Maybe he’s trying not to get his hopes up? It’s a pretty safe way to go. If he doesn’t get resigned he looks like a smart guy who knows his business (and he’s not embarrassed), but if he gets resigned then it’s like a pleasant surprise! It’s all gonna depend on how much money he asks for.
