Tennessee Titans Morning Links: Oy Vey Edition

Tennessee_titans_30x21 There's more footage and info form VY's interview with Michael Smith, as apparently it'll be a big, long conversation on ESPN's magazine-style show ESPN360.  Here's what ESPN has up at the moment.  Check back with MCM today and we'll update you as more parts become available.

There's a lot of confusing and crazy things in there, but the most revealing thing for Titans fans may be that Fisher was at VY's house on Monday picking his brain, and VY seemed to make it clear that he didn't want to play for the rest of the season at that point.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 For those of a more literary bent, Vince Young recalls wanting to quit after he was booed in a GAME HE WAS WINNING!  Vince does deny that he was in any way suicidal during the confusing events that followed the game, which is good to hear.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 Terry McCormick weighs in on the early returns from VY's heart to heart as well.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 McCormick, who not to long ago gave us 5 reasons to be optimistic about the upcoming season, now throws Titans fans in the proverbial cold shower with 5 reasons to be shaking in our boots about 2009.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 See, this is why I'm livid that NBC snatched up Florio this past weekend: he's a brilliant rumor monger and news aggregator, but asking him to think and analyze that information creates headline/page hit focused drivel that would make William Randolph Hearst proud... and anything that made him proud should make anyone with even a shred perspective or intellectual integrity shiver.

Tennessee_titans_30x21 T-Rac's Posse gives us a taste of what Jim Schwartz roasting Jeff Fisher would be like.  I love this passage:

The only people that can stand to hang out with [Fisher] for more than ten minutes are Jim Beam and Evan Williams. Personally, I think he’s a bad influence on them... The man makes John Daly look like a 1920s prohibitionist.

Now that the slower period of the off-season is upon us your help in finding out of the way Titans stories is more important than ever.  If you have a link you'd like to submit for tomorrow's Morning Links email me at mcmaugustwest@gmail.com! (Be sure to include your commenting handle so I can give you glowing, semi-anonymous credit.)

So can we now officially put to rest

the debate on whether or not he quit on the team?

i'm glad he admitted it

that means he’s maturing

VY and Collins, Same Story, Different Ending?

Now it’s official. We have two quarterbacks who have tried to quit their team.

Collins has turned it around and seems to have put all his negative baggage to the curb.

Will Vince be able to do the same?

by pigskinpundits.com on Jun 15, 2009 8:49 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

But Collins had a much, much better start, even so.

He led his team to the NFC Championship game, and that was at the height of his personal struggles. VY hasn’t been able to seperate his issues from his play on the field.

Not quite.

Things became a mess the following season of Kerry’s career (1997), when he used a racial slur to describe two different teammates.

And, I think the two are very different. As he explains in the longer version, he’s been successful his entire life. Then, all at once, he’s injured for the first time in his career, and the hometown fans are booing him. It was an unusual experience for him, and his reaction was a loss of passion for the game. I think it could have been handled differently, but hearing it come from him gives a much better perspective.

These interviews have given me a different outlook on Vince’s situation. He hasn’t given up. And, he’s busting his ass to get better. I’ve seen what has happened when people have doubted this guy before.

by SuperHorn on Jun 15, 2009 9:22 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

True.

I’m probably giving KC too much credit, and his life certainly became a mess. I don’t want to defend that.

Young and Collins Statistics Not Much Different in 1st 3 Years

Young has more rushing yards. Other than that, Collins didn’t fare any better

This is shorter than what was on Sportscenter.

And my take away is much different. Try to hold off a little judgment until the whole thing is released. He came off a LOT better in the longer clip.

One thing I found interesting, he waited this long to come and talk about all of this because he didn’t want to be a distraction. The team was playing well without him, and he didn’t want to get in the way.

He also talks about how hard he has been working in the weight room and film room every week so he’s ready when his chance comes.

by SuperHorn on Jun 15, 2009 9:07 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree

that this is a huge step forward for him. He is finally starting to show that he is maturing and that leads me to believe that he could be a quality QB in this league.

I also agree

If Vince can keep a level head like he has in the interview, I think he will be the starter for the Tennessee Titans again. If Vince can get back in the lineup we’re going to be a tough matchup for defenses because of how much speed would be out there, especially if Jared Cook and Kenny Britt pan out.

Kerry will do a good job too, so I just don’t know when he will get his chance…

Sorry, I'm a Nube

2007 Rewind - Point Often Missed

Vince’s passing game suffered in 2007 due to the overwhelming drops by his receivers.

I can remember several receivers missing the catch, it bouncing off them, and going into a defender’s hands.

I think with the current offensive lineup, VY would fare better in the passing game.

ALSO, Norm Chow sucked as an offensive coordinator.

Agree.
I think with the current offensive lineup, VY would fare better in the passing game.

Until we see him with CJ, the comparisons aren’t fair, IMO.

by SuperHorn on Jun 15, 2009 10:47 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I disagree

Bad judgment as a QB is bad judgment. Kerry Collins didn’t throw 10 less Interceptions just because of CJ or slightly better O-line play. Vince had a horrible 2007 season. And as many times as his Receivers dropped well thrown passes, there were infinitely more times VY led them too far, hit them on the wrong shoulder, threw it to the guy covering them, or didn’t throw it when they were open and ran for a 2 yard gain.

