The Top Five Players the Tennessee Titans Cannot Afford to Lose

This conversation got brought up on 104.5 The Zone this morning, and I thought it would be a good one to kick around here.  Paul Kuharsky gave his 5 in this order:

  1. Chris Johnson
  2. Kerry Collins
  3. Michael Roos
  4. Cortland Finnegan
  5. Kyle Vanden Bosch

There isn't much of a debate to me that these are the 5 guys, but I think the order is debatable.

Click through the jump to see my order.

Star-divide

Here is my order:

  1. Chris Johnson- This one is not even debatable.  Everything the offense does runs through the threat of CJ.
  2. Cortland Finnegan- Finnegan is one of the best corners in the league. The biggest reason he is #2 because the drop off from him to the guy that would replace him is HUGE.
  3. Kerry Collins- He is the perfect quarterback for this offense.
  4. Kyle Vanden Bosch- Before you come with something about how he missed most of the year last year and they won 13 games, that was a different defense that included Albert Haynesworth.  They are going to need Boom King on the field this season.
  5. Michael Roos- Roos is not easily replaced by any means, but if he went down the Titans would either move David Stewart to left tackle or Mike Munchak will develop another Pro Bowler.

Leave your list in the comments.

Keith Bulluck has gotta be somewhere on this list.

1. Chris Johnson
2. Michael Roos
3. Cortland Finnegan
4. Keith Bulluck
5. Boom King

I think Rob Bironas could also have been included in this list. He had 127 out of the 375 points we scored last year.

We could lose Kerry and still win 9-10 games, IMO.

1. Chris Johnson
2. Michael Roos
3. Cortland Finnegan
4. Michael Griffin
5. Kyle Vanden Bosch
5a. Jason Jones (he hasn’t gotten there yet, but he better if we’re going to win the AFC South again)

Speaking of deep into the playoffs....

If we’re going to get to the super bowl, here are three people that need to perform well:

1) Brad Brown
2) Chuck Cecil
3) Jeff Fisher

by palpacino on Jul 24, 2009 2:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Boom King is doooope, but...

I know KVB is a fan and MCM favorite, but I still think our scheme and rotation would survive … I think Kerry is important too, but our running game would really suffer without Ahmard.

1. Courtland Finnegan
2. Michael Roos
3. Chris Johsnon
4. Ahmard Hall
5. Kerry Collins

by kazukirecords on Jul 24, 2009 2:18 PM CDT reply actions

Ahmard Hall comes in somewhere around

#32.

IMO...

1. Chris Johnson – No CJ = No Offense
2. Michael Roos – No Roos = KC gets sacked numerous times in a game
3. Cortland Finnegan – we lack depth at CB
4. Keith Bulluck – leader of the defense
5. Michael Griffin – stops run and covers well
6. Eugene Amano – because this is my list

No KVB because our D-Line is so good and deep. No KC because VY can replace him, IMO.

Strange as it is...

I disagree on CJ. The combo of LDW and Javon Ringer would also be VERY effective, if wholly different.

You can't be serious...

CJ was voted to the Pro Bowl his rookie year and can take it to the house on any given play. No one knows anything about how well Ringer will do in the NFL. Hell, for all we know, he might not see the field this year. To say that our running game would be just as effective with an untested rookie in place of CJ is crazy.

by DoofusOfErasmus on Jul 24, 2009 4:27 PM CDT up reply actions

I didn't say that it would be as effective.

I said it would be effective. In fact, it was VERY effective with LDW and the mighty Chris Brown, no? It was. Not as good as last year, I agree, but still productive by any reasonable measure. And I think it’s easy to predict that Ringer will at least be able to put in Chris Brown-type performances.

The difference w/out CJ would have to come in the passing game, but this year I think that would actually be possible. Last year… not so much.

The guys that they truly cannot afford to lose are guys where the whole position group falls apart if the are out:
 - Finnegan
 - Roos
 - Griffin (probably the least replaceable guy on the field IMHO)
 - J. Gage (a replaceable guy on any other team, but the only consistent known quantity @ WR for the Titans)
 - And yes, probably KC.

Keith Bulluck has to top this list!

1. Keith Bulluck
2. Chris Johnson
3. Cortland Finnegan
4. Michael Roos
5. David Thornton
6. Kyle Vanden Bosch

No Kerry Collins because I too believe that VY is ready to return and prove himself. Even Jeff Fisher believes Vince is the future of the Titans. When he’s truly ready, he’s going to be a force to be dealt with!

While Kyle Vanden Bosch is a great player, he missed games last year and the Titans continued to win without him. That’s why he made 6th on my list.

