Tennessee Titans Morning Links: Career Change Edition
Only one link today, and it's a doosy. Check-out Vince Young's comments to a Baltimore TV station (audio here):
"If them guys don't want me to be in there man, it's time for me to make a career change for myself," Young said. "Because the fact is I'm ready to play ball and if they're not ready for me to play ball, somebody is."
Now that the slower period of the off-season is upon us your help in finding out of the way Titans stories is more important than ever. I thought this was a big deal at first, but...
Really, what should he say? “Yeah, I definitely deserve to ride the bench for the rest of my career.”
He’s an NFL QB and he should want to start somewhere. I don’t think this changes things much. The only way he’s a Titan after this year is if he takes a pay cut, and that’s whether he’s a starter or not.
he shouldn't say anything
he promised, remember? if someone has to tell you, in the media, that they will no longer stir shit up, in the media, chances are good that you shouldn’t believe them.
he’s a back up qb who needs a miracle to be anything more ever again. a miracle like him not being dumb as a brick. a miracle like him ascending to the level of a mediocre nfl QB. even if he wins the spot by default (again) if kerry were to go down, there is no evidence that he will do anything but showcase once more that he is not a real nfl qb. i gave vince the benefit of the doubt for a loooooooooong time. but it’s the start of his 4th year and he’s still a petulant little baby.
he had this team in the palm of his hand after his rookie year and he was lazy, didn’t learn anything, didn’t improve, and somewhere along the way, he also lost every attribute that made him an attractive pick in the first place. no leadership, no confidence, no wow factor, bitching at the media, comatose on the sidelines. and now he’s added being a whiny prima donna to his bag of tricks. faaaaantastic.
The Dual Threat, Official Enforcer/Stat Geek of MCM.
Whiny Primadonna?
I don’t really disagree with anything you said except I don’t think his comments make him a whiny prima donna. I think any QB in the league who felt that they can start would’ve said the same thing. I didn’t feel like he got petulant about it. He didn’t seem to hate on the Titans any. He just stated that he wants to start. Good. He should want to start. My main thing is that it’s hard to get fired up about a comment that is pretty much just a restatement of the facts. If he’s not our starting QB he’s going to get cut. That was true before he said anything and it’s true now.
Besides a lack of proper english,
this story is fairly benign. He knows that if he doesn’t win the starting job back, he will be playing somewhere else next year, becuase his ass will get CUT! At this point, he has little to no trade value. I am actually encouraged that he made these statements, as it indicates that he is starting to speak with the media, and maybe getting his pea brained head on right. He’s no mental giant, but still has plenty of football left in him.
Staunch Defender of the Round Mound -
Obviously, the expected thing would be for VY to simply state that his sole intent is on winning back the starting job with the Titans. The problem is that if he’s already thinking enough about going elsewhere to voice it publicly to a TV station, it puts a ton of focus on his work effort once training camp opens.
The slightest bit of slacking or pouting will surely bring these comments back into the spotlight, and portray him as wanting nothing more than a ride out of town. The best way for him to get that, however, is to shut up, work hard, and attract some interest from around the league.
More fun than a stick to the face!

Before everyone goes crazy
Listen to the audio. It makes this sound a lot less inflammatory than the statement above.
Disagree
While I’m not saying it IS inflammatory, it sounded about what I would expect, and it’s short-sighted and immature, considering his position. 1) His supposed “media silence” didn’t even last until training camp. 2) While there are other issues, I think generally the coaching staff’s issues with VY and why he isn’t on the field can be summed up with two words: maturity and judgment/decision-making. This once again falls under “bad decision”. Now it isn’t a HORRIBLE decision, just like making it rain at his own charity birthday party thrown in his own honor isn’t a HORRIBLE decision, but they’re all starting to really, really add up. The fact is his questionable/bad decisions far outweigh his good decisions, especially since he lost the starting job.
If this was the first “incident” of the off-season, I would say “meh. No biggie.” but it’s not. It’s just the most recent in a long line. So it’s not unreasonable to look at how Vince Young has handled not being the starter as a whole and say “He is immature and at this point doesn’t possess the necessary judgment to be a successful NFL QB.”

