State of the Tennessee Titans Roster: Cornerbacks
One of the topics we have talked about at length this offseason has been the lack of depth at the corner position. Cortland Finnegan is one of the best corners in the league. Nick Harper is a solid veteran opposite Finnegan, but there are some big concerns about his durability. He will be 35 in September and missed significant time last season because of injury.
Hopefully Finnegan and Harper stay healthy, but this is the NFL, so odds are one of them will miss some time next season. Who steps in behind them is one of the biggest questions for the 2009 Titans. Currently they have Cary Williams and DeMarcus Faggins listed as the back-up corners. Either of those names excite anyone? Yeah, me neither.
The interesting thing to me is this has been the State of Corner since all of the reserves left in free agency, but the only thing the Titans did to help out was draft Ryan Mouton and Jason McCourty in the third and sixth rounds respectively. One of those two guys is going to need to show something in camp to give me a good feeling about the position.

We may add more depth...
once teams make their training camp cuts.

although....
harp is a former colt, ive forgiven him for that, and if he wasnt injured so much last year he would have contributed alot more, but i think hes got a couple more years left in him (anybody know how long we have him for off the top of their head). hes a good cover guy, lockdown tackles and is smart, so i like our two guys coming out of training camp. being from hou, got to see alot of faggins suiting up for the texans, he may not be the greatest but he did start alot for the texans except for his occasional blow coverages hes an ok backup. but one more nice CB would be good.

This is Harper’s last year on his contract, most likely he’s gone unless we want him to stick around for one more year for the veteran min. to help mentor his replacement. I actually am excited to about Cary Williams he has all the abilities to be a good corner in this league he just needs to stay healthy. McGinnis and Finny has said that Williams should be the person to watch to be this year’s break out player. DB Coach Robertson said as long as he has learned the playbook and techniques he’ll be fine. Cary has bulked up this off season and been at BSP every day this year, look for him to make an impact if he stays healthy.
