The NFL behavior policy

So yesterday after I put up my fanshot on Brandon Marshall, many people provided links to his 7 domestic abuse charges. I won't lie, I thought it was one or two. I am fairly informed on the NFL, and I had no idea it was seven. That's ridiculously despicable. It eventually got me to thinking why is he still playing and we barely even hear about it?

Now I think Michael Vick got exactly what he deserved, as did Pacman. But I do have to say, I don't think it's that large of a leap from Domestic Abuse to dog fighting. Vick's was worse, but 7 times, and some of them some very serious allegations, like the one that he took a brick to his girlfriend. A brick. That's... I don't even know a word. To go after a woman with a brick? And with Pacman...

Star-divide

... I think what Brandon Marshall has done is WAY worse, which other people have said on this site as well (I'm too lazy to find where, I just remember it being said). Pacman seems to just be an idiot, alcoholic, troubled street kid, whereas Brandon Marshall beats women. A lot. How is what Pacman has done worse?

This has been my problem with the NFL behavioral policy from the beginning. It's completely arbitrary and up to Roger Goodell. And frankly, I think it comes down to this: Whatever makes the NFL look bad and is harped on by the media, Goodell comes in and brings the hammer down. But if the media (for whatever reason) doesn't press it and it doesn't affect the image of the NFL on a large scale, it goes ignored. In many ways it's judged by your value to the NFL.

Brandon Marshall is a top 10 Receiver, at least in talent. He is a discussion in every fantasy league, and in Denver people loved him. In other words, he helped the image of the NFL, and due to the low profile his cases of domestic abuse took, he comes out as a plus in the plus/minus department of image in the NFL. Pacman, on the other hand, was a good punt returner, but his actions affected the team, got lots of press, and he quickly became the butt of many jokes on radio and on blogs. So, he's out. He's a big minus on the plus/minus NFL image scale.

To me that's total bullshit. The media could go a long way to remedy this. They did with the Michael Vick dog thing, they did with Pacman's transgressions, why are they ignoring Brandon Marshall and his propensity to beat women?

It wreaks of bullshit.

From the NFL personal conduct policy
It will be considered conduct detrimental for Covered Persons to engage in (or to aid, abet or conspire to engage in or to incite) violent and/or criminal activity. Examples of such Prohibited Conduct include, without limitation: any crime involving the use or threat of physical violence to a person or persons; … sex offenses;… money laundering;… and violent or threatening conduct. Additionally, Covered Persons shall not by their words or conduct suggest that criminal activity is acceptable or condoned within the NFL.
Any Covered Person arrested for or charged with conduct prohibited by this policy will be required to undergo a consultation and additional counseling as directed. Failure to comply with the consultation and counseling (including being arrested for or charged with additional criminal activity during the evaluation and counseling period) shall itself be conduct detrimental to the National Football League and shall be punishable by fine or suspension at the discretion of the Commissioner.

This policy is certainly aimed

much more so at punishing personnel who embarrass the league, rather than who breaks the law to a greater extent. Any you know what, I’m fine with that. The law takes care of the law and the league’s job isn’t to supplement that or augment it. I don’t want judges caring what Goodell’s punishment will be (which would invariably lessen the legal punishment), and I don’t want Goodell taking into account the judge’s sentence.

I can agree with this

But… how does not beating on women embarrass the league? Why is this not a bigger deal? Why is Pacman this pariah who damages the league so much, but someone who CONSTANTLY beats on women is not a threat? And why wouldn’t the NFL take a stand against this? To me it’s like saying “He can hit as many women as he wants, as long as he keeps it under wraps, I’m not gonna do anything about it.”

Also, the law does somewhat affect the league’s take. If Pacman had never gotten arrested for his stupidity but it had gotten reported all the same, he wouldn’t be under the scrutiny. Part of the embarrassment is being in trouble with the law.

You're completely correct.

And it’s ridiculous. I could understand a single misunderstanding that eventually gets charges dropped (i.e. last year with LenDale White), but SEVEN TIMES is a pattern that most police will tell you eventually leads to a spouse’s death. If even half of those allegations are true, then Marshall needs to do some serious jai & therapy time before he kills someone.

The NFL

Hates women. Loves dogs, drunk driving, and blunt smoking…but will slap a ho in second. What is Goodell’s motivation?

Women don't spend money on the NFL?

‘Course, I’m hard-pressed to explain how dogs spend money on the NFL, but still…

I agree with what you are saying completely

Pacman’s situation was a little different because he kept publicly getting in trouble with the police, I think he had over ten run ins with the law, then got into a very public incident at a strip club in Vegas on basketball’s allstar weekend where another man was paralized. I guess because Pacman’s situation involved someone getting shot, therefore there was a big police investigation, Godell and company decided to make him the poster child for how hard his regime was supposed to be on bad behavior. IMO Marshall should be suspended for a year just like Pacman for the system to be fair…

This was a FANTASTIC piece

Sums it up perfectly. A couple days ago Colin Cowherd said something similar about it also.

I won't lie

I think he can be quite good at times when he isn’t spending time generalizing every fanbase in the world as “boogereaters”. However, there are times where I want to reach through the radio and choke him, also. He’s very hit or miss for me.

yes

there’s something wrong with you.

but seriously, I agree with T—Rac: he’s insanely hit or miss. The most infuriating thing he does, IMHO, is make grandiose statements he backs up with anecdotal evidence or laughably small sample size… that and bash women. No wonder dude’s wife left his ass even as he was raking in ESPN bank.
