State of the Tennessee Titans Roster: Tight End
Tight end is one position on this roster that will actually be interesting to watch in training camp. Bo Scaife will enter camp as the number one guy, mostly just because he has been here for the longest and has shown some flashes of being a good tight end. We have had the Scaife debate here quite a few times so I won't waste much time on it, but if he is going to live up to being one of the top 5 tight ends in the game, which is how the Titans are paying him, he is going to have to not disappear for games at a time like he has done the rest of his career.
Alge Crumpler should enter camp as the #2. He proved to be a disappointment last year only catching 24 passes for 257 yards and 1 touchdown (Well, that and fumbling away the Titans' shot at moving on in the playoffs). Alge is still a solid blocking tight end and figures to move even more towards that role in 2009.
It will be interesting to see what they can get from Jared Cook. He is a guy with a TON of upside, see the highlight video after the jump, but it will probably take him a while to become the blocker the coaching staff will want him to be, but don't be surprised to see some packages with him in them early in season. He is a guy that can present a lot of match-up problems.
Craig Stevens will probably need a really, really good camp to make this roster.

Stevens is a lock for he 53 man roster, IMO
Crumpler is older (and by definition more injury-prone), and if he went down and Stevens wasn’t wasn’t around we’d have nobody to block at that position… no way Fisher lets that happen. I mean even when we had Troupe it was largely because we also had Erron Kinney on roster as well.
My read on it: they’ll carry 4 TEs (Scaife, Crumpler, Cook and Stevens), then probably carry one less WR than planned because Cook can be an emergency WR in addition to the packages where he’s already out there.

My thought exactly. They knew what Stevens was when they drafted him. A very solid blocking TE. That’s something they value highly. In addition to that, Crumpler is old and Scaife doesn’t have a long term deal in place.
IMO, Alge was not a disappointment last year...
except for the fluke fumble in the last game, I think he contributed a lot to the success of the running game last year. And although the receptions were down, I thought he caught balls when it counted (on critical plays).
Go Titans!
And he's DannoE's favorite Titan!

Agreed
and Alge wasn’t the only one in that playoff game that ruined our chances of moving on…
Lendale’s fumble..
KVBs off-side penalty – next play they get a TD
REFS
There's a lot you can add to that
CJ’s injury

Didn't mean
them as a whole game, they did really well… just that certain play where we all knew that was a damn delay of game!
Yeah, they did screw that one up. They also missed a safety on CJ.
I just don’t want us to turn into Stampede Blue blaming the officials for every single bad thing that happens to our team.

doesn't look like
they signed him to catch, either, from these #’s…
They should cut him before any of the others, and keep an extra WR.
Why?
As much as Crumpler probably deserved to lose his job after that fiasco last year, he’s still a MUCH better player than any of the WRs at the bottom of the Titans’ rotation. Those guys are almost universally useless.

cuz
we have a lot of young talent at that position, ALL of which will be more effective than Crump 2 years from now when he’s knitting on his front porch.
He had a two-year deal.
This is the second year. Next year, your starting TEs will be Stevens and Cooke. Stevens in Crumpler’s current role, and Cooke in Scaife’s.

Bo won't be around next year.
Once they see what Jared Cook brings to the table, Bo can go be average for someone else.
While being grossly overpaid

one advantage of being franchised...
we can cut him and owe him NOTHING.