I don't know about this:
"He is immature and at this point doesn’t possess the necessary judgment to be a successful NFL QB."
But (gasp) I agree with all the rest.
That guy shoots himself in the foot more often than anyone else I've ever heard of.

"You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one."
That might have been a smart move from his perspective.
Let’s face it. He knows his image is pretty much beyond repair here in TN. So, he and Major Adams have probably just started a campaign to “help him save face” when he gets cut later on. Whether or not it’s too late to save face now is another discussion in itself.
we drafted 2 top 10 overall picks with a collective IQ of my shoe size.

he wants change then change should be in his future. some redirection will do him good. see ya Vince and watch out for that door it swings quickly around here
i agree with hal.
dont go away mad just go away!! wonder if hes going to write a note to each individual player and put it on their locker when hes on his way out like he did on his way in lol.
Not a big deal
I respect the posters on this board more than any other. The majority of the posts appear that Young does not have any support from the fans (here, at least). Maybe VY realizes he needs to go somewhere else. I don’t agree with the assessment of his lack of ability to play football nor do I agree with the idea that he can’t improve and play again. Right now, our QB was declared washed up and out of football and look at him now. The only way that this guy doesn’t play somewhere is if he pulls a Pacman and takes himself out of football for good.
And another thing,
Isn’t this what Kerry Collins said at the end of the season? He threatened to go to another team or retire if he wasn’t signed as a starter this season. KC took us to the playoffs – one and done. VY took us to the playoffs – one and done. I believe we can plug either one into the game and win.
MAN, I can’t WAIT!! I’m even excited about pre-season.
Kerry
wasn’t under contract. That makes a BIG difference.

It's a zero sum game for VY
If he says “I’m just happy to be here” he gets ripped for not having any heart. If he says “I just want to play (which is what he said) then he is a selfish, arrogant baby. Is there anything he can say or do that doesn’t piss you people off? WTF is wrong with someone saying they just want to play? I just think there is NOTHING going on this time of year so benign statements like this turn into fodder for discussion during slow news months when this ISN”T EVEN NEWSWORTHY!
This is precisely why
he needs to stfu and work like he said he would
he shouldn't be saying anything that's what he should do
whatever happened to his media silence?
anyways, vince needs to learn to just shut up and play football. if you look at past posts/news, the one thing that makes everyone on this site happy is when we hear news about vince from coaches or other players and not from vince himself. when fisher or dinger say vince has been working hard and showing improvement, that is good news. when kurharsky(?) blogs about vince having a good practice, that is good news. at this point, vince needs to speak through his actions, especially since he isn’t particularly good with words.
i agree this isn’t really newsworthy, but it isn’t really something he should be addressing publicly.
p.s.
there are plenty of people on this site rooting for vince to succeed. quotes like this just make it harder to root for him.
you're pretty much right that it's a lose-lose situation these days
but he’s only got himself to blame. This fan base defended him mercilessly last off-season, and VY bailed the first time things got a little rough… IN A GAME HE WAS WINNING!

You Have To Understand The Chronology Of The Last Week's Events
Vince recently returned from a self-binge of VY love in Texas. He hosted a week’s worth of parties dedicated to himself and everyone telling him how great he is and that the Titans are stupid for not playing him.
His attitude makes sense if you put it in context of the last week.
Once again, this is part of a pattern of Vince showing no committment to the Titans.