Tom Brady’s numbers were not great when he had bad WR’s and junky RB’s, but his INT’s were never that high. He showed good judgment as a QB even with sub-par talent around him. Vince in 2007 showed atrocious judgment in large amounts, which was usually linked to his inability to read defenses.

I still think in many ways his success as a rookie ruined his 2007 season because he thought he was better than he was and he could just play as is and not worry about studying up too much. Hopefully, if what he’s saying and the things we’ve heard from Fisher are true, he’s actually studying defenses. That is the key with him. Learning to read defenses.

August

You couldn’t be more right in regards to Mike Florio. It even stated in the press release that Jimmy provided that him and his team of writers MOSTLY rewrite what stories are already out there’ The exact quote I found is:

Florio and his small group of freelance writers collect and rewrite stories from newspapers and websites bq

I mean, C’mon. And that VY is the new Brett Favre crap? Give me a break! Steve McNair did it a couple times. Can he really not figure out how it’s different? How it’s not EVEN RELATED??

And if you read the comments, their readers are even worse. I mean, wow.

Fuck that guy. I hate PFT.

it’s the website. PFT has a lot of readers/followers.

That Florio is probably going to make a fortune off of what he does

is simply stunning to me. I’m dying to see what NBC does when he horribly mis-reports something that pisses off a player or organization.

Also, there’s pretty much no chance he runs any dirt on anyone involved with the Football Night In America posse, is there?

I could be wrong here...

But I feel like the people that like PFT also listen to Jim Rome. Same haughty bullshit attitude, same complete misreported retarded take on situations, same mindless audience that thinks these guys “push the limits” and say “what they think and don’t take shit from nobody”.

It’s gross. So is NBC’s Sunday Night Football in America, so I guess it will work. I am imagining Mike Florio on set with Peter King while Tiki Barber grins like an idiot in the background and Bob Costas has that smarmy look while he serves as the shows Maitre D’. Then they shoot it over to Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann who continue to live off mid-90’s glory and use the same schtick that’s 15 years old. At this point I black out and usually don’t recover from the trauma until about halftime.

See I don't mind FNIA as a whole,

but there’s just too many people on there. I like Bob Costas as long as he doesn’t slip into that ‘things were so much better in the good old days’ crap like he does with baseball. I’m hoping for improvement from DP and Olbie this year since it had been about 15 years since they did a highlight package together.

Music City Miracles blogger and official Jon Bovi tour manager.

by August West on Jun 15, 2009 1:03 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I can't stand FNIA

because I don’t like any of the analysts on there. Dan Patrick is okay, but he’s not really a football guy. Same with Keith Olbermann. Olbermann is one of these baseball obsessed guys, why they thought to put him on an all football show I’ll never know.

Peter King, no duh. Costas I don’t mind, but he isn’t an analyst. As I said, he’s more like a Maitre D’. “Thank you for joining us here on FNIA, here’s Tiki Barber and Co.”

Tiki annoys me because he refuses to take his lumps for the Giants thing. And since he is articulate he gets a huge pass. The guy was a cancer and trouble-maker in the lockerroom because Tom Coughlin expected him to work hard. He bashed Coughlin (who is one of my favorite non-Jeff Fisher coaches in the league) ALL THROUGH the 2007 season. He seems to forget it was Coughlin who cured him of his fumbling problems.

But after the Giants won and Coughlin proved that once all the headaches and BS was removed he could coach football pretty damn well, Tiki never gave straight answers for his criticism of Coughlin.

Bettis wasn’t great, but he wasn’t bad, but that doesn’t matter because he isn’t on that show anymore. Matt Millen, well I despised him being on there that one time. To me that feels like a giant F*** You to NFL fans and Detroit fans in particular. That’s saying “The dumbest General Manager in the HISTORY OF THE NFL is smarter than the smartest football fan that watches our show.” Then he lied on the show saying he would’ve fired himself. Bullshit. Then resign, asswipe.

All of this combined with Olbermann’s worst man in the NFL or whatever, the take from Bill O’Reilly’s thing, annoyed me. I have no love for Bill O’Reilly, but take your political feud to MSNBC, cockbag. I want football.

Anyways, you get the point. Overall, I thought it was one of the most overblown, over-produced, over-hosted shows ever. Personally I like 3 guys. 1 guy to run point, an analyst who watches film such as a Chris Collinsworth or Ron Jaworski type guy, then a guy who has strong polarizing opinions. Then you can call up the Mortensens and Claytons and such to give some breaking stories. There. Done. I don’t need 13 guys arguing and re-hashing and creating contrived segment ideas to get highlights and opinions on a days worth of football.

“He wants to play and I understand that. I want to play and be the starter. I feel like if the Titans didn’t want me, there are plenty of other teams that will. That’s just the competitive nature of yourself.”
