MCM Overtime: Memphis Grizzlies no.2 Pick in the NBA Draft... Who ya got?

Olajuwon_84_400_medium

I'm a Grizzlies fan, even though they make it damned hard to be sometimes, so I'll be keeping an eye on the NBA draft at the bar  while roughing up the neighborhood know-it-alls at Trivia Night.  If the Griz keep their pick, the hands on favorites are Spaniard Ricky Rubio  and Uconn's Hasheem Thabeet.

Shout out to 3 Shades of Blue, the best Grizzlies blog on the web.

If you were Chris Wallace, who would you pick?

(note: David Stern had one of the all-time underrated mustaches back in the day.)

I'd rather have Thabeet than Rubio

But I’d prefer to trade down most of all

It's gotta be Rubio

Thabeet is not a #2 quality pick!!!! Rubio could be the next Steve Nash, and in an NBA without a hand check, PGs are WAY more valuable than slow, awkward Centers with no Offensive game. Rubio is at worst a good PG and at best a revolutionary PG. Memphis will never be great due to the structure of the NBA, but with Rubio they could be damn exciting Phoenix Suns style. What are they with Thabeet?

The Grizzlies lack a star

Thabeet is not going to be a star. Everybody knows what he is going to be. He’s gonna be the second coming of Dikembe Mutombo. That’s not bad. But not good enough for the Grizzlies.

They should’ve picked Ricky Rubio. The kid has tremendous upside. Steve Nash upside. He will also attract more fans than Thabeet.

Well, atleast, the Grizzlies can play this song in the arena whenever Thabeet’s name is called.

Ricky isn't going to attract more fans in Memphis than Thabeet

Just won’t happen. Not only is the franchise horrible and no one wants to go to games, Memphians aren’t going to start going to games to see some Spanish PG they have never heard of. The Grizz need a big man anyways, especially after letting Gasol go for pretty much nada.

now with less meyton panning.

I thought Marc Gasol is the big man of the future

anyways good luck to the grizzlies… GO LAKERS!!!

Lack a star?

So you dont think Rudy Gay and OJ Mayo have any star quality? I mean these guys are good and YOUNG. Just having one of them would be the best scoring threat the Grizzlies have ever had. But having both gives this team tremendous upside. I say they play Gasol and Thabeet together with those two and Conley. This could be a good team if they can keep them together. (doubtful)

right now, no

though i went and saw the grizz @ the celtics this past season and gay especially could be a star one day….just probably not in memphis. at this point, it’s a black hole and it will remain so until something changes. like everything. though if thabeet can learn to score every once in a while they might really have something. but probably not.

When West and Brown were running the Grizz, the team was heading in the right direction

Thats the only time I’ve felt they’ve had good management and coaching. Like you said, its just a black hole, a drain of talent. Can’t retain the good players, can’t keep em happy with horrible records and not giving them the supporting cast.

gay especially could be a star one day….just probably not in memphis

sad but true. And its not just gay, but for all the potential stars that have come through the grizz.

my definition of star

is a player who you can build a team around (e.g. Kobe, Lebron, Shaq, KG, Nash, CP, D-Wade, T-Mac, Duncan, etc.). I’m sorry to say but Rudy and OJ are not in that level yet.

My opinion is Thabeet would never be a player you can build a team around. He is gonna be one heck of a complimentary player though.

Why do the Grizzlies not have an SB Nation blog?

They are one of three teams that doesn’t have one.

how many reasons do you need?

.311 franchise win percentage
0 playoff wins (3 appearances, all sweeps)
3 seasons with 30+ wins
1 all star team appearance (by gasol, who they basically gave away to the lakers)
one of the most inappropriate mascots in all of sports, second perhaps only to the utah jazz
chris wallace is one of the worst gms in basketball

but hey, they were the first nba team with a website!

they also won 3 nfl titles in the 50's,

and had barry sanders, one of the most electrifying nfl players of all time. so at least they have history and fans of the past who could give birth to the fans of today. there’s a difference in being bad and being irrelevant. the grizz basically shouldn’t even exist. detroit is also a major pro sports town, so the interest will always be there even if the franchise sucks for a decade or two. memphis couldn’t even show up to watch the oilers during the transitional period.
