Tennessee Titans Morning Links: The Predictable Step Backwards Edition
Major Adams, who representes VY, says that the QB's comments should in no way be construed as demanding a trade.
"Vince’s desire has always been to compete for the starting quarterback job in Tennessee," Adams said. "Even before they drafted him, they asked him if he thought he could compete for the starting role, and he said yes. He has always been a starter and that is his mindset.
"He has not asked to be traded, and in fact, is going to an event at Bud Adams’ ranch this weekend. Plus, he was in there working out [Monday. If he didn’t have a desire to stay there, he wouldn’t be doing any of that."
Terry McCormick echos some of the comments we heard on MCM yesterday, and defends VY's statements as a sign that he's sill competitive and not pouting like he did much of last year.
Paul K says VY would be wise to dump the inexperienced family friend Major Adams and hook up with a real agent who won't sugar coat his situation.
In lighter news, Michael Roos is helping build up a very cool, and often overlooked part of Nashville: the historic Germantown district.

He probably does need a new agent
But he’s not sugar coating anything. This “play me or trade me” talk is a bit amusing, since it is very easy to simply look at Vince’s words and tone and see that he made no such claim. He may very well have those thoughts in mind, but unless you load his quote too much and take it out of context, there’s no “play me or trade me” in that interview at all.

Then what does it mean?
“If them guys don’t want me to be in there man, it’s time for me to make a career change for myself,” Young said. “Because the fact is I’m ready to play ball and if they’re not ready for me to play ball, somebody is.”
Oh, I get it…he’s just making a statement that if the Titans are not ready for him to play, then there is a team out there that is. Just making a statement. Don’t mean nothin by it. Nothing to see here.
It’s amazing how this guy just keeps on getting misunderstood.

He talked about how he loves it at Tennessee
A part that is always conspicuously absent in every quote from the interview. He said clearly that it’s up to Fisher to make the decision and he would abide by it, but of course he would need to make a career change. A career change can mean many things, like simply leaving after the season is over and he would be undoubtedly cut. The word “trade” was never uttered, nor was there a very threatening tone to what he said. He just stated he wanted to play.
I’m also amused the question that the radio station gave to him is never included. Typical media once again.
I’m not here to try to defend Vince as the best interviewer out there. I agree he should have not said anything, if indeed he knew full well that he can’t win with the media anymore. But the extent that his interview has been blown up by everyone is pretty silly, a testament to the boredom of the summer in the world of football and the sensationalist nature media like ESPN have stooped to over the years. If you just look at the interview objectively, it really is “nothing to see here.” It’s a non-story, a very uninteresting interview from a backup QB who wants to play.

I don't think
it’s as much of a non-story as some people are saying, and that it only is getting play because it’s summer and nothing is going on. If this happens in Week 8, I bet it gets just as much play. It may not lead Sportscenter, but it’d be on there, they’d still ask Schlereth and Trent Dilfer for their opinions, they’d still say they think VY isn’t a capable NFL starter, etc., etc.
It’s getting more play than it maybe should because of how he said “them guy”. It sounded very callous and like he was a separate entity from the team, and it looks like to me quite a bit at times as weil.
It’s also getting play because he speaks English like a moron. I heard a couple ESPN shows mention that and just rip him apart for it.
I don’t think they need to include the question because the question doesn’t matter. How would it help to hear the question? It was obviously a question related to his playing time, mentality of not starting, or something along those lines. Even if the question was super-infammatory like “If you don’t play would you want to be traded?” it’s all about his answer, so I see no reason to include the question in the soundbite.

The question is always important
Of course, that doesn’t excuse how people give answers, but it’s very informing on how they formed their answers. Consider that sometimes athletes get pegged for “guaranteeing” victory for statements like, “Yeah, I think we’ll win.” When you hear the question, it’s often a very simple, “So, do you think you guys will win?” On the one hand, they should be more wary of the media. On the other, it’s a pretty dumb question; of course every athlete is going to go into a game thinking they will win, and it’s a pretty unenlightening answer for them to merely say that they think they’ll win. That doesn’t mean he’s talking crap about the other team or “guaranteeing” anything. Context is ALWAYS important.
“It’s getting more play than it maybe should because of how he said "them guy". It sounded very callous and like he was a separate entity from the team, and it looks like to me quite a bit at times as weil.”
Vince always says that. “Them guys” is actually pretty affectionate for him. If people are reading into “them guys,” they are fishing. Simple as that.
“It’s also getting play because he speaks English like a moron. I heard a couple ESPN shows mention that and just rip him apart for it.”
Steve McNair wasn’t exactly the shining example of fluid speech, now was he :). In any case, that’s fine; rip him for his bad English. But to insinuate that he’s threatening the organization is going way beyond the evidence.
Furthermore, I agree that it would still be a story in the season, but not because it should be; it’s because, like I said, the media loves to be sensationalist and find crap to talk about. I

My question:
Is Major Adams a former military major OR is that his name?
I think Colonel Sanders was a Colonel at one point, I think. =-)

Harland "Colonel" Sanders
never made it past private in the Army. Later, he was named an honorary “Kentucky Colonel” by the governor when he was known locally for his fried chicken, but before KFC became a company.
In related news, I watch too much History Channel programing.
I have no idea on Major Adams.

A name and sorta
Major Adams is his name, not a former ranking.
As to Colonel Sanders, he was a member of the Kentucky Colonels, so it is more an honorary title than an actual rank.

Oops
I could be wrong about Major Adams. Turns out the Major Adams I found on the net is not the same one that represents Vince Young. He is also an agent though…just not in sports. I am still guessing it’s just a name though.

It's his army title
His real name is Major Sir Hamilton John Goold-Adams
Born in the town of Jamesbrook in County Cork, Ireland, Goold-Adams was apprenticed on a training ship until he decided to join the British Army and was commissioned in the Royal Scots Regiment, serving principally in southern Africa, where he achieved the rank of captain in 1885 and major in 1895. He was made Deputy Commissioner and later Lieutenant-Governor of the Orange River Colony under Governor Alfred Milner, 1st Viscount Milner from 1901 to 1907. He was made CMG in 1902 and GCMG in 1907. He also fought in the Second Boer War, where he was Mentioned in Despatches and commanded the Town Guard in the Siege of Mafeking.
He returned to England in 1911 where he married a Canadian named Elsie Riordon on 4 July. Later that year he was appointed British High Commissioner to Cyprus. In 1914 he was made Governor of Queensland, and arrived in Brisbane just before the election of Queensland’s first majority Labor government, under Premier T. J. Ryan. He occasionally disapproved of Labor’s policies and majority appointments to the Legislative Council of Queensland.
Returning to England after his retirement, Goold-Adams contracted pleurisy on board ship, and died in Cape Town, South Africa in 1920.
Interesting hire for an agent, I must say.

No wonder
Vince is getting so much negative publicity! His agent is a militant zombie.