August, Jimmy
You guys said “meh” to VY’s week long celebration. Shouldn’t you say the same now?
by pigskinpundits.com on Jun 2, 2009 11:25 AM CDT reply actions
My birthday is the same week as VY's.
I spent the weekend around friends and family, all of whom told me early and often that they think I am a cool and froody guy. It was quite a bit of “self-love.” Hell, there was even a bit of love in there that I did not have to give myself. Bottom line, it was a great time had by me, and I came away feeling like I am a pretty important guy to my immediate friends and family.
That said, I somehow managed to make it to work without proclaiming in front of my boss and all of my co-workers that I need to either be publicly acknowledged as the Best in the Office, or I’m going to go somewhere else where I am appreciated more.
Why?
Because:
a) that would be career suicide, and
b) I try not to be a self-important jerk any more than is absolutely necessary.
My point is that you can spend time around people who love you and pump your ego WITHOUT letting it go to your head. And, in fact, most of us do that every day.
DannoE
"You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one."
What does his weekend in Texas have to do with price of eggs in China?
If you think I should bash someone for the way they want to spend their money on their birthday, then thats wrong.
I also believe this situation is being blown out of proportion. I believe he has every right to want to be traded where he will have a better chance of playing. But this is not the time nor the place to do it. Coming to work and talking about how I might possibly leave if I dont get the job I want based on entitlement and not merit is stupid.
Theres a big difference in attitude here. Im talking about how he could’ve answered this question: “I’m glad to be here, I’m working hard to try to be where I think I should be and be the best I can be. I want the job back, and I will try my hardest to get there” as opposed to -
“If them guys don’t want me to be in there man, it’s time for me to make a career change for myself,” Young said. “Because the fact is I’m ready to play ball and if they’re not ready for me to play ball, somebody is.”
Or essentially “If I don’t think I’m going to get to play, I’m leaving”. Im giving up and going somewhere else where it will be easier. Where I won’t have to fight for my job.
Personally, I want VY to succeed. I always have, and I think he gets a bad rap most of the time for petty shit. But its hard to back someone up when they live by this philosophy.

so if I'm hearing you correctly...
any time the media asks him a question his response should always be “No Comment” or the most boring BS answer ever “I just want to do what’s best for the team” no matter what he is asked. Why is that better when you know it isn’t what he honestly thinks? You’re ripping him for saying he wants to play. That seems silly.
At this point in his career,
that is exactly what his defense should be. He’s the back-up QB, and not even on solid footing there. He’s almost at the Joey Harrington stage of his career, so really, this isn’t the time for him to start mouthing off.
DannoE
"You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one."
I don't care if it isn't honest...
I know Jeff Fisher doesn’t mean a lot of things he says in press conferences. I still don’t want him to come out and say “Well, Mike Reinfeldt did a crappy job drafting me players I can use this year,” or “Vince Young just sucks right now. He can’t even get the damn ball in the direction of a teammate.” I WANT him to support the players and the organization and be tight-lipped about it.
Same with VY. I don’t care if deep down he is pissed about not playing, I want him to give BS answers and to talk coach speak and say all the right things and put his head down and work. And don’t use Peyton Manning or other ultra-successful people as an example. If Vince Young achieves half the success of Manning, then I won’t have a problem with him speaking his mind. But until then, yes i do expect him to shut up, give vague, BS typical answers to the press and just work his ass off to get his starting job back. He can’t seem to grasp it’s in his hands, not the coaches. He’s infinitely more talented and much higher payed and much more marketable and much younger than Kerry Collins. There isn’t anything more in the world I would want to see than him to win the job back due to his outstanding play. But he can’t because he’s an immature idiot, and QB is about maturity and decision making. And until that changes, he won’t be a successful NFL QB.

if he HAS to speak to the media
he needs to say something along the lines of, “I want to play, and I need to show the improvement that will make the coaches put me in.” Or some broken English, hick/ebonics variation.
Choice of words...
It isn’t so much what he says as how he says it. He could have have said “I am tired of being second string. I am ready to start so I am going to go out and take that starting job back.” If he had we would probably all be saying that he is showing some fire and looking better every day. Instead he says “I am ready to start and they won’t let me. Boo hoo. If they won’t let me play I will find new friends to play with. Wah.”
The sentiment behind either of those is the same, he feels he is ready to start and wants off the bench. They way he said it though makes it look like he is causing drama instead of showing determination. He claimed multiple times in the offseason that he doesn’t want anything handed to him, and now he says if they don’t hand it to him he wants someone else to hand it to him. He just comes across as whiny.

