Paul Kuharsky doesn't think that Steve Slaton or Chris Johnson will suffer from sophomore slumps. I would agree with both in principle, but one is on the verge of becoming a diva (if he's not already there) and the other is not. The NFL is littered with the failed careers of guys that had all the talent in the world but were head cases and couldn't keep it together. I'm not saying that he's there, but if Johnson continues down the path of narcissism that he's started down, he could be a cautionary tale one day as well.

Jake over at Battle Red Blog prediciting that CJ is going to flame out. Feel free to head over there and voice your displeasure.

Well, for one thing

He really seems to be focused a lot more on personal accomplishments than team, if you go by his comments earlier this offseason.

Plus, the guy cried and whined about not being named rookie of the year. He is a diva – but he’s also got the skills to back it up. Jake’s not saying he’s going to flame out, he’s saying that he might flame out if he keeps up his whiny diva act. We prefer Steve for obvious reasons – but another part of it is – someone asked Slaton what his favorite TD dance was – his answer was “handing the ball to the referee.”

Also – who led the AFC in total yards from scrimmage? Steve Slaton. Did he even utter so much as a PEEP about not being named ROY – no, but he sure could make a good case.

So, you guys will now all get upset with your internet bravado – but Jake wasn’t saying exactly what you think he’s saying… and CJ is kind of a diva, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing as long as he continues to back it up on the field.

I mean, what Jake said is far, far less ridiculous than you guys calling the Texans “Andre Johnson” because you think it’s a one-man team.

Calling Chris Johnson a 'diva'

for not being a mute and having a little fun is pretty ridiculous. I mean, it’s not like he’s drag racing Ferari’s illegally or anything.

CJ is certainly confident in his abilities but he hasn’t gotten in a lick of trouble or upset a single teammate or opponent, so where’s the beef?

He really seems to be focused a lot more on personal accomplishments than team, if you go by his comments earlier this offseason.

because he was joking around on twitter with his teammates? also, please describe a situation where a running back’s personal accomplishments can NOT be helpful to the team.

Plus, the guy cried and whined about not being named rookie of the year. He is a diva – but he’s also got the skills to back it up. Jake’s not saying he’s going to flame out, he’s saying that he might flame out if he keeps up his whiny diva act. We prefer Steve for obvious reasons – but another part of it is – someone asked Slaton what his favorite TD dance was – his answer was "handing the ball to the referee."

so chris johnson has some swagger and thinks he was the best rookie on offense last year. so slaton is boring. what do any of these things have to do with on field performance? zero. that’s why his whole post was stupid.

Also – who led the AFC in total yards from scrimmage? Steve Slaton. Did he even utter so much as a PEEP about not being named ROY – no, but he sure could make a good case.

also, who did slaton have to split carries with? no one. if CJ had only had some has been like ahman green to fight over carries with, his stats would have been much, much higher. he even tied slaton for tds even though every time the titans sniffed the goal line lendale got the ball. slaton never made a peep about offensive rookie of the year because no one else did either— not a single vote.

So, you guys will now all get upset with your internet bravado – but Jake wasn’t saying exactly what you think he’s saying… and CJ is kind of a diva, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing as long as he continues to back it up on the field.

we know exactly what his post was saying. he was trying to equate a few playful twitters and some flashy celebrations with “being a head case” and “narcissism” and suggested that somehow all that nonsense might affect his career on the field. stupid.

as a side note, does anybody want to list some super talented RB’s that have littered the NFL with their failed careers because they “couldn’t hold it together”? bottom line, talent is pretty much all it takes at RB. that’s why RB is easily the single most successful rookie position on the field.

I mean, what Jake said is far, far less ridiculous than you guys calling the Texans "Andre Johnson" because you think it’s a one-man team.

ok that’s fair. the texans probably are more like a 5 man team.

4.5 man team

OK then

maybe sometimes I’ll mix it up and call you “Owen Daniels”. Happy?

Pete Rose was actually banned from baseball for teaching Jeff Francoeur how to play. He made up the gambling stuff to hide his shame.

Swagger!

There’s a massive difference between swagger and whining. CJ has/does both… and that’s fine – he’s super talented.

But for you guys to say that you can’t see why public whining might be construed as diva behavior is just disingenuous.

also, please describe a situation where a running back’s personal accomplishments can NOT be helpful to the team.

Come on, man it’s like you’re not reading what I’m typing. Of course individual accomplishments help the team – but that’s not at all in the context of what we’re talking about. We’re talking about whether or not CJ exudes diva behavior.

Yea he's totally a diva

Thats why his teammates hate him and hes causing problems in the locker room and complaining about not getting enough carries….

Wait. What? I’m sorry that he has fun and sends those twitters from workouts with his other teammates. I’m sorry that he, like anyone, wanted to win rookie of the year. I’m sorry that a few TD celebrations means that he is going to ruin his career.

I’m also sorry that Slaton could barely beat Johnson in yards and TDs even when LenDale took 15 touchdowns from him.

Not sure what you're talking about

His twitters have nothing to do with anything. His whining about the ROY – again – is what I’m talking about. It’s diva behavior. Is he a full blown diva? Not yet. He’s young and I think he’ll mature because there’s only so much that Jeff Fisher will tolerate. Also don’t recall saying anything about his teammates having a problem with him. I’m sure they love the guy.

For the record – I loved the bongo thing. Thought it was hilarious. That doesn’t bother me.

true

that was someone else who brought up the tweets.

I was just responding in general to the quote and whatnot

I didn’t have anyone targeted specifically. I bet you that half the rookies went “Man i wish i had won rookie of the year screw Matt Ryan” but they aren’t all divas. Slaton also knew he had no chance because the people who choose factor in stats but most definitely factor in team wins.

People need to distinguish between “diva” and “fun”

What about a "Fun diva"?

Haha that would be fun.

I’d also like to take this time to point out (just for a friendly little punch at houston) that Houston has less prime time games than Oakland, Cleveland, Buffalo, and San Francisco!
Also, Detroit has just as many prime time games (Although the Thanksgiving game doesn’t really count, since it’s automatically given)

It doesn't bother me.

Chris does like to call attention to himself, I can see how that would bother some people, division rivals more so.

As long as he keeps breaking off huge runs against them, they can call him whatever names they like.

by hartley on Jul 29, 2009 2:14 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

He didn't do jack against the Texans last year.

Granted, that’s because we were keying on him – but he was held in check in both games and never broke anything longer than 16 yards. (Just for clarity’s sake)

Averaged almost 5 yards a pop over both games

can’t blame him for only getting 29 carries…

Im glad that you "prefer Steve for obvious reasons"

because you can keep him, we’ll stick with CJ.

We’ll see what you say about this argument after this season…. or even by week 4.

this whole thing

is just a sneaky way to get steve slaton’s name mentioned in the same sentence as chris johnson’s. don’t be fooled.
