hated the constant Haynesworth talk and then the Cutler talk even though they could just shut up and talk about it next week. They also did a terrible job cutting away to Dungy even though there were flags and didn’t even bother to say by the way that was a holding.

All the holding was disturbing.

Who doesn't want to be a promiscuous dope fiend?

by BonzosMontreaux on Aug 10, 2009 10:38 AM CDT reply actions

Yeah, he didn't seem like he had nearly as much time.

But, he also didn’t seem totally comfortable in there, and commanding enough. Ramsey looked better in that respect. But like SuperHorn said above, he didnt play well, but he didn’t play terribly. He wasn’t given as much to work with, and I didn’t care for some of the play calling at the point either.

The holding will work itself out. And the offsides im sure.

Completely agree.

Collins is nothing if not a known quantity. He could put in two more quarters of work total in the preseason, and I’d be happy. Let VY play!

I guess I could have gone without seeing the old oilers helmets.

I actually liked the Houston Oilers back when the team was there. However Tennessee is now where they reside so I don’t see the need to go retro when the franchise has been uprooted. Should the fans all wear M.C. Hammer parachute pants to watch the game? I don’t think so.

Actually...

I would love to see that!

Christie kicks it high and short...Gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25...He dishes it back to Wycheck...He throws it across the field to Dyson...

Crowd roaring after Suter’s goal tied it up… Preds win the faceoff and Arnott crosses the blueline, slapshot and a SCORE! Arnott blows it by Hasek and the Preds take the lead 4-3…

See this is the crap that I'm talking about...

When Warren Moon was honored at a game during the season…i heard all of these types of rumblings.

Trying to ignore that the Titans came from somewhere else is never going to go away so start dealing with it.

Well on that note

Trying to ignore that the Titans are in TENNESSEE now is never going to go away so start dealing with it.

I became a Titans fan when they moved to Tennessee.

First live game (and only live game) I’ve seen was when they were still in Memphis. I’ve never been too interested in the previous history of the Titans, but I have to say these uniforms, the anniversary, and even this blog have made me more proud of the history we came from.

And to be honest, with the loss of Steve, I don’t think it could have come at a better time.

Do you really think that people who follow the Dallas Cowboys or Pittsburgh Steelers care about Dallas or Pittsburgh?? Those that never lived there??

by earlers on Aug 10, 2009 7:19 PM CDT reply actions

Yes, if they ever want to go to a game.

You don’t fully support the franchise if you won’t buy anything with Tennessee on it. Plain and simple. You are some hybrid of fan and hater that is completely useless.

Interesting that I’ve been a fan of the team longer than you BUT I’m the useless fan? Yeah right…

by earlers on Aug 10, 2009 9:23 PM CDT up reply actions

When did i ever say how long i was a fan of the team?

You assume too much. And you are the useless fan because you claim loyalty to a franchise when you won’t even buy things that have their current name on them. Please.

So how long have you been a fan??

Go ahead and make something up about how long you’ve been a fan.

I buy plenty of merchandise with Titans on it. It’s not hard either. Heck the Jerseys don’t even say Tennessee!

Please get off your high horse.

The elitism in here is stifling.

That's what I thought...

Funny, I’m the elitist but you called me useless. I never questioned your loyalty…you questioned mine. Yeah, u were shocked that you couldn’t find the name Tennessee on the entire uniform. You can admit it..

On the sideline caps.

It did look really weird. I could have seen “Tennessee Oilers” but “Houston Oilers” was entirely strange.

Do our sideline caps not say Tennessee on em?

smash will find me a picture I am sure.

Seeing Kenny Britt in a Houston Oilers tshirt really gave me pause as well.

so seeing the oilers uniforms was ok, i didnt get offended cus they wore it, i was like hey for us old timer fans that have been through alot of ups and downs over the decades it was kind of nice for a change,