There comes a time in every young man’s life when he needs to be thrown to the wolves and learn how to fend for himself. To the joy of many, and the dismay of some, that time is now.
Now I know, some of you may be asking yourself, “What the hell is this guy babbling about now?” Well, let me spell it out for you:
I got my own blog.
Thanks to baby Jesus and his creation known as Google, some poor schmuck thought it’d be a great idea to hire me as a Colts blogger for their new blog network. Can you believe it? Ha!
Seriously though, I got my own blog. It’s owned by Fanball.com, which is predominantly a fantasy sports site. They’ve been branching off into different areas, testing stuff out to see would be be interesting and make their overall network better. They launched a site called RotoTimes.com, which is set up just like Rotoworld except with more information. If you click on the RotoTimes link and look up at the top right corner of the page, you’ll see some drop down menus which are the blogs. There’s no hub for all of the blogs yet like SBNation.com has because they are still very much in the building process, but there are some active blogs, and a bunch more being launched weekly. You’ll notice there’s no Colts blog and that’s because it hasn’t been created yet. They’re still in the process of creating the site, which will have it’s own domain name, more on that later.
A little background:
Their blog manager contacted me over a week ago because he found some of my stuff on Google like I mentioned earlier. He read some of my stuff and liked it and sent me an email informing me of an opportunity he had. So naturally I responded and asked him what it was. He told me he was looking for a writer who can cover the Colts for his new blogging network that they want launched asap. I’m not privy to all the juicy details of what the blog network is going to be doing, but here’s the gist of it from the blog manager himself:
2) Fanball wants their own network, but we are working with Fox Sports. They are featuring our blogs in three of their major markets (Pittsburgh, Denver, Seattle), and if that goes well, we will expand. Fanball wants their own network with one unique site for each of the teams in the four major sports. The Fox deal has us adding MLS and NCAA DivIA teams. If the Fox deal doesn’t work out, we will still continue with the Fanball network… but for this year we have secured a great opportunity to feature those blogs and promote our entire network on the Fox network.
4) It’s your site… you’ll get your own site to run. You can write anything you want about your team; editorial, reviews, news, rumors, fantasy, speculation, opinion, interviews, WHATEVER. We want you to be you. It’s a unique opportunity to bring your personality to the network and gives our customers a connection to a fellow fan that also happens to be a writer. If you want to write about your passion, this is it.
As you can see, this opportunity would have been difficult to turn down. At first I didn’t know what to do, I was kind of in shock. I thought maybe someone was pulling a prank on me, but once he started throwing me insider information I knew it was legit. After I talked to him I immediately called BigBlueShoe and told him what was going on. To my amazement, he was more excited about it than I was. I honestly didn’t know how he’d react, but he was basically telling me I had to do it, so I did.
If you thought you finally got rid of me for good however, don’t be so sure. I’m not just up and leaving Stampede Blue. There’s a lot of unfinished business I have left here, and I plan to keep my promises and finish what I’ve started.
Some more good stuff after the jump. Please read on.
Star-divide
I plan to continue my Voice Of The Fan series and the Keeping Tabs On The Enemy. They’re both interview style segments, but every now and then I’ll throw in some original material to spice things up a bit. Much of my time will be spent pumping out as much great material for my site as possible however.
Let me make one thing clear: I am not in competition with Stampede Blue. That was never my intention when taking this job. BBS and I have already discussed how we are going to credit each other’s blog as much as possible. Stampede Blue is by far the best Colts blog on the internet. Do I want my site to be bigger? Well yeah, why wouldn’t I? But realistically, I can only hope it would ever be half as good and popular as Stampede Blue.
Having said that, I want to throw out some thanks to a few people:
BigBlueShoe:
I’ve already told BBS this, but I want to say it publicly; I owe everything that has happened to me up until now to you. If it wasn’t for you and this amazing blog, I wouldn’t be where I am now and about to launch my own blog. I distinctly remember you mentioning in your email to Colts Homer and I after we were selected as writing fellows, that it’s possible that this stint as a volunteer writer could lead to bigger things. I figured it was possible, but had about 0.000000001% chance of ever happening. Apparently, 0.000000001% of the time happens all the time, who knew?
Thanks again BBS for taking a chance on me, and thanks to all those who voted for me, even if you regretted it.
MasterRWayne and yellowsnow:
You guys did a great job keeping me level headed. I leaned on you guys for advice a lot and you always came through. Thanks.
The Haters:
Thanks for the motivation to become a better writer. I’ve only been blogging for a few short months now, but in that time span I’ve learned a lot. I’ve learned of what to say, what not to say, and how to say it. Again, we all know I’m pretty polarizing, but the day I stopgetting hate posts or hate mail is the day I’ll start worrying. At least I know you guys are reading my stuff. haha
To anyone I missed, and to everyone who ever said anything nice about me (wtf is wrong with you?) thanks.
Now, I left the best for last.
The blog is set to launch in a matter of weeks. One of the decisions that was left to me was to give the blog a name, which I don’t have. Seeing as though all the readers here are well educated on the Colts, I think it’d be great if you guys had some input on the name of my blog. I’m looking for a creative, unique, catchy, and interesting name. The only stipulation is, when you read the name, you have to have somewhat of an idea that it has to do with the Colts. I’ve come up with a few ideas, but honestly, they suck. They’re boring and unoriginal, and I really need some help here.
So give me your ideas! The person with the best name will get some sort of recognition on my site when it launches.
Thanks guys!