The Titans ride on it’s defense! We have to keep our defense in tact to make it to the big game. KEITH BULLUCK, Cortland Finnegan and David Thornton are essential!

by loshae on Jul 24, 2009 4:36 PM CDT reply actions

I hate to say it

but…..we went 10-6 without CJ and LenDale had 1000 plus yards so i think that LenDale and CJ both go hand in hand…

by Titansfan9 on Jul 24, 2009 4:45 PM CDT reply actions

As an outsider

I’m tempted to say that there should be another O-lineman in that group. You guys have such a great line, and your run game and QB play depends entirely on it.

KVB is a little older, so I might bump him for another O-lineman. I also might try to squeeze Griffin in there.

Interesting topic, for sure.

VY wasn't anywhere near ready to return at the end of last season.

Until he’s shown that he can pass more accurately and read defenses, KC definitely belongs on that list.

yeah michael griffin goes unnoticed

he’s overshadowed by other 1st rd picks (VY, Pacman, CJ)

Top 5 players titans cant afford to lose

1. Cortland finnegan-getting better every year, developing into a shutdown corner, extremely difficult to replace!
2. Michael roos-he and the rest of the o-line is the reason kerry collins did as well as he did.
3. Chris johnson-showed the kind of skills that normally result in a hall of fame career. Reminds me of marshall faulk and ladainian tomlinson
4. Kieth bullock-consistant year in and year out, his numbers were down but the rest of the defensive numbers were up! The leader of this team, the best linebacker in titans history
5. Chris hope-good for 85 to 100 tackles and 4 int. Per year if healthy, leader of the secondary, quietly one of the top nfl safeties

Be careful lad,

Typos of Keith Bulluck’s name has caused civil war on this site. I myself was shot in the leg with a BB gun by Gram and Hal Driving a 82 Regal, while walking out of the Wendy’s on Gallatin Road near Trinity Lane. Spilled my soda and droped my Baconator.

I'd say

Kerry Collins- I’m not sure i trust Vince.
Chris Johnson- Provided he doesn’t become Chris “Dos Ocho”
Bulluck- We need his towel stomping prowess/heart for our defense
Finnegan- Super corner skills
Griffin- I think our secondary staying is more important than D-line as we always have quality lineman
Roos- Every team needs a great LT

Who doesn't want to be a promiscuous dope fiend?

by BonzosMontreaux on Jul 25, 2009 8:02 AM CDT reply actions

MY TOP 5

1.) Johnson – the difference with CJ out is crazy (see baltimore loss)
2.) Finnegan – our corner depth is a huge concern for me going into this year.
3.) Griffin – will be in the Ed Reed, Bob Sanders Class before his career is over.
4.) KVB – older yes, but again the depth on the ends are a big question mark without Albert commanding double teams.
5.) Bulluck – Hopefully this man has a career year so the FO can’t let him walk.

by Air McNair 9 on Jul 25, 2009 5:22 PM CDT reply actions

for real:

1. Chris Johnson (by a mile)
2. Cortland Finnegan
3. Kerry Freaking Collins
4. Michael Griffin
5. Nick Harper

I have confidence in our ability to fill in a guy here or there on both lines. But our secondary is paper thin this season, with only 5 proven guys in a system that plays nickel at least half the time. It would be a huge problem if any of those guys fell because this season we face, among others, the steelers, the colts x2, andre johnson x2, the patriots, the cardinals, and the chargers. that’s half of our games where the secondary is going to have to be at their best. i really hope we can find someone else once the roster start getting trimmed.

Funny

I don’t recall Andre Johnson running for 100 yards on the Titans twice last season, and I don’t remember Andre Johnson blocking for the guy who ran for 100 yards on the Titans twice last season.

Keith Bulluck.........

seriously underrated, so much that it pisses me off that ppl dont realize this guys talent and importance to this defense, and its gonna piss me off even more if we don’t resign him after this coming season, he needs to retire in tennessee.

1.CJ – set the bar pretty high for himself, but luckily he sounds likes hes looking to raise it even higher, because he sets the tone for our passing game. although i do like what im seein from lendale, he wants to play.
2.Collins – did a real good job runnin the O last year, but with the weapons were putting around him this year he should be able to step up production, although once again, i wanna see the second serving of VY. i think he can step up and show us all something we aren’t ready for but had a sample of before. greatness.
3.KEITH BULLUCK – plain and simple, im more comfortable when he’s in the lineup then when he’s out.
4.Cort – it’s really hard picking someone from our secondary, they all put up. but corts our guy we need to shut down every weeks top WR, can’t wait to see what hes got this year…and coming from houston, can’t wait to see him match up with andre j twice again this year.
5.WR’s and D-Lineman – not that we cant afford to lose, but we can’t afford for them not to show up… i wanna see some more TD’s through the air, and i can’t wait to see all those D-L’s bein thrown at opposing O lines wearin em down
