Titans 80 man roster predictions?

Ok, I stole this from Sklz711 over at Windy City Gridiron (link), the Bears blog site.  Since things are slow all around the NFL right now and I don't feel like going to bed yet,  I decided to rip his format and go over the roster spots for the Titans before they have to reach the 80 man roster limit.

Below are the players currently on roster (according to wikipedia, players in italics are rookies) for each postion, and further down is a little breakdown given by me of who I feel gets cut, gets on the practice squad, etc.. I don't have much information about every player at every postion, I'm just giving you what I know. Feel free to add your thoughts and comments of who we'll be planning to see on the Roster for the Titans at the start of the 2009 season.

Star-divide

Quarterbacks

Running Backs

Wide Receivers

Tight Ends

Offensive Linemen

Defensive Linemen

Linebackers

Defensive Backs

Special Teams

Quarterbacks: There are currently 4 QBs listed on the roster. Collins and Young are definately 1 and 2. In all likelyhood Ramsey is 3rd string if the Titans decide to go into the season with 3 QBs on the depth chart, otherwise he'll be cut before season. That'll leaves Mort's kid on the practice squad until he gets picked up later.

Running Backs: 6 RBs and 4 FBs. I don't think the Titans start the season with more than 4 active RBs. Smash and Dash are 1 and 2.  Spots 3 and 4 are up for grabs.  I expect 5th round draft pick Javon Ringer to grab the 3rd spot, leaving Chris Henry, Quinton Ganther, and Rafael Little.   I'm going out on a limb and will say that Chris Henry grabs the 4th spot and Ganther and Little are cut or on the practice squad even though they've shown promise.

Wide Receivers: Definitely the most exciting position for the Titans this year as I'm sure we are all eager to see what this upgraded receiving corp can do. I say 6 WRs  for the season with Gage, Britt, Washington, and Hawkins taking up 4 spots. Mark Jones is listed as a WR even though I believe he was brought in primarily as a return specialist, making 5.  I don't understand why Paul Williams is still on the roster and think he gets cut this summer. Unless the Titans desparately need another body to take up space somewhere on the field, Chris Davis is cut.  Don't know much about the late round/free agent rookie receviers in Edison, Guice, and Morris, but I think one of these guys makes the active roster for the year as a special teamer.

Tight Ends:  It may be a little odd, but I think the Titans carry 4 TEs for the year. Theres only 5 on that list and I think the coaches will make Craig Stevens useful. 3rd round pick Jared Cook is a freak, and I expect him to take the field. Mulligan is the only one left out and will probably be on the practice squad again.

Offensive Line:Stewart, Amano, Mawae, Scott, Roos are locked.  Harris played well in place of Mawae in that playoff game so he stays around this year.  Hate to say it, but I can't say much else about these big uglies.

Defensive Line: With Al gone, we can expect to see a heavy rotation.  Don't know what to elaborate on as the DL has been discussed a lot with Al's departure and the signing of Haye, drafting of Marks and what not. Maybe we'll see Ulrich Winkler?

Linebackers: Not much to say here.  Maybe its possible Ryan Fowler gets cut? I doubt it, as I'm sure hes a reliable backup in case of injury or for special teams play.

Defensive Backs: Theres a lot of bodies in this group, and aside from the obvious spots for Cort and Harper, I think Fuller maintains his Nickel postion.  Mouton gets a spot from being a pretty high draft pick and I heard through here that Cary Williams was taking snaps with the 1st team? The other dudes I don't know much about and I'm starting to get sleepy.

Special Teams: The same as last year.  Except for undrafted free agent A.J. Trapasso.  Probably on the practice squad or cut. SIDENOTE: According to NFL.com, Trapasso is listed as 5-11, 225 lbs.  I don't why thats interesting to me, except that those are pretty much my physical stats.

What are your thoughts?

Points of Contention...

Just a couple.

I think we’ll probably carry two QBs, but I could be wrong. We carried three last year. The Titans are prolly done with Vince (see VY’s Baltimore radio comments), so Ramsey could make it.

Chris Henry is GONE with a capital GONE. I think they would carry Ganther before him, but I suspect that Little will get a shot.

Chris Davis has supposedly looked good in camp so far. If he keeps that up (it’s possible) then he’ll make the team and a rookie WR or two will go to the practice squad.

I'd keep Ramsey on the Practice Squad...

there are so many other players that can get on the field and help, like

DL: We have got to have one of the deepest D-Lines around with alot of potential…I’d rather keep another one of them and only dress Kerry Collins / Vince Young on game day.

RB: I like the idea of having Ringer / Little if they do well in camp…that leaves Chris Henry odd man out

WR: I agree with first four…I am interested in Edison and “deadly juice”

TE: I see keeping four…If Cook can produce him and Scaife on the field at the same time could be awesome.

LB: Fowler is a quality guy who can come in and be productive…If Mcrath comes in and can play..then we have alot of flexibility at that position. Tully can always slide outside if needed and allow Fowler to come back in at MLB if thorton / Bulluck get injured.

gotta go back to work….I will say that it seems we have really created ALOT of competition at the back end of the roster and I am excited about how strong we will be this year!!

I wonder if Fowler is overpaid to be a backup MLB for the Titans. He’s not as good since he kicked the juice anyway.

Guice is tons better than Edison. Even Edison will admit that.

Ramsey

I remember reading somewhere that if a player has played a full season and/or been on the practice squad a number of times, they can’t be signed to the practice squad again. Ramsey has definitely played more than a season, thereby making him ineligible for the practice squad.

I’d link the rule or cite it for you, but I’m not the researcher here at MCM.

That would be me
The practice squad shall consist of the following players, provided that they have not served more than two previous seasons on a Practice Squad: (i) players who do not have an Accrued Season of NFL experience…

I predict...

that we will see a 53-man roster at the beginning of the season, not an 80

Good post

I don’t think Chris Henry will find his way onto our team though.

That's a pile of WRs

A few more than I’d realized. And there’s even a tobacco company hiding in there amongst them.

This kind of topic will heat up along with the summer; are there any stats out there on the average number of players kept by teams at a given position for the regular season? Or for a specific team how their roster composition has looked year by year? It’d be interesting to compare teams’ trends as to how they stack up players at various positions….

You mean Deadly Juice?

His draft video shows a lot of talent.

wow

First of all that’s an excellent break down of a draft prospect.

Second of all this kid looks amazing. Maybe the level of those CBs is questionable, but he still made them look like Middle School kids. I can’t wait for camp to start. We better cut Paul Williams because this Deadly Juice is the future!