I know it's crazy..
but after this year, could Vince go to the Arena Football League? He’d like it there. The end zones are bigger, and it would be like college where he flourished, since his receivers only need one foot in bounds to make the catch.

Outside of the lower level of competition...
I dont know if VY could handle Arena FB. It’s quick, fast-paced decision-making and there isn’t enough room for him to run and make plays because the field is so small. Of course, he’d be the best athlete in the league by far, so in that respect, I’m sure he’d do fine. Hahaha, kinda fun discussing something that would NEVER happen.

these people are delusional
A sample: “I think Vince will be just fine as an NFL quarterback. I think he was on the way to becoming one when a confluence of events sacked him last September. To explain: His first season was excellent, his second season pretty good.”
i don’t care by what standard you judge by, to say 9 TDs and 17 INTs is “pretty good”, you’re out of your mind.
“So, what are those means? A strong offensive line is a given for any dynamic offense. Tennessee is getting closer, but not superb.”
What exactly qualifies as a superb O-Line if not our O-Line from last year? I am just a notch or two above casual fan, and almost never watch line play intently. But last year, it was enjoyable to watch our O-Line work. They were awesome. Once again, if he thinks for VY to succeed the Titans need to give him a better O-Line, he’s delusional.
He then proceeds to say that we need better skill players at every position but Chris Johnson for VY to succeed, and if the Titans don’t provide that, then they’re wasting Vince Young’s talent.
Well duh. that’d be great if we got huge upgrades at every position and marched out the fastest, most talented offense with the greatest O-Line in the history of the game ever for VY to try and succeed with. Apparently Longhorn fans believe the NFL is like college and if we need faster players we need to just recruit them.
“Right now, fortunately, Vince’s trade value might be lower than expected – contract size increasing in the near future, and perceived as the back-up for Tennesee. Maybe a draft pick and one of the three Vikings QB’s: Tarvaris, Sage, or John David Booty could entice the Titans.”
Hey, morons, VY IS Tavaris Jackson except much worse!! Why in the hell would we trade VY for a worse version of VY?!?!?!?!?!
Ridiculous….

If Michael Vick (pre prison) and Donovan McNabb can be near All-Pros, so can Vince.
Nope. You see, they can throw on target.
So, they are saying that Vince would be a good fit in
•Denver
•Cleveland
•San Francisco
•St. Louis
•Miami
•Washington
•Seattle
My guess is that none of them want him though.

And Michael Vick...
Was pretty overrated as well. He killed coaches, didn’t practice hard, relied on his althletic ability (which is far more impressive than Vince Youngs), and eventually it caught up to him. His last year they were 7-9.

Not anymore delusional than calling Collins a "great" QB, as many Titans fans do :)
“Apparently Longhorn fans believe the NFL is like college and if we need faster players we need to just recruit them.”
I’m a Longhorn fan and I don’t believe that. A little big on your big brushes there. The point here was that in VY’s short tenure, the team did not make a whole lot of open efforts to get him a lot of weapons, weapons they are now getting for Kerry Collins. Don’t pretend that Titans fans did not make the same criticisms of the front office in the past.
“Hey, morons, VY IS Tavaris Jackson except much worse!! Why in the hell would we trade VY for a worse version of VY?!?!?!?!?!”
Not all think he’s a worse version; many still have high hopes Tarvaris can succeed. Apparently that’s not you, but many would disagree that Jackson is just some version of VY. Furthermore, Tennessee won’t trade Vince not because of that but because of his contract and the cap hit they’ll take.
I did not agree with everything whills wrote, but his point about Tennessee curiously drafting a QB to basically be a caretaker is spot on, and one made by many a Titans fan the past few seasons. If you’re going to draft a QB #3 that’s anything like Vince, you’re going to have to take the gambles to build a system around him (if you’re not willing to, don’t draft him). Tennessee didn’t do that, which is as much their fault as Vince’s. Many Titans fans still blame Chow for that.
“i don’t care by what standard you judge by, to say 9 TDs and 17 INTs is "pretty good", you’re out of your mind.”
Apparently, 12 TD, 7 Int, and 58% completion percentage is a season worthy of being a Pro Bowl alternate. Shrug. Crazy world, huh?
Even for a Longhorn fan, I was amused how silly some Titans fans’ defense was of VY the past few years, as well as some of their predictions. I read a few (forgot if it was here) that predicted VY to have something like a 30 TD season. Thus, if you’re going to try to generalize Longhorn fans as a bunch of delusion morons… well, looks like we have good company, no?

Who has high hopes for Tavaris? Alabama State Fans?
Apparently, 12 TD, 7 Int, and 58% completion percentage is a season worthy of being a Pro Bowl alternate. Shrug. Crazy world, huh?
Well if you think that doesn’t deserve pro bowl honors (and I agree), then you and the rest of the Vince Young lovers Universe need to quit using his Rookie Year as an example of how amazing he is, and point out how he was so good because he made the Probowl as a rookie because his stats then were 12 TDs, 13 INTs.
Ah, but VY fans don’t want to do that because he won 6 games in a row!!!! HE WAS AMAZING!!! HOW CAN HE DOUBT HIM!!!!
Kerry Collins won 9 in a row as the starter.
So in every way, Kerry Collins season last year was better than VY’s best season. I don’t think he was amazing, but I think he was better than Vince Young by a long shot.

When did I do that?
Again, you seem to be fishing just to insult people who disagree with you and generalize a fanbase.
Furthermore, I would disagree what Collins did was more impressive than VY. Consider, that first of all, Vince Young was a rookie that virtually everyone, including in Austin, thought should ride the bench for the year, or at least most of it. Secondly, here are Tennessee’s records before VY: 4-12 and 5-11. He inherited a team that most predicted would win around four games in 2006. That team’s defense was ranked near the bottom in most categories, his receivers were not very good, and he while he had a decent crew of RB’s, it’s not like he had LT that year. Collins inherited a team that went 8-8 and 10-6 the past few seasons, had a defense ranked high in all categories, got a coordinator that is more proven in the NFL than Chow, and he got a major upgrade in his offensive weaponry in Chris Johnson. The amusing part is that as unimpressive as Collins’ numbers were, his rating was among the best of his career.
So, you really want to go the route that Collins’ year was better than 2006 Vince “by a longshot.” Ask many fans here, many of whom, including Jimmy, would take 2006 Vince over the present Collins in a heartbeat. They just think that player is long gone.
by TheElusiveShadow on Jun 3, 2009 9:59 AM CDT up reply actions
I think
he’s the same player as he was in 2006, just the rest of the league has adjusted. I don’t speak for Jimmy or other Titans fans, but I am sure plenty know that him in 2006 wouldn’t be the answer, because I don’t think he has gotten worse. I just think he hasn’t gotten better, and THAT’S the problem. He doesn’t have the attitude or the work ethic to get better or to study film and learn to understand NFL Defenses and things like looking off the safety.
And I’m not generalizing a fanbase, I am generalizing the people in that specific article (writer and commenters), and they DID talk about his Rookie season as if it was out of this world.
I will give you this, you got me to thinking. Vince was a perfect fit for the 2nd half of 2006. With KFC in, we probably finish 6-10 or worse. VY’s playmaking led us to 8-8 and overachieving. But I think possibly his Rookie Season and how well he played at times could have been the worst thing for his career, because since then he seems to have adopted the attitude of “I’m a star in this league, nobody can stop me,” and he hasn’t gotten any better since. And both us and him need to grasp reality on how good his rookie season actually was. 12 TD’s and 13 INTs is not AMAZING. And we went 8-8. And when we needed a win to get to the playoffs, he didn’t come through. It was a decent season, not unbelievable.
Texas fans who have followed VY into the pros, like those commenting on that page for the most part, are delusional. It’s the NFL. You can rarely put together an Offense with 2-3 good RB’s, an amazing Offensive Line, and top flight Receivers. We have 2 of those 3, but we can’t find the receivers. Even the Patriots great Offense of 2007-08 didn’t have great RB’s, they just covered it up with scheme and Tom Brady. Yet, they are saying the reason VY isn’t working in the NFL is because the Titans haven’t surrounded him with good enough talent. That’s ridiculous. To blame VY’s problems on scheme and lack of talent doesn’t hold water because lack of talent doesn’t affect good decision making and good preparation. He throws horrific passes into triple coverage and makes bad decisions regardless of the talent level around him. His best season was the year he had the least amount of talent around him.
I know it was only part of a game, but he had CJ and an amazing Offensive Line in the beginning of that Jacksonville game and he looked horrendous. He did. His interception that led to him being booed was one of the worst passes I have ever seen. It looked like he was trying to peg the Jacksonville player in the numbers.
Malcolm Gladwell points out that in pretty much all fields, including sports, that at a certain point it stops becoming about talent and starts becoming about preparation and practice. He also states that the threshold of hours of practice that separates the elite from the non-elite is 10,000. Now let me ask you, do you think Vince Young has spent 10,000 hours in his life practicing being a good QB? I don’t. I doubt he is even close. Peyton Manning on the other hand, I’d believe he’s spent 10,000 hours in his life practicing being a QB.
Vince Young is extremely talented, but so is everybody else in the NFL. He doesn’t work half as hard as Peyton Manning and Tom Brady and Drew Brees. Vince Young CERTAINLY has the talent to be a different yet still effective and elite NFL QB, but he does not have the work ethic and it doesn’t look like he’ll be getting it any time soon.

I actually agree with most of this
I am actually few among Horns fans who wonder that it was actually bad for him to see that much success so early.
I will disagree about his particular game against Jacksonville though. It was an ugly, defense game, as most games are between the Jags and Titans, and Garrard was no better. He threw a bad pick, but I thought the playcall was bad and I thought the DE made an excellent play.
The reason his rookie season was impressive was not because of his numbers, but how he helped the team win games. After all, most rookie QB’s have roughly a 1-1 TD-INT ratio or worse. He performed in the clutch, made big plays, and generally gave the team some fire that was dead. I actually don’t think that if VY becomes a successful QB, he will EVER have grand high numbers like the Mannings and Bradys. But he’ll be able to convert third downs as a dual threat and perform when it counts to win. But I digress…
I will tell you as a Horns fan that 2006 Vince was very different. Vince Young was actually a very hard worker at Texas, which contributed to his surprising improvement in his passing game for his junior season (went from sub 60% completion percentage, less than 2000 yards, and a 1-1 TD-INT ratio to 65%, 3000 yards, and a 26-10 TD-INT ratio to be among the nation’s leaders in passing efficiency). We saw the same fire and heart in his first year in Tennessee. Then something changed, and I actually talked about it to some of my fellow Longhorn fans as early as 2007. He didn’t look like he had the same “it” factor and the same love of the game. Why? I don’t know. I can only speculate about his father trying to get back into his life, the money and the pressure, etc, but I will tell you that 2007 and 2008 Vince was very different from the 2005 and 2006 Vince that I saw. I, and anyone who has watched Vince for a long time, will tell you that it’s actually not his elite athleticism that was his greatest gift, but his will and drive to win and be better, which was something very contagious for his teammates. For some reason, that seemed to leave him. Hopefully, it will come back to him. Thus, I agree with you that talent alone will not save Vince; I disagree that that’s what he relied on in the first place.
I have no idea if Vince has reached 10,000 hours of practice. But the Vince that loved the game of football and had a blast playing it, he worked his butt off. The Vince now? I honestly don’t know. But I’m not kidding one bit when I say that the Vince I have seen the past two years is very different than the one that came out of UT.
That being said, the expectations placed on VY were utterly silly, so of course fans were disappointed. That does not excuse trying to jump on every word he says to tear him to shreds.

Shutdown Corner’s view on the VY saga is one that I agree with
But he should probably wait until he accomplishes something before he starts making threats about wanting out of town. And if he did get his wish to play for elsewhere, good luck to him in trying to find a team that’s been as patient with him as the Titans have.
